New Zealand weather events
« on: 17 October 2006, 11:59:56 AM »
With the cold troughs of a weak El Nino there has been some big lightning shows along the west coast of the South Island in the past month.  Elsewhere in NZ just the odd weak storm.  Photo here from 30th September of a landspout funnel over West Auckland within a thunder shower.

No, but another storm the following day left a trail of minor damage which the fire service said was caused by a 'mini tornado' !!!  ::) ;D

Just add a photo here of the Oct 1st storm. Gust front over Auckland City.

Slightly off topic but icebergs are making to the NZ mainland this spring. They are off the coast of Dunedin.

Hi Steve,

Yes heard about that ice berg - unbelievable site. I guess global warming/climate change is all over the news?

We are have a very cool and stable summer over here. >:(

We got scattered thunderstorms over northern NZ last Saturday with marble hail.  Photos of lightning over East Auckland area.

We had a cold trough with unstable weather over the North Island last couple of days. 500mb temps around -25C.  Afternoon thunderstorms with hail upto marble size observed in some places.

This landspout funnel cloud occured over Auckland on the 31st December.

Nice shot of the funnel Steven - do you have any more photos of it, including any structure of the clouds ?

Hi Michael,  there was no real structure to the cloud build up.  This was a garden variety funnel cloud off tcu/cb.

Something we don't see much of in NZ is structured severe storms like those in New South Wales or USA.
