LOL Did you attempt to find any damage? Did the cb begin to mature afterwards with rain developing from the base along with the development of lightning and thunder. That is often the progression with 'land-spouts'. The tornado forms during the congestus phase of the cloud growth and the tornado often dissipates as the cb matures. Now, here's the fix. I found a roll of film the other week and got it developed to find out that it is about 2 years old. Only knew this 'cause it had some photos of my last trip to Bali on it. Photos were clear as a bell, damn good camera the old Yashica. Anyway, there was one photo of a lit up cloud with a bolt coming out the front of it and a nice protruberence through the top. But! when my sister in laws boyfriend put it onto the computer and a floppy he left it in paint format and the bloody thing takes up 400k+. I don't know how to do too much stuff with images on my computer/printer (read abacus/etch-a-sketch) so I was hoping that some one might be able to crop it a bit. If anyone out there can do this feel free to drop me a line so I can e-mail it to you and let you work your magic. Wx wise the closest I've had to any action was a shower(hot, soap, shampoo type shower) with a flickering fluro and #2 son banging on the door. Spent 30 minutes this morning with the youngest daughter watching some birds build a nest in the tree close to the house. The storms a few days ago have done the trick by washing the city down and sending all the pollution/smoke out to sea. Now that there is no chance of severe weather there should be chase reports being filed left, right, and centre :). To my understanding the water temp there is no higher than 25 degrees so potential for any development would be limited, but it could be interesting if it moves or develops North. At present, water temps are between 26-27 degrees in the Central Coral Sea. Any thoughts? Below is the forecast. CHEERS: Chris Nitso EXTENDED OUTLOOK( issued at 11:35a.m) The surface trough will produce isolated showers and thunderstorms to its east this afternoon and evening whilst the ridge builds along the south coast with increasing winds. The upper trough will reach western Queensland tomorrow and then move off the south coast in a weakened mode on Tuesday. Another significant rain situation is expected over most eastern parts of the state over the next few days as the upper trough moves through. Essentially, the surface trough will move west and deepen tomorrow ahead of the upper trough. Showers and thunderstorms will become widespread tomorrow over most of the eastern interior in the moist air east of the surface trough with moderate to heavy falls developing as the thunderstorms turn to rain. These rains should persist into Monday before tappering off by Tuesday. A few showers and thunderstorms will then persist over the interior mid-week near the inland trough. About the northern tropics sultry conditions will continue over the next few days with isolated showers and thunderstorms likely in most areas. There are some indications from recent computer model output that the upper trough may be stronger than currently expected and may develop a low off the Capricornia coast later on Monday. This would have the effect of increasng the winds along the coast to its south and bringing the heavier rains to the coast as well. A clearer picture will be obtained in the next 24 hours. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Met Support 3" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: Possible early season low? Cyclonic vorticity in the trough may lead to a mid level low pressure which, in turn, would be reflected in the predicted surface low. Currently one of the forecast models (ECMRF) is predicting this low to form early next week. One of the other major effects of this upper trough will be to bring widespread rain. High rainfall accumulation for inland QLD is being forecast by all the models I have seen so far. The moist air being fed by the Tasman high will certainly enhance any rainfall. There is only a forecast of a few showers for Adelaide, this seems a bit light on. Just yesterday there was mention of a lot of moisture around as well as instability, there was even mention of widespread shower and thunderstorm activity possible. Anyway I can only hope for the best maybe we will get about our 4th thunderstorm for the year if we are lucky, such a pathetic thunderstorm year even though there has been a lot of rain. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Now, to respond to people's comments/questions: Leslie: I can assure you, that my computer skills (especially graphical skills) are no where remotely near enough to attempt to get something to look remotely like a tornado even if my life depended on it! :-) This was a Cb (IMO) at this stage, but it had just formed, and was only quite small. However soon after this, you can see that the anvil developes further and the rain curtains are better developed. But I think these cells did not last long after this stage (unfortunately!) I couldn't go out and assess damage, as this area is nothing, it's in a big void just south of Brisbane :-( David: Thanks! It'd be an F0 as it didn't hit any structures (that I know of, but I'm 99% sure there are no buildings out there, just bush). Les: Thanks! Agreed. Clyve: Thanks Prof! It reminded me a lot of Paraparap actually, I've often thought that Paraparap developed on a seabreeze convergence line. This cell I believe was definately on that line here! I can't get the report up in any reasonable time (although I have a chase report up). I have exams starting next week, so I've been studying for them, in and out of chasing...yes, really - I really have managed to study! *Nose grows.