At 7:50, the wind had started, the lightning was getting close, the thunder was quite loud, with no quiet breaks, and sporadic spots of rain were falling. By 8pm, the storm was starting to move overhead, lightning was flashing nearly continuously in every direction, and for the next 20 minutes, we were subjected to a very spectacular display, with periods of torrential rain. The were many close GC hits, including one that I think hit a eucalyptus tree right next to the house - just about jumped through the roof when that one hit - no gap between the brilliant flash and the tremendous crash. There were many other close CG strikes within a 3-400 metres of the house - very loud crashes within a second or so of the flash - I saw several hit in the park adjoining the house, and there were many more spectacular CC complex zig-zag bolts, some filling much of the sky visible from the doorway. There were few moments darkness between the frequent flashes. By 8:30pm the storm had moved out over the sea, but was still putting on a good show. The structure of the Gold Coast supercell (have only seen bits and pieces of radar, but it sure looked convincing visually) was just awesome, with boiling updrafts punching up into a saucer shaped anvil, with a large overshoot which lasted (varying in height, but always quite visible) over half an hour - probably longer, but i had to return home. The lightning, as Carl has already mentioned, was very frequent with at least 1 flash a second, with more intense periods of several flashes a second every now and then. Some excellent crawlers and cloud to air strikes were seen too. The the cell(s?) NW of this storm began to liven up, with frequent lightning revealing some excellent and very large mammatus for almost its entire life span! This activity moved offshore, and i again returned home to see what else was happening. More storms began developing west of Brisbane, and before long the lightning in that direction had increased to a flash every 3-4 seconds. After a bit of prodding from the guys in IRC, i ventured back out and headed for a line which had developed. The lightning had now increased further to a flash every 1-2 seconds, and Cg's popping out all over the show! I sat at a couple of lookouts between Strathpine and Daybora (spelling?) watching frequent and intense Cg's an sheet lightning - at times the Cg rate was 1 every 3-4 seconds, with the anvil crawlers/sheet lightning on top of that! I decided to start heading back to Redcliffe - and wholy snappers did the sky explode on the way, with Cg's striking all around me, and heavy rain pounding down. I again stopped at several lookouts on the way, mainly because i was a little concerned about the car being struck by lightning. I was in an old Toyota Landcruiser with metal pedals - and i didn't have any shoes on (doh). Anyway, i eventually made it to the beach on the northern side of Redcliffe, sat back and watched the Cg's and brilliant anvil cralwers around me. The lightning rate was still around 1 per second, of course with more intense periods of sometimes 2 or 3 strikes of flashes a second. Also, with the development of many other cells from the NW right around to the south, it was almost impossible to count the flashes per second from all cells combined - it was that frequent! I also experienced an extremely bizare series of flashes on the NW horizon after a lightning strike - i think it was a transformer or something exploding, but the thing is all the flashes (4-5 of them) were different colours! green, orange, white! all flashes were around half a second apart. With any luck tomorrow will fire as well - although the timing of the change makes it iffy - fingers crossed!! +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Ben Quinn" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: Gold Coast Storm Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 01:40:00 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi again, Jason Rainforest managed to get a couple of pics of this storm as it was developing around sunset http://bsch.simplenet.com/ben/gc01.jpg http://bsch.simplenet.com/ben/gc02.jpg Soon after those shots were taken it exploded on radar and visually. Incredible !! The storms that smashed through my area last night from 7pm, has managed to shift a 5000 gallon water tank 500 metres from where it was, smashing a line of trees and ending up in my neighbours property which is below us. A Large tree has been snapped off about 2 metres above the ground as well. We have some minor tree damage, but most of ours are recent plantings. I haven't been out to check the local streets for any other damage. I estimate the gusts to around 60 knots. We had water enter our front (N facing) rooms forced in through sliding doors, and some managed to get in from the top of a bedroom window. We had 15mm in about 10 mins with rain coming in horizontally from the NW. Based on the erosion and scouring, I'd say a lot more rain actually fell but flew over the top of my gauge - more like 30mm fell. Then came the lightning - amazing strobing lightning for hours as the storms moved out over the coast and also up to the border ranges and the Gold Coast. I watched and photographed till about 10pm when it got a bit far away, then more storms developed after midnight just N of me. Powerful Cgs and anvil crawlers were occurring multiple times every second for another couple of hours !! I couldn't resist taking more pics as the lightning was much closer this time, but also couldn't get to sleep until about 2.30am. I have three rolls of film to pick up today from Wednesday's storm and another 2 rolls to put in from last nights events. cheers, Michael ============================================================= Michael Bath mailto:mbath at ozemail.com.au McLeans Ridges http://australiasevereweather.com/ NE NSW Australia http://www.lightningphotography.com/ ASWA Secretary http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ ============================================================= +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: Blair Trewin Subject: Re: Radar, was Re: aus-wx: Rain To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 10:23:23 +1100 (EST) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.5 PL2] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com > > A press release on the new radar has appeared on the Bureau website at > http://www.bom.gov.au/announcements/media_releases/ho/001023.shtml, > though it gives less information in 8 paragraphs than Blair did in one > sentence. Hi All

