Well what a day/night yesterday. After sun setting with NO action around, a great trough line / dry slot / SE steering winds all combined to form a severe line of multicellular activity. Jacob & Jason sms'ed me at about 9.15pm telling me about all this fab activity. So I thought yeah ok. I had been watching the same line on radar most of the day - as the original line formed North of Katherine. 9.30pm we set off looking at some FAB CG / CC action towards the west. About 80kms east we hit the town of Mary River, nestled at the foothills of the Oenpelli ranges. Great action there watching a severe pulse cell going ballistic. Had a scary situation - we (Jake, Jase & me) were sitting on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere watching this action when a $WD drive slowed and stopped. Thinking that they thought we had broken down I wound down the window. 1st question the guys (2 white guys) asked was "got a lighter?" Somewhat taken aback jason had a lighter. After they used it to light their gunga stick (or hash or whatever you SOUTHERNERS call it :) ) they then kept going forward and backward looking at us. We were starting to freak out a little now - as we thought they were either going to rob us or rape us! Both scary choices really..... So we gunned it away from them at about 150km/h with Jake the lookout in the back yelling out " they are still following us - hurry up - floor it!!". Eventually we left them for dust and got our thoughts back onto storm chasing. Getting back near the Adelaide River we noticed some increased activity heading towards Darwin. Core punching some side action we headed back towards darwin - via Palmerston. refillin on film we headed to a lookout in the harbour. Their we sat and were not disappointed. Winds at at 50 - 60 knots were almost blowing us off ouor feet - you could lean forward into the wind and not fall over! Being whipped by sand and other shit, and actually having salt water blown off the choppy waves caused by the winds was interesting. Eventually the guster hit us - great rain, winds and LIGHTNING - plenty of it. We watched at least 30 CG strikes around us, saw a lamp post explode right next to us (that was cool - after Jason had already looked after it! hehehe ). We then followed the main core back over NE Darwin area watching some fab CG / CC stuff lightening the sky like daytime and massive discharges smashing down around us. All in all - 260km, 6 hr chase!! Finished at 4am in the morning. Paul in Darwin (where another possible multicell line brewing to the South - now trying to find the energy to chase!) +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2000 19:12:59 +1100 From: David Carroll X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.74 [en] (Win98; U) X-Accept-Language: en To: Aussie Weather Subject: aus-wx: BOM Weather Radar Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com HI All.. Hi everyone,

Ive uploaded a couple of pics that I took just over an hour ago (~ 7:45PM) of the storm near Camden. The best pic is 261100e. The others are a bit washed out as I didnt have the video cameras auto exposure off when taking them :( In 261100a you can see the leading edge of the anvil and its beautiful fibrous appearance.

Tonight's storm was simply amazing, in terms of lightning. James and I have just been out at Warriewood on the Northern Beaches watching it move away to the NE, with CGs and CCs just going off everywhere. In relation to the funnel sighting, that is very interesting to me, as at one point, and I can't remember which image it was, the Camden storm split, the left half slowed down, started moving N(as opposed to NE), and developed what looked to James and I at the time as a hook echo, on Sydney local radar. It would be interesting to match up times. Finally, MT is actually up at Narrabri at the moment, with all the other chasers minus Jimmy's crew who are still in Queensland(?!?!?!?!). I was up with them last night and had a great time, but more to come on that in due course. Now, the 600km drive back from Coonabarabran and tonight's storm activity is taking its toll...time for bed I think.
