Tornado Alley 2003 DVD Review

This DVD captures the third episode of Jimmy Deguara and David Croan's storm chasing adventures in the United States.

Over a month of supercell and lightning highlights are presented from eleven of the chases undertaken during the trip. Unfortunately for David, he had to leave the US on the 3rd June, but that got the Great Plains really into gear with a couple of incredible chases for Jimmy and temporary chase partner Tim Marshall.

The truly breathtaking sculptured HP supercell beast in West Texas, and the atmospheric vacuum inflow dominant supercell in New Mexico are stand outs !

The final chase on the DVD sees Jimmy and Ted Best in northwest Texas. There they encounter two supercells, the first with a brief tornado and the second a magnificent LP storm.

Timelapse sequences feature in most of the chases along with the most interesting storm features and full on lightning.

The Early Years - 3 DVD set Review

This package captures the early years of storm chasing in Australia with close to 40 storm events highlighted.

The pioneering days of storm chasing date back to 1993 - well before there was any public access to the internet. Jimmy Deguara and Michael Bath set off to document severe thunderstorms in the Greater Sydney area. The team purchased a video camera in mid 1995 to capture the excitement of storm chasing.

DVD 1 of the package kicks off with the incredible supercellular hailstorm at Horsley Park in February 1996. This collection then follows events from 1997 to 2000. By late 1998, the internet provided access to detailed storm forecasting tools. Storm chasers could now venture much further afield with confidence !

DVDs 2 and 3 cover those early storm chasing adventures. Michael relocated from Sydney to the Northern Rivers in mid 1999 and began to capture the spectacular North Coast storms. Jimmy teamed up with David Croan and other Sydney chasers to continue chasing the NSW countryside and capture some of the most amazing storm structure and severe weather you'll see.

It is hard to highlight the best events with so many on this set, however the stand outs include the Coffs Harbour supercell in November 2000 with beaver tail, and the Casino HP supercell in January 2001. Hailstorms and spectacular displays of lightning feature throughout the DVDs. There is also a highlights segment at the end of the show.

The most successful DVD set at the moment is the "Supercell Journey" set of 4. This set includes the best storm chasing season in this modern era. It is called Supercell Journey for a reason: there were countless supercells intercepted during this season - some of these were violent with very large to giant hailstones - twp smashed windshields a testimony to that! There were also scupltured supercells and magnificent timelapse opportunities recorded for all to see. And then for those lightning addicts, it boasts one of the most spectacular lightning shows I have ever witnessed. Hours of lightning as an MCS lights up the Central West to southern North West Slopes and Plains. Unbelievable!

This set has been reduced in price if the full set is purchased from $80 to $69.

Jimmy Deguara
