There have been reports of damage in the northern suburbs of Rockhampton, with severe winds bringing down trees and powerlines, blacking out several thousand homes. Luckily the Capricornia district is not exactly densily populated, as their appeared to be many other severe storms around. A couple of juicy obs - Middle Percy, in the Central Coast and Whitsunday district, recorded 136mm to 9am this morning (most probably from a storm? there were some MONSTERS up there overnight). A rain rate of ~97mm/h was recorded at Heron Island in the early hours of Thursday morning, and ~62mm of rain was dumped on Heron Island in just over 2 hours this afternoon. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Goler" To: Sent: Thursday, November 02, 2000 10:51 PM Subject: Re: aus-wx: Outflow boundary?? apologies try again > > Here is an IR loop showing the evolution of this arc > > http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Weather/2000_11_02/Austirloop.gif > > > On Thu, 2 Nov 2000, Jimmy Deguara wrote: > > > http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/20001102/gmsd.jpg is the proper > > address > > > > >I am quite busy but I had to mention about this. Well what a night, after reading the posts on here you all wish you had this storms as well.. I would have posted a message last night but my modem was fried during the storm.. Silly me should have turned it off. I live only 3 km from Mt Panorama and my house faces South. I had the perfect view from west, south, and south west. Which I mentioned in email earlier last night extends from Orange direction to Oberon. At 6.45pm heard on radio scanner from Police that a severe hailstorm had hit, was at frriends place and decided to head home before I was caught in it.. At 7.30pm called Jimmy on phone and told him about lightning I was seeing continuously around Blayney area. Each 5 min I was watching this it was getting worst and getting very dark.. 8pm : the lightning had finally reached Mt Panorama and there were CG's every second or so, I was on mobile ph to Matt Smith while some of these strikes hit the ground at Mt Panorama, lighting up the sky. It was a sight for sore eyes. I do wish I had a decent camera to record these images from last night.. At one stage about 8.30pm was watching from window inside when a lightning strike would have hit only 500 metres away, I think it hit a tree and a bright red/orange flash lit up the sky and scared the daylights out of me, I fell backwards over a chair from the shear shock. Im sure you will all be laughing now.. About 8.30 - 8.45pm the rain finally started, it was bucketing down, gutters filled in about 5 min. In regards to blackouts, there was heaps off. Molong areas still had people off this morning, West Bathurst areas also off. Orange, Mudgee, Gulgong, Manildra. I would say most of the Rural Orange areas off due to lightning as I just found out. If anyone would have saved some images from the lighting and radar, could you please forward to my email of davidkc at advanceenergy.com.au or davidkc at nia.net.au . I would appreciate them, since my PC modem was out of action.. As Matt Smith said, more storms for this area today..... BRING IT ON!!! Hi Everyone,

The first storm of the day has developed to the north of Lithgow. It has just gone green on radar with a couple of lightning stirkes showing up on the tracker. Hopefully this is just the start of what could be a really interesting day as the BOM's thunderstorm outlook is going for the possibility of severe storms in central eastern parts of NSW.

Both report powerful boiling updrafts in the Hunter, (as usual), but Dann also pointed to a backshearing anvil around Bowral. I was looking at this cell from a NE perspective and there was a few CG's falling just behind the escarpment at West Dapto, and was just starting to get some big spots of rain in Port Kembla. My gut feel after the last couple of big storms that have formed in this region and tracked NE along the escarpment, under similar wind and moisture conditions is that this cell has a good chance of going severe (ie hail at least). If anyone is looking for somewhere to chase I would recommend keeping an eye on the area around Bowral and the Illawarra escarpment. As for me, stuck at work for another couple of hours yet. If anyone is watching radar and sees this storm go red or other cells which may be heading for the Illawarra, please call me on 0418 671 851. I finish work at 3:00pm, and will be right to chase after I ride home at 3:30. BRING IT ONNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hey!!!!

Just a quick report in to confirm that this storm has dropped a tornado of some description and it has apparently gone accross the suburbs of Merrylands, Pendle Hill and Wenworthville area. Matt Smith has possibly bagged the tornado on film.  I chased up to Liverpool where there was obvious rotation, and massive shelf cloud. I recieved 20c hail at Mt Pritchyard and gusty whirly winds further on towards Fairfield as the storm moved over.
Looking west and there are more towers going up to my WSW. Will keep you posted. Got plenty of pics too!

