Just up the road at Bellenden Ker top station they have received 11 091 mm up to the end of November. This station also holds Australia's record for annual rainfall - 11 852 mm in 1999. It only reports at the end of the month though, so its not clear whether the record is going to go. With the monsoon active very early, there has to be a good chance though. This station is quite a frustrating one for those lovers of records. The official 24 hr rainfall record in Australia remains 907 mm at Crohamhurst (northwest of Brisbane), but Bellendan Ker received more than double this figure in a 48 hour period, and so would have undoubtedly broken the record if there had've been 24 hour obs. Oh well! Cheers, Jonty. ____________________________________________________________________ Jonty Hall jdh at vortex.shm.monash.edu.au CRC for Southern Hemisphere Meteorology Monash University Wellington Road, Clayton, Vic 3168 Ph +61 3 9905 9684 ____________________________________________________________________ On Sat, 9 Dec 2000 chris.nitsopoulos at jcu.edu.au wrote: > Hi everyone; > > Just wanting to inform you all about an unofficial but historically > accurate rainfall observation total of Mt Bartle Frere which is approximately > 100kms South of Cairns. Does anybody have any idea how moist or unstable the air associated with this trough is? I take it it is not very moist air or else the forecast would be even better. Although the chances of a thunderstorm this evening are not high you never know and often thunderstorms in the past have occured when BOM in Adelaide least expects it eg April this year when the Clipsal 500 car race was on, (anybody could tell a t'storm was going to develop at least as far down as Adelaide on that day, many days before it happened). Anyway can only hope we get at least a shower from this system. Have to wait and see. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. Does anyone know about possible damages and/or human losses in the area affected by Sam? I've tracked it all night long to keep my visitors updated, but I'm missing local details.

By the way, thanks a million to C. Smith and M. Bath...

Hi All.

For those who may have missed seeing TC Sam crossing the coast on the
Broome radar I have uploaded an animated loop at
http://www.ace-net.com.au/~carls/TCSamBroomeRadarLoop.htm.

I intend to leave it there for the next few days.

Hi all

Despite the forecast for Sydney being extremely enticing for the next week, with late showers/storms mentioned most days, I am unsure why the temperatures have been lowered to the extent that they have. On Friday, the forecast top temp for Tuesday was 36...it is now 26, with a southerly change expected.

Given the extreme temperatures in the west, which spread into SA today(quite widespread 40C+), and look like moving into western NSW tomorrow, I would have thought the last thing Sydney is going to be on Tuesday was 26C myself.

Option 1: Even if a S change did come through(and it would have to be extremely early in the day to keep temps down in the mid 20s), it looks like it would only be a wind change, and unless it brought in an 8/8 Sc deck from the SE, I can't see that keeping the temps down.

Option 2: Possibly the outflow from TC Sam is expected to play some part in keeping temps down, through a restriction of insolation across Sydney on Tuesday. However, my problems with this are, firstly, the jet looks like it will carry most of the moisture SEwards down across Victoria, with the upper ridge axis sitting NW/SE across NSW for the next few days. All the models I have seen prog this as the path of the moisture(both to the southeast and up to the ENE across NT and Qld), with NSW staying quite dry under the ridge. Also, there is still the mention of "afternoon showers and storms" on the Sydney forecast, which normally suggests a reasonably clear start to the day.

Option 3: Perhaps they are expecting a very strong seabreeze to keep temps down on the coast. This, to me, seems the most logical explanation, given the reasons above, but I am still not entirely convinced it will remain this low. GASP is going for 850 temps of 23C on Tuesday, so even with the seabreeze, western Sydney should get well into the mid 30s I would have thought.

Perhaps others may be able to shed light on this or suggest another option I have missed...

I can be sure of one thing, a forecast for storms 4 days in a row never comes true this far south on the coast. The seabreeze I agree is probably going to play a part, but even then if the NW is strong enough the NE often gets blow back late in the day and the temperature soars.

Either way it should be an interesting couple of days.