* But I've added some more captures there for people to look at. -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Paul Mossman" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 17:52:55 +0930 Subject: aus-wx: 2 Waterspouts with Darwin Storm...... I can't say how much I agree with how you really need to be quite adventrous when storm chasing. I know that often other commitments, time and money all hinder our passion for storm chasing. However, you have to be in it to win it so to speak, and sometimes it's the big risks that you take that can really pay off! I know that (and I'm sure many people will agree), if there's a cloud, dust devil, Cb or shower - I'll be there if I can! I've even copped some flak for it in the past, but it's all part of a learning experience, and the more that you can be out there to learn, the better it is IMO. I know that I often look at the days events even more closely if I busted, because I want to try and learn why I busted, and that teaches you for future situations. I can think of some classic examples already...Oct 14 tornado, who would have thought??? We look back and think "ahh yes, that is a great setup" - but what would have people thought if no one chased it? Oct 16-17 midnight severe GC storm, again - who would have thought a severe TS would form right over the Gold Coast? Perhaps no one would have taken any notice of it if it wasn't chased? And of course there's Thursday...the Cb's were not spectacular during the day, they were quite ordinary. Yet again, I don't think people would have expected a non-supercellular tornado to occur. I think that it's absolutely fantastic that more people are getting out there and chasing though! (I'm not encouraging it of course). But I do think that it's great to see all of these reports that have litterally been flooding in over the past 1-2 months, of events that if people were not out there, we would have sat here and probably thought "hmm, yeah well, that event wasn't really that crash hot." Ok - enough rambling! Maybe the owners are hoping it wont happen. I'd hate to leave mine there at present, the water is coming perilously close. Enjoy! ===== Davis: Weather Underground puts personal weather stations on the web! ===== Many web sites offer local weather information. Have you ever wondered where they got the information? It's pretty likely that they're tapping into the Weather Underground. The Weather Underground is one of the top weather web sites. It grew out of the "Blue Skies" project at the University of Michigan. In 1993, Blue Skies brought real-time weather information to K-12 students. The project was a success and led to the development of a weather web service. By 1995, the Weather Underground had become an independent company, separate from the University. The Weather Underground continues to grow and add innovative features to its web site. The latest innovation allows Davis home operated weather station's data to be linked to the world wide web. Our friends at the Weather Underground just announced the Personal Weather Station Project. Through this project, the Weather Underground hopes to build a worldwide network of personal weather stations. Data from participating weather station owners is uploaded to the Weather Underground site. When visitors to the site ask for a local forecast, data from these local weather stations is made available. All you need to participate is a Davis Weather Station and either the Virtual Weather Station, provided by Ambient Software, or Weather Display software, written by Brian Hamilton in New Zealand. Download either application for free from the Weather Underground site: http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/index.asp. Then register your station at http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/usersignup.asp The project has been up for about two weeks now. The Weather Underground says that over 350 personal weather stations have signed up. The list of participating stations (http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/ListStations.asp) spans the globe. Each station is identified by longitude, latitude, type, and owner. The Weather Underground even provides a link to your web site. We encourage you to check out the Weather Underground. Your data will help improve the weather forecasting accuracy in your area. ===== Cool Applications: Remote weather watching ===== This month's cool application takes us to Stuart Island, British Columbia http://morganslanding.bc.ca/. It's a busy sport fishing center in the summer. The rest of the year, it's a very quiet home to a few full time residents. Peter Hollenbeck of Greenbrae, CA has a cottage (with a weather station) there. In between visits, he likes to keep an eye on the weather. The way he does that is pretty neat. Peter has set up his own Stuart Island internet site, http://c46743-a.marin1.sfba.home.com/weather/wl000905.html, to track the weather. He pulls the data from his Weather Wizard III, rain collector, and WeatherLink. His weather setup runs on battery power and is connected to a cell phone. Six times a day, the system automatically powers up the PC. A program gathers snapshot weather data (wind, temperature, rainfall), and then shuts down the PC. During the sixth power-up, the real work gets done. A period-to-date file is created, and an HTML file presenting the weather data is generated. The program then establishes a dial up connection to the internet, uploading the files to Peter's server in California. When this has been accomplished, the Stuart Island PC shuts down and powers off. Peter uses programs written in Python (www.python.org) to make it all happen. In addition he uses AdvancedDialer, a shareware program from www.pysoft.com to initiate the internet connection, and another shareware, ShutDownNOW! from www.dworld.de, to shutdown and power off the PC at the end of each run. The system's not perfect, but it lets Peter keep track of his home on Stuart Island when he's not there. ===== Fun Information: Don't forget to fall back! ===== It's that time again. Those of us in the US who participate in Day Light Savings Time will turn the clocks back an hour this weekend. This means resetting the time on your weather station. If you've forgotten how to do it, follow the instructions in the March 1999 newsletter http://www.davisnet.com/news/e_news_archive/march_99.asp. That's what we plan on doing! ====== Follow-up: We stand corrected. ====== Last month we shared what we'd learned about weather observation times worldwide. In the article, we quoted GMT and UTC as European time standards. According to David Thayer, who once worked for NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology), we were slightly off the mark. David wrote : >The correct name for the time used by The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute is (in English) "Coordinated Universal Time" or CUT (easy to remember!). CUT replaces GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), which is no longer actively used. CUT was formerly known as UT (Universal Time); I guess that was before it was coordinated! Thanks David! We stand corrected. =========================================== That's it for October's E-news! See you next month. -------------------------------- Jane ONeill - Melbourne cadence at stormchasers.au.com Melbourne Storm Chasers http://www.stormchasers.au.com ASWA - Victoria http://www.severeweather.asn.au -------------------------------- +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
