NSW Storms 7-8 August 2011
« on: 08 August 2011, 10:55:53 PM »
Well yesterday was certainly a nice change from clear blue skies! I believe It has felt like spring the past week or so and even more so now we have had some thunder and lightning and even pea sized hail!

Nice images of the lightning and storm structure - may we declare the storm season open 2011 to 2012.

I too a few images - one storm I found quite nicely structured in terms of updraft and anvils for this time of the year.

Hi guys,

Great shots there Kane and Jimmy, particularly that great cell structure! Very nice to see this early -no surprise given the higher than average temps we're having lately.

Had a large storm cell pass by us on the night of the 6th at 11:30pm EST. It passed about 40k's S-SE of us here and went over the Grawin Opal Fields dropping 13mm of rain on it's way through. Lightning was frequent and very bright due to a crystal clear atmosphere all around the cell. It was too distant and fast moving for me to warrant heading out for a shots. Nice to watch it from my back yard though.  :)

Didn't catch much of the storm front moving out to our East towards Moree yesterday evening (7th Aug.) as once again it was just a little too distant for me.

Kindest regards,
Shauno.

EDIT: Direction typo.

Awesome stuff Kane!!!......saw that cell near Coffs yesterday and was hoping you were on it, so refreshing to see CGs again!! Love that structure Jimmy...I am correct in saying that's a back sheared anvil? We had some storms around our area(Lismore) last evening but only appeared weak when they were moving in from the west, still managed to drop 2.6mm in short time though which is our first rain in about a month. Gave myself a kick up the backside later on when I checked the radar and saw lightning had picked up in intensity as it cleared the coast....guess it tapped into the slightly more unstable environment there. Ah well was good to see something after what seems like an eternity of boring weather in these parts......bring on Spring I say!!
South Lismore, Northern Rivers NSW.....Supercells are us!!

I'm surprised to see CG's with these coldies. Do you see CG's often with coldies over east? And great structure for winter cells. I assume there was a lot of surface heating with those thunderstorms, as I didn't think the 500mb temperatures were that cold up there.

Been some great storms from this system!

Pete, coldies near the coast (and particularly offshore) often get quite lightning active as they generally become stronger once they tap into the better moisture and relatively warm east coast current. The 500 temps have been -26 to -28 in the thunderstorm areas which is rather cold for central parts of NSW. Pity the lower levels were not cooler as there could have been widespread tablelands snow rather than the isolated falls that did occur.

My sister sent me this photo. It was taken at Horton Street, Port Macquarie about 5.30pm 8th Aug

NBN TV News showed some areas with extensive hail cover on Monday, though I missed exactly where it was ... Hunter Valley region

Michael,

The storm above also went through parts of the Hunter. I can assume that most storms on this day based on the atmospheric profile would have produced hailstones - but copious amounts would have been limited to the stronger storms.

Just used windows movie maker and set the slide show to change every 0.165 seconds instead of the dual 7. Seconds. Really easy to use

when u add/reply on this board you have to click the little globe icon which embeds a hyper link but you have to get the correct link for it to work.. so for yours to work it look exactly like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddSOOz5rSUY  but at the start remove all those spaces where it says [url      ] make sure theres no spaces. so when i remove the spaces it embeds the video...
