Severe Weather Summary - December 1995

Thunderstorms

Queensland

On the 5th at Blackwater thunderstorms caused damage to buildings and roofs of homes.

In the Granite Belt (southwest of Brisbane) on the 16th, heavy hail caused 22.4 million dollars worth of damage to fruit and vegetable crops. Homes in Beenleigh, Beaudesert and Moreton Bay Islands lost power as a result.

In parts of the northern suburbs of Brisbane golfball size hail caused power blackouts from Caboolture to Tin Can Bay on the 18th.

A possible tornado was sighted near Gladstone during a thunderstorm on the 23rd.

New South Wales

On the 1st at Manilla trees two feet in diameter were brought down by strong winds, and 48mm of rain fell in 60 minutes.

On the 5th at Mudgee wind gusts to 113km/h occurred and 20.8mm of rain fell in 10 minutes. At Werris Creek trees and powerlines were brought down, roofs blown off homes and windows broken, and 30mm of rain fell in 15 mins causing local flash flooding. At Gloucester on the same day, 20mm of rain fell in 10 mins and hail to 2.2cm was reported.

On the 10th, 50mm of rain was recorded at Tahmoor and 28mm at Oakhurst in 15 minutes. Wind gusts to 106 km/h were recorded at Badgerys Creek, 98 km/h at Penrith and 96 km/h at Scone. At Ballina on the 11th 54.3mm of rain fell in 60 minutes.

On the 15th at Kangaloon, 4.2cm hail caused some damage.

On the 16th at Mulbring 26mm of rain fell in 20 minutes and wind gusts to 100 km/h were recorded. Trees were uprooted and 4cm hail smashed windows, killed animals and destroyed crops. Wind gusts to 120 km/h at Taree, 150 km/h at Kempsey, 93 km/h at Goonellabah and 93 km/h at Kyogle damaged roofs of homes and uprooted trees. At Lismore 5cm hail damaged cars. In south Newcastle 4.2cm hail was reported.

On the 17th, gusts to 102 km/h were recorded at Dubbo. On the 18th 120 km/h wind gusts were experienced at Lommerah and 12mm of rain fell in 6 minutes. A tornado in the Moree area brought down trees and lifted roofs off sheds. At Narrabri 4cm hail was experienced.

Tasmania

A fisherman was drowned off Maria Island on the East Coast on the 19th as a result of thunderstorms which produced winds up to 80 km/h and seas over 3 metres.

Victoria

On the 31st thunderstorms in the North Central and Northern districts caused considerable damage and two deaths. At Nathalia there was tree and house damage reported and at Benalla several buildings were damaged including the local hospital which lost its roof. Many trees were uprooted and homes were without power. Winds gusted to 167 km/h at Benalla and 95 km/h at Bendigo, and at Shepparton there were reports of damage. At Cobram two people were killed when a tree fell on a parked car in a camping ground at around 3am.

South Australia

A thunderstorm on the 5th brought localised hail to the Whyalla area.

Ex-tropical cyclone GERTIE tracked across northern South Australia during the 22nd. Heavy rainfall occurred as a result of this system.

Thunderstorms with hail the size of tennis balls were reported at Mintabie on the 30th but no serious damage was reported.

Severe thunderstorms were reported across the Central, Northern Agricultural and Murray Mallee districts on the evening of the 31st. Torrential rains caused flooding in the northern suburbs of Adelaide.

Western Australia

On the 19th a severe downburst damaged vegetation near Bulla Bulling (60km west of Kalgoorlie) and caused power blackouts to the Goldfields.

Heavy rain caused flash flooding near Mt Barker on the 21st as 74mm of rain fell in 90 minutes. Localised flash flooding occurred near Balgair on the 22nd and an afternoon thunderstorm on the 23rd produced a deluge of 58mm of rain in 1 hour over the Ongerup area. Further flash flooding was reported from the wheatbelt as storms affected parts of the district the next day. A supercell storm with hail up to 11cm in diameter caused wind and flood damage at Dalwallinu. Wind and flood damage also occurred in the Moora area as another supercell storm with hail up to 6cm in diameter moved over the area. Hail up to 4.5cm in diameter caused damage to orchards in the Donnybrook area. Kellerberrin registered 40mm of rain in 35 minutes and then another 17mm in 25 minutes.

A thunderstorm produced hail and wind damage at Kalgarin on the 25th. Local flash flooding occurred in the Kojonup area as 100mm of rain fell in 90 minutes. On the 28th hail of 2cm in diameter was reported in a thunderstorm at Meckering.

Northern Territory

On the 26th at Humpty Doo (30 km south of Darwin) thunderstorms caused some damage. On the 27th a severe storm in Darwin and surrounding areas with gusts to 93 km/h at Darwin Airport caused tree and property damage in the Berrimah and Palmerston area. Widespread lightning caused extensive power disruptions.

On the 30th a severe thunderstorm with gusts to 89 km/h was reported at Alice Springs Airport which resulted in tree and minor property damage. Pea size hail was reported in the Larapinta area.

Winds

Western Australia

On the 4th a wind gust of 119 km/h overturned two light planes and damaged crops at Kununurra.

Northern Territory

On the 27th gusts of 93 km/h were recorded at Darwin.

Rainfall

Tasmania

Heavy rainfall occurred on the 18th and 19th. A school on the east coast was closed during the morning of the 18th due to the possibility of students being trapped by impassable roads.

Flash flooding occurred in some Hobart suburbs on the 19th. Mt Wellington AWS recorded 265mm in a 30 hour period to 3pm on the 19th. Cherry growers had a good percentage of their crop ruined from splitting fruit due to the heavy rainfall.
