This afternoon looks like a chance for us westies. You could be on today Shaun :-)

18z GFS run has lifted indexs below -5 all the way from near Mudgee to well beyond the QLD border. Dropping below -7 in places. CAPE is mostly to the north. Shear seems a bit ordinary though.

Measured surface dewpoints are better than they have been of late but not fantastic, currently around 10C. BOM are calling it "isolated thunderstorms possible over a large portion of inland NSW today and tonight ahead of it but with little rainfall expected".

Probably the best setup we've had so far this season. Camera's charged, pulse rate's up, fingers crossed.

No further storms here since early evening yesterday.

The SES have had over 400 call outs for assistance in Lismore. Apparently 17 people were injured by the hail.

Weather data for Tuesday 9th October 2007

Grafton 128km radar

The Brisbane BoM did a special 04z sounding again - pretty impressive !

Brisbane 04z

I suspect the lagging SE change into the Northern Rivers yesterday helped the wind profile even more.

Clouds building up here in Armidale. Very likely to get a storm or two this afternoon.

Would you believe my car, which received hail dents from the hailstorm in Armidale on December 21st last year, only just went in to the smash repairers this week to have the dents taken out? There was a long waiting list.  ::)

Hi guys,
EDIT - Shauno - not anywhere near as much lightning yesterday compared to Monday's storms - not sure why....
MB
Thanks Michael, it does seem weird, it has the look of a storm where you'd expect CG to be firing out in front of the shelf everywhere? But I'd be happy just to have the shots you took, they still blow me away!
I hope there were no real serious injuries from the hail to those 17people, and they all recover fast! Houses and property can be rebuilt, people can't.

This afternoon looks like a chance for us westies. You could be on today Shaun :-)

Hi David, it's looking VERY good at the moment, temps at 34.6ยบ and the humidity is the highest I've felt so far at 53%. We have a cover  of mid - high level cloud (visible on the sat pics) and a light ESE at 11km p/h. The DP is a 14.4.

I have the radio on waiting for the familiar lightning static. It's a faster warning for me than the lightning tracker lol.
Cheers guys, (I have the camera, tripod and handheld UHF ready to roll at a moments notice!) :)

Mike I use the same technique as Michael and also the rapid shot sequence + a little bit of luck for day time lightning.

Clouds building up here in Armidale. Very likely to get a storm or two this afternoon.

I just looked out myself, very excitedly. The do seem to be building up. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Here in Armidale we didn't quite have anything like what was experienced on the coast. We've had a few cells pass. One passed at 4am on Monday morning, leaving 2mm of rain at our place in the North, but mostly light and noise. Others passed a little bit earlier, but I wasn't awake :( . We also had some action on Monday night. One cell left a recording of 80km/h gusts at Armidale airport. The rain was blown half-way up our front door, which is behind a roofed-porch.
There was a small storm sitting off in the distance later on that evening, just after dark. It had frequent lightning (but no thunder). I could see there was a cloud there, with the last light of the setting sun, but it just looked like a blob. When there was a flash of lightning, however, the definition in the cloud was shown up. It had a nice shape

I suppose our real excitement, though, was the hailstorm last year in December.

I have Lot of storm reports since last week. Few are on my website but last few days thunderstorms aren't up yet.
Sadly no hail in here at Ballina since! Just had 4 wild storms yesterday with 23.7mm of rain. Total rainfall for Oct is 47.8mm.
Nice 85km/hr wind gusts here yesterday afternoon. My dad also have photos of hail storm yesterday, his damage to car and his
place too. No trees left over at home. It was like some mad supercell and it was on Ballina's path!

Here the few reports on here: http://www.freewebs.com/stormshunters07-08/

More reports will come up during the weekend when i am on the break and even no storms so i can have time doing it.
Note that there nice cgs photograph i ever taken before! That was on Monday 7th.

Looking forward to today's and tomorrow's severe storms, hopefully hail here at Ballina this time!

Cheers Matt. :)

Nice photos everyone in celebration of a classic start to the severe weather season along the border region!

It continues - there is a left-moving cell some 150km west of 'Gundy' - I would say it is a nice quite isolated supercell - nice echo structure. Anyone who goes back through the archives, check Moree radar, 256km, starting around 5:50UTC  and loop in through.

Fantastic shots everybody!!! keep them coming, this has got to be the most incredible storm event since last November!! Sorry to hear your car getting damaged Michael, these things happen and are unfortunate.

Anyhow last night, a storm front came over at around 6:50pm, with very loud thunder and frequent lightning, it went through in about 20 minutes, and while we missed out on the most severe part of the storm a bit further north trees were brought down on power lines which cut power to several areas. Another line went through today at around midday with loud thunder, but thats was it.

Hello

Fantastic photos. I am impressed with the photos and the Lismore supercell looks spectacular and ominous.

Monday afternoon I was following the storm events in northern NSW. While I was watching what was happening in Casino, I was following earlier reports of a separate thunderstorm cell that went through Glenn Innes earlier that afternoon. Did anyone capture anything of that storm? Apparently there were reports of a strong thunderstorm in that town that dropped hail up to 5 cm in diameter in or close to town and residents were cleaning up damage.

It seems that these storms initiated on the northern Tablelands.

I was watching the BOM alerts at 4.30 pm Monday and there was a warning of 6 cm hail from a storm cell close to Casino. Another storm cell to the north had a warning for large hail in it too.

This is the first time I have seen a warning issued by the BOM for hail this size (Being 6 cm).

Great pics from people in this thread.

I have been in Singapore for the past week - MB's photos from the border ranges cell with that single explosive pulse are amazing. I really enjoyed the discussion leading up to the event. David - I also had my eye on that storm west of Gundy. Shame those storms don't seem to be there when I am. Hoping for a few more in Central NSW tomorrow.

Hi Harley and all,

The BoM issued very specific warnings on Tuesday as well - mentioning hail size again like Monday.

Ben has posted some pics of the Glen Innes storm - check the top of this page:

http://forum.weatherzone.com.au/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=000311;p=10

It was the same storm we ended up in at Coraki so it sure travelled a long way and amazing it held together on the Northern Rivers considering how many other storms developed near it.

Hi all,
I thought I'd share a photo with you from last night. We had a small cell form to the East of us here and move out towards Collerenabri at 8:15pm. It was only sparsely active and I was lucky enough to catch this shot. We also sat out on a high ridge located NE of town around 9:30pm and watched the monster storms pass through the Hebel/Mungindi region, what a show! Couldn't get shots from here as it was just too distant? Even though the storms were 50+k's away, the atmosphere was so highly charged at that point that when I lifted my small nylon umbrella to face hight and open it, bright, 1inch blue static/plasma bolts would emminate and buzz from the metal tips of the outer edge and remain there for the duration, only to weaken once I moved my hand towards them but return to full strength after I took my hand away! We've never had that happen or seen anything like it before, it was strange and amazing to see! I will definitely try to photograph it if I see it happen again!

Cheers and take care.
