I was talking to jimmy deguara not long ago and he said it was hailing in Willow Tree for about 15 to 20 min this afternoon. Hail size was about 2cm. He is staying in Tamworth tonight, so tomorrow (sat)he will be in a great position to chase in the target area of north nsw. As for the sydney tornado.....I managed to take several pics of what looked like definite funnel clouds. Will develop my film tomorrow and hope it comes out.Lets hope sydney fires up again tomorrow! Hi all

I was watching the same event that Matt Smith saw from my work location at Granville (just west of the Bold Street bridge).  I had an excellent view of it from the second storey of our new office. I watched it for probably 15 minutes from 4.20pm (0520UTC) and estimated that it was 2-3km away to the west ie South Wentworthville and Greystanes.  At this time also a shelf cloud to the south was moving north-eastwards

This wall cloud descended out of  a low-level CB base (which I estimated was at 1500-1600 feet) on the NW flank of the storm system (which I understand is the correct position) and had itself a base of about 150-200 feet. I was amazed as I have never seen anything like this before and although it did not develop into the conventional shape in the end, it was clear that there was some sort of  of clockwise rotation of the NE winds feeding into the wall cloud maybe a kilometre across.  You could see dust being stirred up under the wall cloud and being lifted up. As well as some sort of rotation I could see within the wall cloud  area there were thin wisps of cloud being lifted up to about 500 feet and then down again (like the wake of a plane).

This had been preceeded by another wall cloud about 10 minutes earlier maybe a kilometre or two to the north with showed signs of thin wispy cloud being lifted up from about 500 feet and also signs of dust and dirt being stirred upwards. However this northerly member became less obvious by 4.30pm.  We had about 10mm size hail from about 4.20-4.25pm then torrential rain for about 10 minutes before a little more hail. During this time the wind was either fresh easterly or north-easterly

Unfortunately I did not have any camera, so I am looking forwarded to see any pics Matt has taken

Hey!!!!

Just a quick report in to confirm that this storm has dropped a tornado of some description and it has apparently gone accross the suburbs of Merrylands, Pendle Hill and Wenworthville area. Matt Smith has possibly bagged the tornado on film.  I chased up to Liverpool where there was obvious rotation, and massive shelf cloud. I recieved 20c hail at Mt Pritchyard and gusty whirly winds further on towards Fairfield as the storm moved over.
Looking west and there are more towers going up to my WSW. Will keep you posted. Got plenty of pics too!

