I have been watching low cloud coming from the ENE across the Dandenong Ranges all day.
When I look at the horizon in the opposite direction the cloud seemed to be moving back to the east .
Anybody got an anwser ?

To add to this, I would expect that we will have a much better idea of thunderstorm climatology once there is a reasonable length of record from the various lightning detection systems. Reporting of phenomena (such as thunderstorms) from the existing observational network is patchy at best (and the observational network in the tropics is extremely sparse compared with the scale of a typical thunderstorm). Yes if it has a tin roof, and yes if it is wet and perhaps yes if there are lots of nice earthed conductors in the roof, in which case it might look a little bit like a faraday cage. But if you have a dry tiled roof, no water pipes and not much in the way of power cables... I doubt that half an inch of tile or quarter an inch of fibro is going to make much different to the total breakdown strength, given something which can break down 10km of free air... Maybe if you happen to be standing close enough to something conveniently earthed inside the house... You might just look like the best conductor. On the other hand, you don't hear too often about folks getting zapped inside their houses unless holding a telephone or some such. (I used to be paranoid back in the days when I had a waterbed on the second floor)... I feel that I am safe enough watching the action under my tin verandha, even though there is a 15m spotted gum asking to be zapped right next to it, but I always wear rubber thongs just in case of the ground field from a close strike. But I wonder if it would make any difference... FEAR... !!!! Regards, John. >snip Subject: aus-wx: FEAR... But in these trough situations it is quiet common to see bands of showers and storms moving in an generally E-W direction as they move around the curving part of the trough. (as in the case you described) Give it a little thought about what systems can make showers move E-W and you will see it happens regularly. There's plenty happening over the border by the looks of it. Very dark over there for much of the afternoon. Pea sized hail here at about 5.30pm and 2.5mm rain. Was heavy rain around Albury/Wodonga way about 3pm by what I could see, few quick showers around this area around 3.30pm but not much else. I guess this is going to happen when the system is moving so slowly that it doesn't go far in 24 hours. At the moment, a rain band that went over Sydney and Wollongong this morning and moved out to sea is beginning to head back (SE) towards the coast as the low that was over Sydney today moves around. It has been about 150 kM off the coast throughout the afternoon. Interesting to watch. Even more interesting if your anywhere on the coast south of sydney atm. Currently 11pm here at Brighton with easterlies gusting a good 20kn and increasing by the minute. On what was previously a relatively calm night, this tells me that this low means business. Could be an interesting morning, and thats anywhere around sydney!!!!!
