The Karratha AP AWS had a min of 27C. Once the sun came up all hell broke loose with the temperature sky rocketing to 41.3C by 9am! Not much later we reached the max of 44.6C at 10:29am and just before the Seabreeze freshened up we had a temp/dew point of 44/19 !!! which is a Heat Index of 48C ! The humidity continued to rise with the seabreeze to be around 34/26 at 12:30pm and at the Airport it was an unbearable 35/27. Here are a few graphs from the weather station...from midnight to 4pm today Temperature http://www.wn.com.au/karrathaweather/images/tempgraph051200.jpg Temp/Dew pt http://www.wn.com.au/karrathaweather/images/tempdewgraph051200.jpg Temp/Dewpt/Heat index http://www.wn.com.au/karrathaweather/images/tempdewhi051200.jpg Even the native backyard wildlife which is used to the heat were trying to keep cool in the shade hehe :) http://www.kisser.net.au/kevans/uploadedpics/lizard1.jpg http://www.kisser.net.au/kevans/uploadedpics/lizard2.jpg Going for a cooler day tomorrow with the BoM forecasting a Max of 39C down 5.6C from today. I'm looking forward to later this week when hopefully the drought will end with some rain from TC Sam :) It's anyone's guess where he'll end up...could be anywhere between Broome and NW Cape... although the BoM on TV tonight are going for a landfall somewhere along 80 mile beach. Looks like windshear will be the big question mark...whether or not he becomes severe... This cell is massive and after reporting the Hail to Rob Webb at the BOM severe section here he proclaimed it as a Monster that they were very worried about !!!! At the moment the Cell is still heading N to NNE and looks to be crossing the New Engalnd Highway atm and then heading just east of Muswellbrook. Howdy all - I am in the process of getting more info on this event.

I have also been asked by Ian Shepherd, Senior Meteorologist Severe Weather at the BOM if I would like to go along and check out the damage track. Will be going this weekend.

Here is his analysis of the doppler radar for this event:

" I finally found time to look at the Doppler radar and found two clear hook
echoes moving from north to south along exactly the same route across Bynoe
Harbour during Sunday afternoon. There are also several very small tornado
vortex signatures (TVS) evident on corresponding Doppler images - clearly
the vortices that caused the spouts were much larger in size than the usual
waterspout and had a sustained lifespan of 1-2 hours, also unusual. "

Could someone please tell me Ben Quinns  and /or Jason rainforest email address? Cheers.

Rgds, Paul.

Maybe this is all an error but it seems a bit weird for this activity to pop up when BOM is forecasting fine conditions for basically the entire state and there is activity close to the coast. I suppose this rain area or thundery shower will continue out to sea but it is still interesting seeing as indications were that this middle level trough wasn't meant to cause much activity. Tomorrow maybe a bit interesting if we were lucky. We really do need some rain here in my view with almost 27 days without more than one trace of rain at Kent Town. This is worse than summer weather when we get at least a bit of rain in a month period. At least it is not too hot! _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. It is moving along the Ranges to the N or perhaps a little west of North at probably 40km/h. Radar shows a large area of 40-100mm/hour intensity rain and at times some 100mm/hour areas. I'd say there'd be some severity with this storm, which has been going for about 2 hours. Of course I'm hoping for it to come close enough to Brisbane for some distant lightning but that's probably not likely. Hopefully that'll come tomorrow and maybe a big day on Friday. First Sam, then a Low in the Gulf and now in the next few days another Low in the Gulf should develop according to the Bom in Darwin. Before we even think of that, Sam according to most models is set to recurve towards WA. I have not seen a model yet that has him continuing moving West. A new Low is expected to develop in the Gulf along the Monsoon trough, anyones guess as to its movement. Also according to the Tropical Weather Outlook issued by the BoM it seems as though the Coral Sea may be about to become fairly active in the next week or two, so hopefully Queensland will experience some interesting weather from that. Speaking of interesting weather, there was an uncomfirmed report of 500mm in a spot just South of Cairns, as well as South Johnstone with approximately 250mm. This rainfall was a result of A Convergent Easterly stream, Once again, hopefully more to come in the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately Townsville missed out due to the rainshadow effect around us. If there are any high rainfall totals from the Monsoon or the Cyclones Id love to hear about them. These storms hit Dubbo around 5..30pm.. Boy didnt we know about it. East Dubbo and most of areas on the outskirts all had no power. The phones were going mad in Call Centre, at first there was only 3 of us answering the calls. Then myself and 2 others called in reinforcments. So all up we had about 10 people answering phones.. The reports of Hail were amazing, upto 11 inches in gutters around Elong Elong near Dunedoo. Yeoval also copped it again after last Thursdays effort, 300 metres of power lines down, and 3 poles down in one street alone.. If this wasnt enough then Coonabarabran also had severe storm and hail which blacked an area of about 100km or more.. 66kv lines to substations were affected again as was last Thursday.. One person had reported his switchboard melted and hanging off the wall. Another had power lines over fuel tanks on a property. It certainly caused some damage in our area. Gulgong, Tambar Springs, Coolah and about 15 other smaller towns around Coonabarabran had gone off. Nyngan, Nevertire went off earlier from power line down. Mudgee, Pyramal only blacked out about 1 hr ago, no storms in area though. IM sorry im mentioning so many unusal names of towns here, but they are listed and supplied under Advance Energy and we cover 120,000 people. I can explain where some of these are fi you wish.. pls email me.. About 1200 calls taken tonight, I dare say other Energy Companies like AE would also had been very busy.. Lets see what happens for the rest of the week..
