Sort of gnerally every 10-15 minutes I at least heard a distant rumble (although in the dead of the night thunder can travel a very long way), and a decent rumble was heard a little more frequently! This is the stuff left over from the storms that formed in SW QLD and NW NSW yesterday I'm assuming anyway. I've been perpetually plagued with computer problems at the moment, and not 5mins as I turned the monitor off and vowed not to come back until after 5am, did the archive programme crash *sigh* Anyway, I'd be expecting more t'storms in the Downs today (I would go chasing if I could there), and then perhaps some more thunderstorms/thundery rain for us tonight. We might see this clear tomorrow, followed by more thunderstorms in the afternoon! Looks like an interesting upcoming week for us, we might see the trough lingering in the SE quarter of QLD and the NE quarter of NSW for the next 4-6 days! -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "bussie" To: "weather list" Subject: aus-wx: Conditions Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 06:55:19 +1100 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com No storms here over night but certainly looked like it before night fall. There has been lots of red and yellow in the line until the Wagga radar dropped out for wind measurements. The fact that the line is still being picked up by the distant Sydney radarshows that it must have a fair bit of punch. I would estimate arrival in the next 1-2 hours and will report its impact. Today's wx has been overcast with rain periods and lots of very low cloud/mist. A few breaks hve opened up in the last hour but unfortunately no views of the advancing beast. I think the producers have a real nerve calling it The Eye of the Storm!!! Last night's episode was pathetic about 99% of the show was about animals which I knew was the case but the 1% about the actual weather was pathetic. They brought up a really good diagram of Antartica with two warm and two cold areas travelling around saying it has a big affect on the rainfall etc. I was really looking forward to a detailed explanation but that was all they said. Plus they could of included more impacts of strong winter storms in the south of Australia. They mentioned Autum, then basically skipped winter(the most important time) and then focused on spring for the next three quaters of the show. How many times have people seen animals having sex and how they reproduce on documentaries. Other documentaries have had more about the weather when they are actually meant to be just about animals than this one. Plus the last episode about La Nina made it sound like tropical cyclones only come when La Nina develops. I imagine many people who don't know much about the weather, (about 99% of Australians) would now say when there is a TC that La Nina is also here. Sorry but this show is very dissapointing. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Hi everyone,
Just looking at today's sounding for Darwin and I wonder if there may be some severe storms on the way for the tropics as there appears to be very large amoust of available convective energy and also very dry air at mid levels with a good layer of moist air below....Shear is not be best but it still looks like there is the potential for some microburst activity given the dry and and large CAPE.

In all 630km driven, heading through Mt Dandenong to Warburton/Mt Donna Buang and then headed south to Warragul and then oscillated between east, west and south of there. Unfortunately, the roads through the Dandenongs and around Warburton were obstructed by trees, but there was only some cumulus congestus with debris middle level cloud around, so no great loss. Occasionally I'd pass through a shower reaching perhaps 20mm/hr rates. However this was my first time visiting these areas and I saw some great scenery along the way. And boy, the view from Mt Dandenong is spectacular! Having no idea where to go from here, I decided to head south to Warragul as judging by the map there appeared to be a better road network around there. On the way I saw a lowering on a Cb but it was too far off and the contrast wasn't great, so I don't know how well it'll appear in the photos I took of it. A bit later on (~4pm) I saw a nice Cb to the south of Yarragon which I wanted to get ahead of (everything was propagating to the southeast). However, I got completely stuffed up on the roads leading to the south, most of which were windy and dirt. As a result I had to go slow to avoid losing the back end of the car and spinning out for the second time, which ain't too good when there are no guard rails on the road and there's a 10m drop off the edge :) After failing to reach this and now heading back north, I saw some nice beefy cumulus congestus which seemed to form northward of the previously mentioned storm (~5pm). Gaps in the middle level debris cloud showed nice strong updrafts, and it's true size was shown which completely knocked my socks off, as I didn't expect it to be that big. Located directly below this cloud were the cooling towers of the power station at Loy (something), and this condensation cloud was feeding right into the cumulus, leaving a brown "stain" on the lower portions. Incidently, the low level scud to the south of these towers were moving to the north. A this stage, a Cb was located further to the north with some more scuddy lowerings associated with it. Once again I attempted to get to the east of this by taking that (north-south) highway which goes from near Morwell to Yarram. However I don't know what happened, but it seemed as though this system weakened. Anyway, I stopped at a lookout (~7pm) and heard some thunder to the northwest. By this stage the lower ~40 degs of sky from the west to the north was diffuse indicating rain, and this is where I saw a flash of lighting. So I headed back to the north from whence I came and passed through one strong shower which caused me to slow down to 50km/h in a 100 zone with the wipers on full. Quite a lot of water flowing around the sides of the roads after this. No doubt would've been (at least) pink on the radar. The best I could do with the lightning was about 3 strikes in 3 mins through this shower. I took 3 rolls of pictures, although I'm hoping that the last roll (which contains the most interesting pics) hasn't stuffed up on me in the camera. All in all, I had a good day as I at least got to photograph something :) Did anyone (Anthony C. perhaps, if you got your computer working that is) manage to save some broad Melbourne radar loops from today? Ooooppps, this dragged on longer than I expected. Cheers -- Robert A.
