I'm pretty sure this is the same cell, it was certainly a supercell. I observed a few areas of rotation, including one watching a new updraft go up, and you could physically see it corkscrew as it went up! I also observed what I believed to be a very large and well rounded wall cloud. I had a good view of it, but it was still slightly distant! It persisted for around 15-20mins before it disipated. It was under main developing updraft of the storm, on the southern edge. This is unusual, but this supercell was a right mover. The hailshafts on this were quite impressive, and the structure...oh, amongst the best I've seen!!! I got the same cell that Ben/Jason got later on the day too (we sheltered in the same area!) With hail around 2cm in size, and very strong winds (enough for branches/trees to be knocked down). It was quite scary actually, with the strong winds the hail was making HUGE clonks on the car, upon checking for damage more closely later on I observed a few very small chips in the paintwork on the top of the car that I *don't remember* seeing before. I got hail 5 times today! Including one from the first main cell that moved over the Mt Walker area. This cell gave numerous CG's that were very close, including one that struck a post about 20-30m in front of me! Needed a new change of underwear :) Anyway - lots of footage/pics...will do a report when the storms stop (or I run out of money and/or time to chase the storms, whichever first!) Plenty of activity around the Ipswich area today and yesterday. Todays effort was more widespread, but yesterdays effort wasn't bad either, that Gatton storm had a ripper of radar echo. Started as two pink cells which merged and then went red, firstly in what appeared to be spiral, then a hook as it passed over gatton, finishing in a beautiful S shape. Fairly decent hail shower at Mt. Crosby around 3:30pm thisarv., plenty of small hail to 2.5cm - quite a bit of leaf stripping - but very little wind. Lightning everywhere around to about 10pm. Total precip. 19mm. Very photogenic updrafts & click went the camera. Tried to do my storm spotting bit, but the BoM wern't answering phones. Forgot that I had left the atrium roof open - so 1 inch hail in the house... (ooo Jimmy you'd like that) Yelps from the wife as she got pelted trying to shut it... I was too busy out with camera - wasn't very popular. Still, if anyone > > else has checked out the damage too, I'd be interested in their thoughts. There are a number of potential reasons for this. The most likely one is that all the trees fell at or near the same time with the same strong wind. Subsequent changes in wind direction that might have been of the same strength or even stronger would have had nothing left to damage or trees to down. Thus, keep in mind that the order in which the damage occurred is important. The second possibility is that the rotational winds that are in the same direction as storm motion will be stronger (by the speed of storm motion) and those on the side of the vortex that oppose storm motion will be weaker by the same magnitude. BTW, one of the things one needs to look for when surveying damage is to look for evidence of a 'convergent' flow vs a 'divergent' flow. Tornadic wind flows are typically convergent when you look at wind direction either side of the damage path. These convergent flows are often seen in association with the trailing region of the tornado. Whereas the wind direction of a microburst is divergent in nature. However, not uncommonly microbursts are found flanking the tornado, especially toward the beginning of a tornadic vortex damage path. So, at times both forms of damage can be found nearby one another. The RFD is commonly associated with microbursts. Les ************************ Leslie R. During that stage the echo top will decrease, the hook echo will 'wrap up' and disappear, and the low level echo will actually decrease in intensity. Those using radar as a warning tool must always keep this in mind or else they may actually cancel a tornado warning at the very time the tornado is developing or reaching its most severe stage. Hi Everyone,
Today is looking excellent for severe storms in eastern NSW with the models I have seen predicting a surface low to form over the central west and to move across to the coast by tonight.  Added to this, there is an upper trough approaching with a jetstream developing by the evening as well as a deep layer of moisture over the ranges and coast!!!!!  This is really looking like an IDEAL setup.

They didn't say there were any strong winds, but this was the same cell that I ran into south of Peaks Crossing (north of Boonah), and it certainly had strong-severe winds!!! So no doubt, golf ball hail was quite a possibility. Geez I'd hate to get my car under huge hail! It's still three days away and BOM is mentioning heavy local falls possible in every district. This is not like BOM unless there is a very good chance of this happening. Plus a very moist tropical and unstable airmass should be ahead of the change giving very good chances of t'storms. I really think it is Adelaide's turn now to get a t'storm we haven't had a decent one since April. The forecast is for Showers and thunderstorms developing probably around midday. Well I can only hope that the moist tropical and unstable airstream does come our way instead of always just to the east or north of the central district. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Some great pilius as these congestus built into the cirrus layer. I can see a number of CB off to the SE as well. Judging by the Cb I can see, I wouldn't be surprised to see warnings issued for futher south than they already are. Canberra has had heavy showers through the morning which cleared about an hour ago. Moisture doesn't seem to be a problem today, lack of surface heating may. Whether Canberra gets some storms this afternoon will depend on whether the mid-upper levels are stabilising. The Wagga sounding showed a 500mb temp of -18. If that holds, things are looking good. Is that debris at the bottom middle of m30? Was there much damage? What rating? F0 by the look of it? Did the funnel reach the ground? Did the funnel rotation look like it was out of a film shot in the US? Was there a debris cloud?

