The third in the first set of photos is very likely more than a funnel, in my opinion. This vortex is of sufficient intensity that condensation extends to what appears to be very near the surface. Hi all

Just wondering wether anybody still uses CB radios when they chase. My 10 year old drag out my old CB and said why dont we use this to contact other ASWA people on the road. I was about to tell him it was old tech. until he reminded me it might make up for mobile telephone costs compared to fuel costs .

?  Well do we still use them , and if so on what channel ?

There is the possibility of a t'storm today near the hills this could be similar to the t'storm we had here in Adelaide at the beginning of December 1999, the one that clung to the hills but still produced heavy rain in some eastern suburbs. Anyway we probably won't get anything from it but at least there is a possibility of it happening. Lots of warmth about and quite a bit of moisture to the east of the hills as well as to the north. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I'm still waiting for some Brisbane folk to get CB's in their car (hint hint :) Meanwhile, CB radios will be the primary source of communication between cars on TD2K (Thunder Downunder 2000). They're cheap, simple and easy to use - and it's worth it's weight on gold if you're chasing with another car (you amount of petrol you continually use to stop and talk to the other car(s), the mobile bills to phone the other car(s) if you happen to be lucky enough to be in mobile coverage, the general inconveinience of it all etc). They're also great for warning of impending danger (ie, animal on the road, something lying across the road, police radar :) etc. AC > dencot wrote: > > Hi all > > Just wondering wether anybody still uses CB radios when they chase. I have to say the photo reports for Victoria from Friday and Saturday 10.11/11.11.00 showing the incredible funnel/possible tornado scenes are almost unbelievable, the Deans Marsh funnel is fantastic! and I agree with L.O.M. that this could be on the ground (what a catch). I was on this day picking up our new Labrador puppy from Inverleigh about 55klm to the north, cloud base was rather low at about 900 to 1000m and even lower along the flanking lines of a number of storms in the area that day , judging by the length of this Deans Marsh vortex it appears to be almost or at least 600 to 800m in length,I also suspect an upper low and small cold pool may have been present over the west central region of Victoria, remarkably this is the second occasion in only three weeks of a tornadic episode in the Geelong region.regards Clyve H. ----- Original Message ----- From: Leslie R. The low is cut off and doesn't move very much, which is a setup for flooding. Last night's Cobar sounding (11Z) indicated that the low is associated with cool air aloft, and decent lapse rates below the mid-levels. Flow near the centre is weak, but improves as you go out into its NW/NE quadrant. The general area of interest for thunderstorms should extend from NE NSW oriented WNW into SW QLD. There might also be convection right under the low in NSW, but the lack of flow should keep that convection below severe levels. Flow E and NE of the low is a little disadvantaged as the directional shear is weak. Today's guess would therefore expect a broken line of storms from NC NSW WNW into QLD as the main feature, in the general area of a broad surface trough. A few storms have a chance of turning severe in regions of enhanced surface flow. Last nights radar did actually show a general decrease in the rain areas, with most of the heavy stuff decreasing. So much so I thought today would break into sunny periods, so I am wrong also. I would not be too harsh.

