Thanks Kane - looked like you'd be in for another good show and it sure was.  Some developed offshore further up this way but too far offshore and at a much later time.

regards, Michael

Yeah good stuff Kane (again), you sure have had a good run of offshore storms this winter. How about sharing some up this way, I know of a few NRs storm chasers that could do with some nice lightning :) Anyway mate keep them coming they certainly are a sight for sore eyes. Well done!!

Hi all,
Top job with those shots enak_12! I'd almost forgotten what an updraft or an overshooting top looked like lol.

The third shot from the bottom looks very similar in layout to a shot I took years ago, called Orion Twin. Your storms are definitely more powerful than the small multicell setup we encountered that night (almost 5yrs ago).

We've had a few sporadic light showers about this afternoon following a very gusty morning. A few nice looking cumulus around with the odd shower falling from them and a little virga here and there.

Take it easy guys,
Shauno

Hail near Narrabri 5th August 2008

We had a cell ~20km west of Narrabri about 15:30 this afternoon which dropped some hail and very little rain. Most of the stones were 10-15mm but some were up to about 25mm.

There was also some stuff like a slushy you get from a cafe, that went splat when it hit you. Whereas the hail ice was white and frozen solid.

The lightning detector at work peaked at ~10 strikes/minute from memory.

The storms looked nice with fibrous glaciated anvils and some patches of mammatus. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera.

Regards,
  Dave

Went out for some more shots tonight (5'th). The storms were weaker and a bit further away. I hope everyone else gets some storms soon! Feel a bit guilty being the only one posting photos. I'm looking forward to Spring this year if its anything to go by this winter here in Coffs!

Thanks for that report David - 25mm hail is quite significant - certainly into the severe category.  I was watching the radar and noticed the strong cell, although no warnings were issued.

and Kane gets another lightning show :)   Nothing much to report from here yesterday afternoon. Lots of virga then fast moving mid level showers that looked stormy for a while.

Michael,
I rang the NSW RFC about the hail just after it finished. Old mate on the other end sounded surprised and a bit skeptical but said he was also watching the cell. I guess the 3D RADAR imagery didn't show much reflectivity suspended higher in the cell so he decided not to issue a warning.

There was no hail in Narrabri itself but on my drive in to town at 5pm I could still see very white precipitation shafts a little further north.
Cheers,
  Dave

The scepticism is disappointing - typically if you see orange/red pixels 100ks out from the Moree radar it's significant. The storm was standing out from the pack heading ENE while everything else was heading SE.

---> Moree radar loop

btw - looks like some snow showers occurred between Armidale and Glen Innes early evening last night - temps dropped below 2 at both those locations with precipitation.

Rain event on South Coast New South Wales - 6 August 2008

Not sure whether one was aware of the significant rain event to strike the New South Wales South Coast Tuesday night / Wednesday morning 5/6 August 2008.

The New South Wales South Coast roughly south from Ulludulla to about Tathra received rainfalls up to and exceeding 100 millimetres during this period. A small east coast low developed off the coast and delivered a burst of rain within a narrow band along this stretch of the coast.

Narooma received around 75 mm, Batemans Bay received 94 mm and according to Weatherzone, it was the wettest day for two years and the wettest August day in 10 years. Braidwood scored 59 mm which according to Weatherzone was the highest one day fall in 6 years.

I noted that Moruya topped the tally on 113 mm and Moruya Heads scored 116 mm. This may be the wettest August day in 79 years for this town (Weatherzone).

The rain quickly eased Wednesday morning as the low moved away from this part of the coast.