Yesterday even it was struck by lightning!! It's hopefully being fixed as we speak but it looks like we'll have to make do with broad radars and the local Gympie/Grafton radars. Great day for it to go down! Several people are out chasing what is already a very big storm day over the inland so far, extending onto the coast in the next couple of hours. Hopefully a storm currently situated NW of Ipswich (which is spread an anvil across Brisbane) can make it to the coast - as long as it doesn't do any damage. While on that subject, I don't know why there isn't a Severe Thunderstorm Advice for SE Qld yet, although maybe when everyone gets this email there will be one... Another thing...there are WNW and NW winds inland and NNE winds along the coast to about Ipswich now. This could mean storms are becoming severe right about now. Anyway see ya! For those who are sitting at there computers unaware, at this present moment there is an absolute monster of storm in NE NSW, heading for the NSW/QLD border. It has a massive blob of red (100+mm/h rainfall echoes). There is widespread activity right up the eastern ranges, from some stuff around Sydney, right up to Bundaberg. I am sure there are chasers all over this one. Jimmy and Michael were in the area.

Last night a storm developed just E of my house around 11pm and gave a beautiful lightning show that was very photogenic. Today I chased in the area between Casino and Kyogle - I didn't have to venture too far, there was just so much development. A very large system formed on the Richmond Range from about 1pm and just kept growing - a massive plume of anvil spread eastwards with plenty of mammatus overhead, and a solid curtain of precipitation to my west. There was another area of storm development to the SW, but not as strong. To the far S around Coffs Harbour a very large storm has formed, and Jimmy was on to that after having stayed at Grafton overnight. This storm to my west was very slow moving, edging E-NE. Plenty of CGs and inflow lowerings on the NE side. At first I was located east of the cell but moved north along the Summerland Way to be about 10ks S of Kyogle and NE of the storm. This cell soon became severe in appearance, with intense precipitation on its SW side and a beautiful curve of inflow bandind on the NE. Several suspect lowerings formed along this boundary, and over this the hailstorm green tinge. The updraft was soon overhead and CGs were hitting rather close. I had to decide whether to barrel north up the highway out of the storm or find a vantage point. I did the latter after I spotted a large carport at the side of a field next to a dirt road. The farmer was still ploughing the field but soon returned and had no problems with me stopping there. He headed off home just before the storm hit at 3pm. It was quite worrying at first, this menacing arc of precip heading my way. I just hoped there would not be large wind blown hail. Swathes of rain were driven in by 40knot W winds. This was soon followed by hail to 1cm, though this was quite sparse and did not last fortunately. It seemed that the heaviest rain passed just to my south. I headed through the rain back south hoping to see what the other storm was up to. I wasn't disappointed !! A pronounced wall cloud was about 10ks to my SSW and then I noticed scuds under this - then it was a column of scuds - bloody hell a funnel !!! I screeched the car to a halt beside the highway for photos and video at 3.20pm. It was a definite column of cloud not extending to the ground that I could make out, but a lovely sight. I managed to stand on a nest of ants at this point and received a nasty bite that bugged me for the next hour. But who cares, a funnel. It lasted a few minutes before dissipating. I moved to a side road to continue to watch as an extensive line of activity stretched from the persisting wall cloud westwards for about 30ks. CGs were going beserk along this whole line, many lowerings formed under updrafts and a shelf cloud developed on the SW part of the line. It was a magic sight. Within 20 minutes it had spread to my location with very large drops of rain and gusty S outflow winds. A few bits of hail fell but nothing much. There was extensive cloud turbulence overhead before heavy rain hit. Further activity developed along this E-W line with lovely CGs and intense precipitation curtains. It was apparent a large storm was now just to my NE (4.30pm). I moved south a caught a glimpse of something magic to the far south. Sure enough the supercell Jimmy had been on to. It was absolutely huge, just like the one I saw in SE QLD the evening before: punching up around the 15-16 km in height. Massive backshearing, and overshooting dome. Masses of boiling cumulus surrounded the W and NW flanking line. And it was perfectly illuminated by the lowered sun (it was now just before 5pm). I decided to head east towards home, hopefully to get a better view of the supercell, but it became obscured soon afterwards and I was caught in a large area of outflow dominant rain, with some quite heavy falls between Casino and Lismore. When I arrived home at 6pm the area was under the influence of 30-40 know NE winds from the outflow of the large cell further up the coast. Stratus streamed inland and some further congestus popped up over Lismore. To the ENE a cell passed over Byron Bay with intense CGs, and then became illuminated by the sunset. Lovely ! Another great day, and AVN has the Liftex Index progged to -7 over us again tomorrow afternoon! Thanks to John Graham for radar updates. cheers, Michael ============================================================= Michael Bath mailto:mbath at ozemail.com.au McLeans Ridges http://australiasevereweather.com/ NE NSW Australia http://www.lightningphotography.com/ ASWA Secretary http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ ============================================================= +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [203.54.90.84] From: "S G" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: The future Date: Sun, 05 Nov 2000 20:17:12 CST X-OriginalArrivalTime: 05 Nov 2000 09:47:13.0044 (UTC) FILETIME=[5F99DD40:01C0470D] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com This is fairly off the topic. I was just thinking imagine what weather services will be like say in ten years time or so. I wreckon we will get 3D images of everything - advancing storm systems, not just t'storms by the way. I know BOM already uses 3D models of t'storms etc but I think they will become widely available and very advanced. There have been such improvements in weather services over the last 15 years, the mind boggles at the future. My ispiration for this thought wasn't drugs:-) It was the weather company's excellent lightning tracker, this is just an example of great technology. By the way a big deal is being made here in Adelaide on weather reports about Wednesday due to all of the warnings already issued to farmers on raised dust and high humidity for Tues/Wed. It looks like it could be a beast of a system, haven't had decent rain since mid October,(about the 19th). I wish someone would write about what they think this system could or will produce especially for Adelaide. I myself have a good feeling that there will be a thunderstorm but I have already been let down many times this year along with other weather lovers in SA, where are you all??? _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I was driving towards toowoomba and saw hundreds (well maby not quite but pretty close to it) of cg's and heaps of sheet lighting. it is perhaps the most powerful storm i have ever experienced. some of the lightning was with within 150m of the car with instaneous thunder with the lightning. as i was looking out the window i saw a bolt come down little more than 100m away and stuck a tree, literly blew it up and showered sparks everywhere. we could actually see the diameter of the lighting!!it was soo close. one of best experiences ive had. i saw a town get blacked out as well. it was unreal. there wasn't any hail where we were but im sure there was some somewhere along the line. thanks nate _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. We have some activity off the coast, south of The Entrance, looks around 10km's out to sea, some nice sheet lightening lighting up the distant sky, moving N/NE at the momemt.  Will probably swing up the mid north coast for a while.