Scored a nice corkscrew updraft, another funnel, and a beautiful storm that Ben has posted some pics of, on the WNW edge, there may have been a meso & WC under there, but while I was very close, I had some trees in the way!!! So it's difficult to tell. It had very strong inflow, around 20kn where I was, but mum later phoned as this storm passed over the edge of the farm. She described what was gale force inflow before the storm arrived!!! (Ie, the inflow was breaking small branches off trees), followed then by horizontal rain and hail with winds in the opposite direction as the storm moved over. She didn't have much of a look, but she said that there were numerous large branches down, and the set of table and chairs went flying about 20m or so. There were lots of CG's from the storm, many pulsing several times! Many had loud booming thunder. Ok my computer is buggered and i have to fork out over a grand (considerable chunk of my savings) to buy a new one.... im using Malcolm's computer at the moment to send this email. If anyone out there wants to send me some money for a new one, feel free. well what a day... To me, the events leading up to the tornado were very interesting. I went to a net cafe and checked the models/radar at 11ish am cause my computer is dead, saw storms developing on the ranges in the pink and red, headed out, saw some nice CG's from a storm just west of penrith that moved NE and decayed. I was at Penrith Uni and Matt Pearce called me saying he could see a massive storm to the S/SW. I couldnt see it because mid level junk was in the way. 10 minutes later it cleared and i could see a MASSIVE storm down towards Bowral. Fantastic backsheared anvil, HUGE updraughts pushing up on the NW flank... people were messaging me saying there was an STW out and large hail had been reported somewhere. I arrivd at Camden on a small hill and watched a huge wallcloud under a fresh updraught, CG's pulsing 5-7 times every 15-20 seconds, and it was by far the blackest/darkest/scariest looking precip area i have ever seen. It was approaching slowly so i retreated back towards Bringelly road. I was getting a tad confused by reports of which direction the storm was moving, but daniel weatherhead was in liverpool somewhere getting 20c piece sized hail ! i hadnt seen hail over 2cm so i wanted to head there and see what i could find. Someone rang me, i think it was andrew from wollongong, and said there was a nice area of red/pink between bankstown and the city. I decided to go up Mamre Road, and back onto the M4 heading eastbound. I thought i would have missed the storm and it would have cleared north by the time i got around Parramatta. How wrong i was. A few KM before Parra, the rain got VERY VERY heavy. I was not expecting this going by the radar report earlier. Cars had slowed to a crawl and people had parked under overpasses etc. I continued on at 40km/h and then all of a sudden it stopped raining. From absolutly PISSING down, to NOTHING. On the video camera, i recorded all this and as soon as that happened i said to myself "I'm not liking this" or "I dont like this" From what i can gather i had entered the region of the hook echo, when it becomes rain wrapped the yanks call it the "bears cage". Anyway, with the rain stopping, just up ahead i saw a massive lowering, scud's rapidly being sucked up into it, the rotation bands in the cloud above the lowering was mezmorizing, i had only seen photos of this type of stuff on the net ! The lowering looked like it was almost on the ground (i couldnt see for sure) with rapid motion. I pulled over on the M4 and hopped out and got a photo or 2, then drove closer as it passed over the road a km or 2 ahead of me where it dissipated. I must stress i did not see any debri under the base, it all happened so fast and was over within 30 seconds or so. Try driving, stopping, taking a photo or 2, and videoing it all in the space of 30 seconds, you dont have time to think hehe. ANYWAY the southern side of the hook was *JUST* to my south with a wall of hail and rain about to engulf me, i kissed the view of the meso and wall cloud goodbye as the rain hit and everyone pulled over and stopped. Hail just over 2cm mixed with rain hit and continued for about 5-10 minutes, Daniel weatherhead had called me saying he had heard reports on ABC radio of people witnessing funnel clouds/rotation/debri being sucked up onto the air etc over the greystanes/wentworthville area. Now for my little dig at the Bureau. ABC radio had people calling in with there experiences during the storm, with a number of accounts of people seeing funnels and rotation and debri being lifted up in the air. The presenter spoke live to a BoM person, and when asked about tornadoes, he downplayed it something shocking. along the lines of "we do get tornadoes in australia but they are rare, and what people are seeing is more likely a downburst" ! I have this convo recorded on the video camera. The thing is, the BoM have doppler, radar, a supercell tracking NE across sydney... i just dont get it. Sure they have a warning out for "destructive winds" but when there is CLEAR EVIDENCE of a supercell with a hook echo, i find it unbelievable there was not a torando warning issued. IF this had been ANY stronger, there would have been a MAJOR catastrophe across sydney with many people dead and injured. But if that had happened i guess the BoM would downplay it and say to the media it was a "freak event". Anyway, thats about it. I have photos and video, which wont be online for a while until i get a computer... I also met up with Max king who was at wentworthville and could see debri being sucked up into the air, confirming the tornado. We did a damage assesment and found clear evidence of convergence where the tornado touched down. Ok here's hoping today fires as well, if anyone wants to give updates feel free. I will be out and about, and a MASSIVE thanks to everyone who messaged/called me. The info was very valuable and welcomed. (andrew from wollongong, dave carol from bathurst, Mr Weatherhead, Dr Pearce, list goes on and on) (thanks to Mal as well for letting me take over his computer for an hour or 2:) (Dann can you update the website recent events please, i cant) Matt Smith http://www.sydneystormchasers.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [203.54.88.69] From: "S G" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Get a grip jannah!!! Was there a tornado out there somewhere? In the latest precis forecast for Adelaide for this Wednesday the forecast reads: shower or thunderstorm ahead of a late change and 30 degrees. This is the first time for ages the word thunderstorm has been used in a headline for Adelaide. The change looks fairly significant, hopefully there will be some decent moisture ahead of it unlike the last change that had heaps of moisture ahead of it but too far to the east of Adelaide instead. Some of those are absolutely brilliant - especially the end ones - well done!  I wish I had stayed in Sydney rather than having gone to the Hunter!!

