I had a couple of storms here. The first one was fairly tame, but the second one had a SPECTACULAR shelf cloud on it, and the overall structure was quite nice too The first storm http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/20-11-200002.jpg http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/20-11-200003.jpg I heard 2 rumbles of thunder from this and this storm fried my $300 cable modem!!!!!!!!!!!!! as they say 'it only takes one strike' ... but i mean GEEZE ... (* at &#($*& at #$(*& The second storm - fwor - for some reason i stayed in the one position while photographing this storm. I was talking to someone at my lookout and didn't even think to drive towards the storm in order to photograph the shelf cloud before dark. Some structure shots : http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/20-11-200006.jpg http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/20-11-200009.jpg http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/20-11-200013.jpg <--- digital zoom shots of the updrafts and but sweet mary jesus was the shelfy a deadset knockout. About 15 minutes after the sun set it finally clicked in my head that i should drive towards it to see the shelf cloud (DP's would have been around 23-24c at that point). 10 mins later i pulled over a small hill to see a MASSIVE shelf cloud stretching probably 20k's along the horizon - i nearly crashed into a light pole! After pissing off a lot of other cars trying to get to another lookout I took close to a dozen pictures - but it was just too dark, and only one of them came out - only just too http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/20-11-200014.jpg It's awfully dark - and that is merely 1/4 of the shelf cloud, with the best section just to the left outside the picture. To say i was dissapointed that i didn't position myslelf to photograph that before the sun set is an understatement - sigh There are 14 pictures, and i have only pasted the URL's for a few - if you are interested in seeing the rest just change the numbers on the end +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Ben Quinn" To: Subject: aus-wx: Darwin Storm Pics - Round 1 *ding ding* Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 23:20:48 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Everyone, Jason arrived in Darwin yesterday, and has begun sending back pics A great shot taken from the plane yesterday http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/20-11-200002.jpg And probably hector (?) later on in the day http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/20-11-200001.jpg And todays shots http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/21-11-200001.jpg http://bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/lem/21-11-200002.jpg I havn't had time to add these to the TD2kNT section yet, which can be accessed from the storm chasing section now - direct URL is : http://bsch.simplenet.com/lem/td2knt/ but i will add them and a few more tomorrow This page is well worth bookmarking i think - forecasting tropical storms is very much new to me, but my guess is storm activity will increase during this week and over the weekend, so we could see a lot of veeeeery nice shots +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Michael Thompson" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: Wall Cloud Rotation... Strictly speaking the rotation must be evident from the cloud base ( usually a wall cloud ) right up to the top of the storm. http://www.nemas.net/edu/soundings/soundings.htm#Glossary has another explanation as well as other tems you may hear from time to time. The mesocyclone is also defined in the northern hemisphere as : *Mesocyclone - A storm-scale region of rotation, typically around 2-6 miles in diameter and often found in the right rear flank of a supercell (or often on the eastern, or front, flank of an HP storm). The circulation of a mesocyclone covers an area much larger than the tornado that may develop within it. Properly used, mesocyclone is a radar term; it is defined as a rotation signature appearing on Doppler radar that meets specific criteria for magnitude, vertical depth, and duration. Therefore, a mesocyclone should not be considered a visually-observable phenomenon (although visual evidence of rotation, such as curved inflow bands, may imply the presence of a mesocyclone). Hi Ben,
Just thought I'd let you know that my radar of Queensland appears to of been updated. that will probably explain why I haven't been able to get anything on it. But guess what, they seem to have forgotten to put Townsville on the radar. On an afternoon like today it would of come in handy. As you can see by the lightning tracker we have plenty of activity going on up here in Townsville.Liked the "user friendly format" for the district forcast, what would the chances be of getting a radar with Townsville on it. Anyway thanks for your help,

Regards,
Evelyn