We had a doosy of a thunderstorm here last night around 5am.  I swear the cell was right above our house.  The lightening was lighting up the house, didn't need the conventional light switch to see the rest of the rooms.  Typically lasted for around 20minutes and blew away.  The noise was actually vibrating the walls.

I love going into Summer, not only for the warm beach weather, but for the afternoon and early morning storms. My friends think I'm nuts when I take the kids out to the porch to watch a good show.

Welcome to the list and I share the same sentiments as others already expressed... Just a note on today's stuff...not quite the same storms that affected NE NSW affected the Central Coast today. However, I was chasing round the Central Coast area this afternoon so know what you mean! Those storms actually developed to the west...around Richmond in NW Sydney and tracked ENE towards Gosford. I managed to get into the storm that went across Gosford around 4:45pm or so, experiencing some torrential rain around Calga and then on the old Pacific Highway between Calga and Kariong. There was a fair bit of thunder, but I couldn't see any lightning :( This was mainly due to the blanket of stratocumulus(the low cloud that covered the Central coast and Sydney all day) which was a bit of a pain. If that Sc hadn't been there, it would have been a great chasing afternoon. Oh well, a good little afternoon chase after all... Great downdrafts - some causing major dustdevils & vortices in the dust. Heavy rain almost saw us bogged on a road in the middle of dammwell nowhere!! (Mental note Holden Calais are NOT good 4WD vehicles!!). Sunday - travlled to same place after seeing some of the hardest updraftes ever (got pics!!). Got there saw some good pulse action. Left there a little disappointed - went to Adeliade River (about 150Km or so) to chase a nice hard Cell - then watched a severe cell develop and produce an amazing lightning display with action of 3 - 4 per second!! On Satpic appeared as a massive blob!! Anway was worth every second of driving!! Many thanx to Jacob for telling me that it was NOT a person on a bike in the middle of nowhere but rather it was a road post!! hehehe. Great weekend really - 600km & great company!! Pics will be developed when I can - and new website address given shortly! Paul in Darwin. PS Congrats to Matt Smith - well deserved from all the hard work & busts he has suffered!! +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
