NSW & SE QLD Storms 22 - 28 October 2010
« on: 23 October 2010, 02:14:15 AM »
Should be some slow moving storms mainly along the ranges of NSW and S QLD this afternoon. Shear is pretty slack but could be something ok amongst it.

Couple of decent cells in the greater Sydney region though no STW as yet. Jimmy will have some reports from the cell tracking NW towards Wisemans Ferry later on.

Attached radar at 4.18pm EDT

He's going to have some great shots if he followed the cell until Maitland.

Hi guys,

Boy the storms really went nuts on radar today! Still are now (6:37pm EDST) though cooling off a little by the looks.
Hoping it'll hold out until dark but the storms in my area are now just collapsing updrafts.
See how we go.

Can't wait to see the photos that Jimmy captured today!

Kindest regards.

Storm chase Dural to Maroota 22nd October 2010

Hi guys,

Unfortunately no good shots - problems with the camera lens and also too many trees!

Obviously I phoned Michael to let him know of the severe hailstones I was able to intercept today. As soon as school finished, I was already aware of a boundary interaction taking place from weakening storms on the mountains and the sea breeze.

Dural particularly just to the east was the first region to get hail to about 1cm falling steadily almost covering the road. I then ventured further north to intercept the flanking line developing along the boundary. I mostely took video but realised somehow that the lens on the camera was jammed somewhat creating issues when taking photographs.

As I arrived in Maroota, larger hail began to fall and almost pure hail. Hail was at least 2cm in diameter with the main core only hundreds of metres to the east and no roads. Hail fell for about 5 minutes before I decided to move on in order to see what structure may have existed. The storm was at this point though on a decline though surprisingly a slow decline.

Even when I arrived home, the storm was still existent! A bit of fun anyway.

I was a touch surprised today to see the storms, I got to Mascot about 2pm and got onto a roof to see some nice cloud structure around but away in the distance. I later had a message from a friend who was at Stanwell Tops mentioning a big hail dump there. Probably from the storm I will include the photo of from the Mascot roof (taken on the phone as the camera was back in the car, didn't think I would need it).

Some light rain here at Rydalmere before I got home, and I got to see a bit of lightning in the distance from the storm cell up north of me as I was driving between 3-4pm. All really quick flashes though, not strobing so even if I had been close with the camera and lightning trigger wouldn't have caught anything.

Bilpin in the Blue Mts copped some hail from the news reports, and I thought the bureau might have issued some warnings given the heavy back cores both in the cells near Dural (that Jimmy caught) and also one near Maitland about 4pm.

Anyway, the photo attached is about 2:30pm looking south from Mascot. Some nice structure for this early in the season.

Hi Jimmy - you'll have to get that lens sorted out quickly but would have been fun to get some hail! The photos with the hail streaks are nice. Looks like a few cells had the hail reaching the severe category. Channel Ten showed a clip from Bilpin which had hail to about 2cm as well. Radar indicates they copped the hail at 12.40pm.

Hi Michael,

I think the footage might have been from Matt Smith who reported hail nets to the ground - obviously the hail slides towrds the centre and the shear weight stretches it to the ground.

The hail in this storm was 'at least' 2cm most likely the main core was slightly to the east of the road. I would assume though that the largest hailstones would not have exceeded 3cm in diameter.

I have defintely more dents on the vehicle. If I have time, I will review the footage.

Storm chase Sydney 23rd October 2010

Hi there,

Another brief chase in Sydney before turning around and heading home. I don't like the concept of chasing the suburbs of Sydney given the flash flooding potential. The storms once again developed rapidly and maximised with the outflow of storms. the boundary though was too far east to get too and they were not long lived.

I was only local today (well yesterday now), left a friend's place at North Parramatta about 2 as it just started to rain. Looked towards the west and it didn't seem like anything was building quickly, but it seemed to. As I was out and about there was lots of overhead loud thunder but no strikes noticed, so I went and did the shopping. Coming out it was apparent there had been a bit of rain, and in the drive back from Baulkham Hills to home saw one ground strike a far way south. 9mm at Rydalmere while I was out. So nothing to photo, but the cloud did build quickly into storms but the cells weren't as organised as Friday. More thunder though.

Channel 9 also had a nice video of lightning hitting the Harbour Bridge or nearby on the news tonight, luckily not the pylon all our microwave gear is on or I would probably be doing a call out tomorrow.

Well today the focus is on the NE NSW SE QLD below is a quote from WZ

""Heading into this evening storms are continuing to push towards the northeast of the state, marching in advance of the trough. Tomorrow we can expect another bout of storms, but northern NSW and southern QLD will be the focus this time around.""

Below is todays Cape also i think  were in for a treat.

Antonio.

I’m a little cautious about days like today. We’ve got moisture and low wind shear to contend with (the latter being more of a concern). Things should begin to improve as the afternoon progresses. But until it does, you won't be seeing much if you're closer to the coast.

The activity out west around Warrego isn't going to reach us because the activity will have collapsed long before. Any activity further east of there may reach the coast by nightfall, but it will only be thundery rain.

Goonengerry to the west of Mullumbimby had 68mm in 2 hours to 3pm EDT though most of it would have been during one hour. Was watching it from here and cell did not move.

Certainly terrible shear today whichhas allowed some nice pulsey updrafts but not much else so far.

It has been pouring down here in Tyalgum for the last 30-40min and I'd say at least 30mm in that time.
There has been some lightning very close to my house but not too much.
But it seems the cell due to the low shear today is just sitting over top of us and not moving an inch.

Today was a very warm very nice day went down to the break wall and saw some dolphins, i also saw some convection there. i then decided to head home and grab my cam and return to the wall and stayed there for about 2 hours watching it all get sorted out, once the first cells developed i went to the lookout which gave me a better view.

more storms are coming right now so if there is lightning here tonight i will post more images

Antonio.

early convection

First cells near Casino and Byron bay

the Base of cell near Macleans ridges

Cell moves north