Once I sent this message I was a bit disturbed that there might be a misunderstanding. The example that I urged storm chasers not to follow was going up on ones roof during a thunderstorm. But I am advocating that the saying above, 'see it flee it' and 'hear it clear it' is to be followed. This saying was from the wit of a medical doctor who had treated the survivors of lightning strikes and had followed them for many years. As mentioned before, those who survive a direct lightning strike are often permanently handicapped and unable to work again due to damage to the central nervous system. Looks like some storms are starting to fire in western NSW. Myself, Andrew Mcdonald, Anthony Cornelius and Greg Browning will be headed for Dubbo tomorrow afternoon to meet up for the TDU chase. We *should* see some storms tomorrow, and on friday, but the weekend is still a little doubtful, see what happens when it gets closer though :) Matt Smith Matt Smith Michael Thompson wrote: > Looking at the radar at noon today I am surprised that the Sydney folk are > quiet. I have been on the road all morning and the city appears to be copping the brunt of it ,water everywhere. Not torrential stuff but given the duration of it, yes it is quite bad. Got to love our drainage system though, nearly all the flash flooding i have seen today is because of poorly maintained drains. Funny to see one drain taking water and one no more than 20 metres down the road spitting it all back up again, great stuff aeh! Very bad day for driving, lights have been on all day, including streetlights, looks like this horrible rainband is contracting south, lets see! regards JAMES P >From: "Michael Thompson" >Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com >To: >Subject: aus-wx: What's happening in Sydney ??? I think it is a disaster! From the chance of storms early in the week and more definite storms at the end of the week, the forecast has changed to fine the whole week and weekend. In fact for Saturday not only is it expected to be a scorching 33c but the upper atmosphere is expected to stabilise and give even less chance of thunderstorm activity. The longer term outlook of possible showers and thunderstorms early next week could not be meet with any confidence at all! Summer has arrived in Adelaide! You do not get storms here without earning it! ie days and days of hot humid weather before you really have any chance! I've found that most of them will get basic information like temp, DP, humidity etc, but none will give you online warnings unless you are in the US. I'm working on fixing this problem. Wetsock will get aviation ARFOR's and decode them into simple lamen's terms (for all of you that can't read the aviation abreviations) But it still won't display current warnings. I have modified WeatherX 2000 to pick up Australian Radar and lightning data (still pictures only, because all the animated ones are password protected), but the warnings once again, I'm still working on. The persistent rainy weather pattern we've been having here in SE NSW lately seems to be resulting from broad scale ascent of air flowing from the tropics, supported by moist onshore winds at the surface and a stationary inland trough. The Sydney sounding indicates surface to mid level E/NE's with upper level N/NW's. The upper winds will also be carrying the remants of thunderstorms occurring through the inland parts of NSW and QLD where there is drier air at mid to upper levels. Winds are mostly light in the vicinity of 15/20 kts most of the way up although there is a bit of an upper jetstream. - Paul G Les Lemon wrote: > When it is raining then you have significant upward vertical motion. > Without that, you will not get precipitation. > > Les +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "bussie" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: Vic is set to Explode! Also some really big storms have been going off throughout Central Australia in the past week or so with a Severe Storm hitting Rabbit Flat last night with flash flooding, golf ball hail and a possible tornado which flattened the roadhouse! Occupants of the roadhouse had to be rescued by people from the nearby mine The Granites (57kms SE). Two feet of water was flowing through the roadhouse (or what's left of it) with the road cut off north of The Granites. Check out Alice Springs broad radar if in doubt where these places are...
To am Rabbit Flat had 74mm from the overnight severe storm - I'd be interested to know if this station is just a temp/rainfall station or if it has an anemometer as well??
the wind speeds would be VERY interesting!