After a hot day 29.7C, I could see some good CC's to our west around dusk.  Around 8pm the storm arrived with gusty winds, followed by heavy rain (28mm) and lighning.  My brother was on his way home from uni, and encounted hail at Nerang, where he seeked shelter under a bridge, hail was about marble size.  So far this month 132mm, 4 storms, 4 days =/>30.0C, 12 raindays.  Let's hope there is more storms like these.

cheers

As it turned out, I found a great position and everything developed more of less within 15km of me. I'll have a full report up on my site soon. www.qldstorms.com I left for Beaudesert around 3.30pm with very nice large cu and low Cb towers developing to the south and moving east. I was hoping for some development to propagate west of these. Traffic was shocking on the way, but it didn't matter because there wasn't too much happening. From Beaudesert I saw the eastward moving cells including one that I suspected was off the coast which had a very nice bulge and backsheared anvil. Spying some very weak, fibrous pieces of anvil way to the south, I decided to go south, through Kerry and down to Darlington. It was obvious that there had been a storm there just previously, with wet roads and quite a lot of surface water. Because I'd never been there before, I didn't realise that storm vantage points were almost non existent with all the hills/mountains on either side. I went back towards Beaudesert, stopped and rang up Anthony, asking him about the weak anvils I could see to the south, which by now had moved quite a bit closer. He rang me back a short time later just as a large updraught shot through the weak anvil and became pink on the latest radar image. Once again I headed south, this time back to Kerry where I waited, as numerous new updraughts boiled over the fibrous anvil. A new cumuli anvil had begun to form, and static was increasing on the radio. Over the next hour or so I watched this now severe thunderstorm as it produced heaps of intercloud lightning and the occasional CG (that I could see as Mt Tamborine was in the way). Also, I started to notice increased towering cumuli activity to the south, SW and W which in no time had become strong anvils. Lightning became continuous, flashing from the possible severe cell over the Gold Coast to the SE all the way around to the west and above me. Again from my position it was mostly intercloud and sheet lightning with infrequent CG's. With a line of hills to my SW it took me by surprise when the shelf cloud appeared - and it was huge! CGs became much more frequent and the NE sky was becoming filled with low cloud that was feeding into the storms. I then flew towards Beaudesert, sometimes stopping ahead of the storms for more videoing. One on of these occasions a CG hit within 100m of me just as the wind became gale force. I also could hear the rain/hail in the background coming towards me - as the big drops of rain started falling I quickly got back in the car. In the 10km or so back to Beaudesert, numerous CGs hit very close to the car, and leaves, twigs and small branches flew in front of me. It was quite a relief to make it back to Beaudesert! From there I shot more footage of the fantastic lightning and shelf cloud. Outflow winds at that stage were constant at 20kn from the south. I then rang Anthony who of course was at Beaudesert too and then we met up, deciding to go NE to follow the storms. The lightning continued with some CGs before we reached Canungra but seemed to be easing off a little. From there it was to the Gold Coast, then onto the M1 back home by 9.30pm. Of course I checked radar/satpics and lightning tracker and was amazed to see more fantastic looking storms all over the place, including some that were moving towards Brisbane and areas north of there. Despite a huge headache, I went back out and watched the storms from Mt Gravatt. Another great lightshow - with CC's, CG's and the odd anvil crawler. Low cloud started to move in so I headed home at about midnight. There was more lightning to the south again at Beaudesert from another line of storms, but I'd had enough for one night. So yeah...a fantastic night of storms for me! I just got some photos back of yesterday's and Wednesday's storms which have some nice structure shots. (I'll scan these soon) Unfortunately the lightning shots are in the new film in the camera - hope they're good ones! You'll have to wait until after the next storms to see them! I took over 90mins of video too which I'm still yet to go through - should have the odd big of good footage :-) Chase distance: 272 km. Continuing the newbie theme....
Can someone offer insight on how to determine instability in the upper/mid levels. What maps would you look at and what are the key points that would indicate that there is instability in the upper/mid levels. Is it a combination of winds, RH, etc or is it something complety different....?

This has been brought by a very cold and unstable sw airstream behind the front that moved through today.Temp is only 9C atm. Looks like a few more showers on the way. Got to run, still packing, moving tomorrow (clear dammit). Unfortunately we had a pre frontal NW/W wind change around 2pm which has taken away all mositure, thus ensuring that the frontal edge is dry and thunderless.Up until 2pm we had a lovely NE seabreeze. Curse those prefrontal NW winds, they are the bane of southern coastal NSW. Hi Bradley,

Welcome to the list.

The following links should get you started in relation to instability in the mid-upper levels - they certainly helped me ...

Continuing the newbie theme....
Can someone offer insight on how to determine instability in the upper/mid levels. What maps would you look at and what are the key points that would indicate that there is instability in the upper/mid levels. Is it a combination of winds, RH, etc or is it something complety different....?

cheers
newbie