PS.  I presume the specs in m30.jpg are water droplets on the lens and not debris being lifted?

I headed west from my place at 12.00. Storms had already developed from the NW through to the SW, mainly on the eastern slopes of the Great Divide. By 1pm I was at Mullumgum which is about 30km west of Casino on the Bruxner Highway. A storm with intense precipitation and a nice flanking line to its SW was edging along the Richmond Range. I wasn't all that familiar with the area, but continued on to Mallanganee where the highway rises up about 300 metres to pass over the Richmond Range. There was a dirt road heading north along the top of the range, which turned out to be the most beautiful storm spotting location: the road was at the very top of the ridge which is aligned N-S, and there are virtually no trees thanks to the cattle farmers! What a view - and in all directions! I stayed here a while and watched the first storm edge towards the NE, while new cells gathered to my SW and W. Shortly before 2pm the cell to the SW developed a lovely ragged base and soon after the first CGs were occurring. These became quite frequent (every few seconds) with deep rumbling booms spreading through the valleys. Soon intense precipitation with a hail shaft formed and only about 3ks S of me. The storm was very slow moving. It was apparent new activity was forming on the S and SW side of the storm with new rain free ragged looking bases. I decided to head back east as this activity seemed it would generally propagate that way, which it did. By 3.20pm I was back in Casino with the storm bearing down on the area. Several regions of intense precipitation and probable hail shafts were observed. A detached sort of shelf cloud formed north of the precipitation core just before it hit town. Around 3.30pm the first large drops fell, followed by some small hail. Heavy rain continued for about 20 mins with gutters in town awash. As this storm started to clear the area, another was becoming visible to the SSW. Calls from John Graham and Dann confirmed the pulsey nature of the storms around the North Coast (but most into the red on radar), but a more significant storm was making its way NE. I caught sight of a magnificent inflow region on this storm's NW flank. There were several lowerings and the whole feature appeared to be a wall cloud, but I was a little too far north of it to be sure. A prong formed on the left (eastern side) of this and a funnel shaped protrusion in the middle. This unfortunately did not last long and the whole inflow region soon dissipated, and not long after the whole storm weakened. A call from Jimmy who has made his way to Grafton indicated the storm looked supercellular from his southern vantage point, but was surprised to hear how quickly it decayed (like the Sydney tornado storm the day before). I was rather pissed off it collapsed like that on me as I was in perfect position to observe severe features, I also had a terrible headache, and was just going to head home when I noticed a marked lowering to the W from a new storm. At first I was still going to abandon watching it, but it soon became very photogenic and very interesting, and seemed to be moving in a NE direction, bringing it closer. It very much looked like this: http://australiasevereweather.com/photography/photos/1996/1231mb21.jpg but about 20ks away rather than just the 5 or so in this picture. I moved to a better location and watched this storm punch out CGs and develop some more intense rainfall areas. It was after 5pm now so the colours from the sun getting lower in the sky were nice. There was a distinct green tinge in the clouds for at least 20 minutes. I headed home around 6pm as this storm petered out. About 7pm this evening an enormous storm came into view to the N. This was near Beudesert in QLD at the time, and with the setting sun was a magical sight. This beast was around 50,000 feet high and had a huge backshear. Awesome !!!
