NE NSW/SE QLD Storms 14 August 2011
« on: 15 August 2011, 08:16:30 PM »
Another storm for August, this one had some super cold outflow! I tried shooting lightning but it was hard to catch this time in the rain. Later I was to far away although I was shooting with Dan Stewart again and he got some zoomed in shots, maybe he will post them? He also got sent some pictures of hail drifts in Woolgoolga.

Thunderstorm activity spread into the Northern Rivers yesterday - despite the dew point falling to less than 5 at Casino around 1.30pm.

An interesting base developed south of Casino just before 4pm and this corresponded with a brief barrage of CGs, none of which I managed to capture.

This storm was moving NE so I moved east a little. There was a high based shelf structure but very weak. The storm seemed to weaken further after this and anvil rain started.

I was almost going to head home but noticed Jason Paterson at the Parrots Nest lookout south of Lismore. So I met up with him and set up the camera. The rain was very annoying but there were a few distant CGs captured with the lightning triggers.

Jason's dad phoned and reported a heap of hail at Hill Top near Nimbin at about 5.15pm.

The anvil rain did not let up, it was freezing and the lightning very infrequent so we called it quits.

However another cell developed to the north and gave a bit of a show from my place at McLeans Ridges.

Jason came over and we got some shots of the earlier cell that had now crept up over the Byron Bay area.

First chase of the season for me yesterday after missing out on Thursday's action. Headed out around 4pm and straight away saw some nice new bases developing on the outflow boundary pushing north from the earlier Casino storms near Bentley.

Nothing much happened until around 445pm when the line of bases now stretching north of Bentley started to thicken up and look ominous. Headed north to Jiggi and watched as the first bolts of lightning hit the ground to my north-west.

Not much happened after this with freezing cold outflow winds flying through and rain falling. Photo below is from just south of Jiggi looking north towards Stony Chute and Nimbin. Headed home happy considering it's August!

Gday All,

As mentioned by Michael Bath my Dad phoned whilst we were trying for some lightning pics yesterday afternoon. I could tell by the roar in the background through the phone that it was hailing, so I made sure he got some pics for me. He didn't get any close up pics of the size but he said it was mostly peas sized. There was still hail in drifts left over this morning, not bad for over 12hrs after the event. Anyway here's the pics:

My parents location at Mountaintop is about 10mins away from where James took his pic in the post above.

Cheers Jason