Starting at 1115 they started shooting up, displaying very rapid explosive growth, advices out at 1155, large hail and heavy rain, at 1200 i was driving a truck up the pacific highway and i could see 3 large anvils out west, soon as i got it back to work i got the f--- out of there!!, had to go to the spot to check it out from there, many cg's and thunder from the west and southwest, checked radar, oooh colour!,, checked list, i love this list, fantastic. The way the storms brewed was awesome, they shot up so fast, you could see it like timelapse with the naked eye, from 1pm onwards huge system down illawarra way was starting to head north north east, went out to hornsby to watch from a park there, it was 2 hours of bliss, im starved for seeing massive cumulus, this was like such a hit: ).. STW's on the news, large hail reports, liverpool and others,, the huge storm grazed me to the east of hornsby, it was red on radar, plenty of hail shafts to be seen. Came home, checked radar, still plenty around, more huge billowage straight west (nw of richmond).. sightings from our own matt smith and max king of a touch down at wentworthville. Further to this story my girlfriends workpartners husband was at wenty leuges club and their roof was taken off in the storm with many witnesses saying they saw a tornado as well. right now loud thunder in the east, Many roads at a standstill through west, inner western sydney, including m4, (traffic lights out), pure chaos, great isnt it?!.. thatll show you for making all that profit insurance companies, still pink stuff around on radar, catch all later,, looking forward to all the reports streaming in,, TSTORMS!!!! _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Storm lashes Sydney Severe thunderstorms are sweeping parts of Sydney, with reports of hail stones the size of golf balls. Emergency Services say torrential rain and hail have brought traffic to a standstill on the M2 Freeway The weather bureau's senior meteoroglist says the storms will continue for at least another hour. Article number 2 Sydney storm causes flooding, hail damage Severe thunderstorms have lashed several suburbs of Sydney, causing localised flooding and hail damage. Hailstones the size of golfballs have blanketed some suburbs in Sydney's south-west, causing trecherous conditions for motorists. Most of the severe storm cells have moved out to sea after crossing suburbs from Liverpool to Hornsby. Emergency crews have responded to a spate of flooded houses, shops and factories. The train was only on the storm's northern edge at this stage but I still saw marble size hail at Lidcombe and when we got to Pendle Hill, this incredible lowering. I was really on the wrong side of the carriage in fact the tornado would have been straight ahead of the train, I think. However there was debris (although not much) flying around (not rotating, although it could have been as the moving train made it hard to be sure) under this low overhanging cloud. At first I thought there was rotation but I thought, no, it's just the train's movement. Seems I might have been wrong. When I got to Seven Hills I stopped on the rail bridge and looking towards the southeast there was an extensive hail shaft directly behind the overhanging cloud. It started to rain as the bus left to take me the 2kms home north from the station but rain here was only brief..a princely sum of 0.4mm. I never thought I'd get that close to a tornado..pity I didn't actually see it. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Jane ONeill" To: "Aussie Weather" Subject: aus-wx: Sydney images Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 20:31:00 +1100 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2919.6600 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Have a look at these images of Sydney this afternoon - unfortunately the ones at the 'right' time weren't saved :( - but these are pretty good. Hi Everyone,
Dave Croan and I set out at around 11am after checking the conditions.  Unfortunately,we later found out we would have been better off staying in Sydney - perhaps heading to our usual storm watching spot of Horsley Park.  Anyway, I suppose we have to be pleased with what we got.  After meeting Jimmy in Singleton, we drove towards Muswellbrook but turned off torwards Denman.  We watched and waited for some time before Dave and I decided that there was not much point in sticking around as most of the action appeared to be to the east.  We also thought we should start heading home.
After crossing some hills, the sky to the south became darker and more menacing.  Not long after, a lowering appeared and as we got closer, rotation was evident.  I tried capturing some on video but the video did not turn out very well, unfortunately.  The cell was slow moving and no lightning evident although there were a few rumbles of thunder and the sky above was very dark.  We followed it for a while and noticed further rotation and a smooth, cylindrical appearence to the base, although there were no funnels as such.
We watched for a while, hoping for a funnel but none appeared and it drifted away.  There were a few spots of rain but the sun returned and that was that.  Then we heard of the reports of the Sydney storm with the tornado and realised it was probably better to have stayed home.  None the less, upon reaching home, I noticed the radar showed a big cell near Scone - to the north-east of where we were and wondered if it may have resulted from the cell we had seen earlier...

Watched from work as the Sydney storm took shape just to the west of Wollongong and drift slowly NE into Sydney. Home at 5pm and things looked rather poor. However around 8.30pm a storm system fired near Nowra so I headed off. Some great CG's, including one at Gerringong that landed about 100m from the car in a paddock. Closer to home around 9.30pm torrential rain fell in the Shellharbour area. Unfortunately this caused a nasty looking car accident at Dunmore. Local streets flooded from kerb to kerb.
