NSW / SEQ Thunderstorms 27 Feb - 3 Mar 2011
« on: 01 March 2011, 02:46:06 AM »
These photos were taken from Wyrallah (just south of Lismore) last night between 8.15 and 9.30pm EDT. The lightning was fairly active though not a lot of CGs to be seen. The roll cloud marking the outflow made the scene quite nice. The rain eventfully hit so I headed back home to McLeans Ridges. One CG hit in the valley just in front of my house and would have been the shot of the night - had I captured it lol

Nice to see some shots from your area Michael! not much happening this year hey??

I was lucky enough to get out and chase a bit yesterday. This first storm is sitting over the bellingen area in these shots. I heard reports of some small hail down there.

To keep ahead of the storm I went north to Bucca. The storm was really strugleing by then however a new area of convection was developing to its west so I headed off to Nana Glen.

Later on some new storms developed out to the west off Coffs. I only managed a few shots before the rain got to heavy.

Awesome storm North West of Sydney this afternoon. Check out the two scans from roughly the same time. You can clearly see a mesocyclone signature in the doppler scan as well as outflow boundary's on the north west flank of the cell and inflow boundary on the north east flank. I think the reflectivity scan speaks for itself with its typical supercell signature.

Wish I was there!

Hi Jeff,

I went after that cell and tried to intercept it near the Central Coast. I did not know at the time that this was a right mover which tend to collapse relatively quickly in this country. I never got a good view of the storm. I did have an overshoot shot but with powerline in front I deleted it.

The storm was never going to really make it to the coast which was cloudier and 'cooler' but it was too late then.

These are the picturesThese are the pictures from yesterday:

Hi guys,

Some wonderful photos there! Shame the cell was missed Jeff. Looks great on the radar returns!

We had several storms come through yesterday (1st March) evening. The biggest storms seemed to be sitting down around Walgett. They were showing some intense Mammatus on their anvils which I could see clearly even though we're 70k's away.

Our first storms around 8pm were very HP but moving rapidly NE. Lightning was intense but we missed the best shots while we were in transit getting to a good area to shoot from. Fairly typical lol. The largest main cell came in behind the first one or two from the West and hit town around 9:30pm. I'll get some rain totals for those.

We saw some amazing crawlers but CG were very limited.

Nice to see some action as it's been a poor season to say the least.

I wonder if anyone took shots of the severe storm that hit Broken Hill on the 1st around 7pm?

Cheers,
Shauno.

I went out chasing again on the 28'th of Feb (first photo) and the 1'st of March.

The first of March storm was awesome! Big nasty gustfront followed by strong wind and heavy rain. Coffs recorded 2 gust of 98kmh. I was at Mylestom again at the time and the gusts were savage! After photographing the guster I tried to make my way back to Sawtell, the roads were covered in branches and even a couple of trees were laying across the road. I took a different way out of Mylestom via repton to get around a large tree over the highway.

I made it back to sawtell and shot some lightning from the back end..

Wow!!! Spectacular shots Kane, refreshing to see some decent structure!

Here's a few pics from a chase with Michael Bath to Casino and eventually Grafton on March 1st 2011

Lots of CC lightning made shooting difficult but the bolts were nice to see, even though they were somewhat distant. Was nice to get out on a chase again even if the storms didn't co-operate fully. Thanks to MB for driving and shouting me tea.....chase fail for me forgetting my wallet!!

Cheers Jason

Very nice structure on the storm you observed Kane. I recall mentioning to Jason that the radar looked pretty mean down your way.

Had a nice afternoon and evening out chasing with Jason. There was a LOT of lightning over a very long line of activity. Just a pity the best was just a touch too distant. We got blasted by the outflow gusts at Grafton too - probably 70-80ks where we were.

Spectacular images by all...beautiful!  I've been watching with interest these particular days when those severe storms show up on radar!  As soon as I saw that radar signature on the radar commented on I thought...somebody has to be after that surely!  Great information as always and stunning photos.

Got 37mm here just now (7pm 3 Mar) with a rain rain up to 178mm/hour. A gust front passed over which was nice too !

Quite a few CGs around but all eased off now.

There has been some spectacular lightning observed and photographed by Kane and others in this thread. Very nice viewing and keep up the good work.