The best model to look at for TC development is the TLAPS 900MB winds on the Weather Co. webpage. This is the TC model that the BOM use to assess any threat. AT +48hrs it does show some evidence of a possible developing Low but way off the Coast - closer to PNG. Something to watch. The Low they may be talking about could possibly be a mid level or upper level though - which would not be picked up on the 900MB chart at first (seeing that the 900MB chart is essentially the lower levels). Keep an eye on it! BTW - here - well after thinking the hopes of any TS activity we have just had an amazing gust front or gulf line flog through here - winds estimated to be over 40knots, swirling clouds of dust and shit, and grainy hail/rain from a great rain shaft. The rain was COLD which is very unusual here. There is a coolish pool of upper air over Western Queensland and into the Northern Territory, hence the widespread thunderstorm activity. If this moves eastwards over the Coral sea then we have a fairly decent lapse rate. My day started by watching some cu forming over Mt Dandenong. This stuff was incredible, standing there watching it during my lunch break, it looked like I was watching a time lapse video. This stuff was going up so fast. When I got out of work it was spitting a little, by the time I got home it was coming down a little harder with drops that splatted to the size of 20c pieces when they hit your windshield. I checked the radar and lightning tracker while I got my cameras ready and noticed the best bet was out by Tullamarine Airport. After the last time I went out chasing (Sunbury Tornado), I though I might get lucky. I gave Jane a call to see what she thought and taking her advice I headed off towards the Western Ring Road. Once I got out near the airport, I got off the ring road and headed to Sharps Rd. The cell was just off to the west and looking quite photogenic, looked even more photogenic when an Impulse airlines jet came past on finals for landing, so I took a shot. Then I went down to the Calder Hwy and headed up to Calder Park. A word of advice for anyone chasing around this area, if you need to get to Melton Hwy, don't use Calder Park Dve unless you have a 4WD. My car now has about 13 new squeaks and rattles. Once I got past CP Dve, I headed out towards the Western Hwy and turned towards Ballarat. The cell I was following appeared to be the inflow of a larger cell that had separated. There was still a bit of activity in it and it developed a few interesting lowerings. I got a few more photo's of it from both Melton Hwy and the Western Hwy. I only went as far as the Myrniong exit as the system seemed to be falling apart. So I turned around and headed back towards Melbourne. By the time I got back to Melton, the cell had gotten it's second breath and started to build again with a visible precip curtain and some very nice back lighting from the setting sun. I took a couple of photo's from the Melton overpass on the Western Hwy and got the usual looks of bewilderment from passing motorists. Got back on the Western and saw an awesome rainbow that ended right on top of Melbourne's CBD, unfortunately, because of houses, buildings and powerlines I had to keep driving to get a decent shot, by which time the sun had gone down further and the CBD was no longer lit up in a bright orange glow. By this stage everything else that had been around had dissolved into Mid Level CRAP and I decided to call it a night. On the short trip home I saw a bit of development up to the North East and had a member of the crack Possum Suicide Squad try to pass his final exam before being accept into that very small, very elite group. Fortunately for both him and me, he failed miserably. I didn't really fancy having to clean that out of my wheel arches. Chris P.S. Robert, Jane and Macca. Fantastic reports and photo's. I am looking forward to seeing all the shots and hearing the stories from TDU2K. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Goler" To: Sent: Wednesday, November 15, 2000 3:24 PM Subject: Re: aus-wx: Vic is set to Explode! > > At the moment I'm looking to the north out of the window at a beautiful Cb > top, nice crisp anvil structure. The details differ run to run but the basic scenario is for a low (but not a TC) to form in the Coral Sea around Friday and move SW towards the Capricornia coast. As it nears the coast it turns to run SSE just off-shore over the weekend - in the process dumping a lot of rain over the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and hinterland and just clipping the NSW Northern rivers before heading out into the Tasman deepening as it goes. If it happens, the contrast between the dryness and fires of a couple of months ago to floods will be quite starke. NOGAP on the other hand isn't interested in anything other than a persistent onshore airstream onto the Qld coast with showers and persistent rain in some areas (but not the dramatic scenario of MRF). Having said that, the models tend to be pretty eratic with tropical systems, they all have their strengths and weaknesses in different situations. You will have to watch to see how they perform when we do get some TCs. I remember last summer that MRF "predicted" a number of TCs at 6 and 7 days out that disappeared into model ether as prediction time got closer. The best advice is to continually check all the models (US, Australian and EC) which are available on the web. Look for consistency across models and also consistency within a model from run to run. If a number of models are going for a similar outcome, the more confident you can be that it is likely to happen. Similarly if a model (and preferably a number of models) keep with an outcome over a number of runs, again the more confident you can be. The skill or art of forecasting is then to make your own judgement based on what is available and your local knowledge of patterns that have developed this season as well as in past seasons (and don't forget to add in a bit of chaos as well!!). The real fun is when the models differ and are all over the place from run to run. Good luck, Patrick -----Original Message----- From: chris.nitsopoulos at jcu.edu.au To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Date: Wednesday, 15 November 2000 19:05 Subject: aus-wx: Weather Channel says POSSIBLE LOW In Coral Sea >Hi All > > I am writing with regards to a comment made by Graham Creed on the Weather >Channel who suggested that an early season low will probably develop in the >Coral Sea and move West and deepen. The lightning was mainly C to C although from my vantage I didn't think I was at risk as the lightning was quite a distance from me. I did come down off the roof when i noticed some good CG bolts to the NW of me looking towards the NW part of the city on the leading edge of the storm but I slipped and nearly broke my back when the ladder gave way. My bum has a good bruse now. Yes it can be dangerous coming down from roofs in a thunderstorm espeially when the ladder gives way !!! It dosen't thunder very often in Christchurch, this storm being a bit better thasn the last one we had which was also on a Tuesday (17 th Oct) That brought lots of hail to NW suburbs of Christchurch. That storm was the drought breaker as the last storm previous to that which brought lightning and thunder to Christchurch was 13 months and 25 days previous to that. No damage was reported with any of the lightniing strikes, which were coloured pink. What makes a lightning flash look pink ??? There were quite a few pink or purply pink flashes. There may be other storms later on this week here on the East Coast of the South Island as long as that lovely anticyclone hangs in there in the Tasman Sea maintaining the Cold SW flow over New Zealand. Also, the mid level air is very dry so this is excellent for severe storms. I wouldn't be surprised if you get a squall line or even a supercell if the surface to 600 winds improve. Was there a warning for the storm you got today?? I know the BoM doesn't often issue warnings for Darwin so I'd be interested to find out.
