Hey all,

I were looking about and were told of a site by someone where you can get your own domain name for free, and I got to thinking about creating a Thunder Down Under site, for reports from the TDU chases.

This could include chases, possible bios on the participants, etc. as well as be updated every year with the new chase.

What are peoples thoughts on this.

Paul.

Hi all

There appears to be a very interesting storm to the NW of Brisbane at the moment. At around 0400Z, it split off from a cell moving in from the WNW, and began to move to the ENE, the only cell in the area to do so. At the same time, it rapidly intensified on radar, and the right-mover died away slightly. Since then, it has been red on radar on and off for an hour and is continuing to move towards the Sunshine Coast. There is a Severe Thunderstorm Warning out on it, and it looks like a probable supercell to me, but then again, I am 1000km away and am basing this only on observations via the computer. Anthony Cornelius is out chasing in the area but is too far away to reach this particular storm.

This storm was perhaps 200 kilometres from me, maybe more but the clear air in the west stream here has given excellent visibility. The storm has weakened somewhat now, and looks a bit congesty for my liking., but has edged closer, perhaps Batemans Bay / Moruya. There must be a S wind change working its way up the coast to trigger this storm. Looks like they will collapse before reaching the metro area. Hopefully brining some general rain. A few cells are giving the Sunshine Coast a drop of rain as well. Interestingly, the colour weather radar on Channel 10 had a lot more green in it than the BoM radar. I would hazard a guess that what was light blue on the BoM radar was shown as green on the image provided by Channel 10 ???? Some of the cells were photogenic during development. The local chasers should return with some good happy snaps. Didn't know how close until I got home at lunch time and found out from the Electricity boys whom I called that the transformer on the pole directly in front of my house (3 metres away) more than likely took the strike. Blowing the fuses on the 22,000 volt lines. Can't get much closer than that! Most annoyed that my new toy (WM-918) had died. Finally got it to reset but can't get any readings from the outside temp/humidity sensor which isn't far from this pole. (front of my house). Approx 16mm fell in about 15 minutes at a guess from my rain gauge. Had 10mm in it this morning and has now just partially over flowed, approx 26mm. Got a new modem, but have to wait for insurance on the other stuff. Apparently nothing showed on radar or lightning tracker for here. As you can imagine it was a pretty savage strike, with very heavy rain that followed. There was no rumbling etc to say a strike may happen. One bolt, heavy rain that's it! All over red rover. 20mm I think in 10-15 minutes. Storm wise, Sydney has been a little better off than you over the past few years but I would no say absolutely fantastic.... My thoughts are that to get storms, you have to have the time to chase them and observe them where they occur. Since I have done this, I have found that the quality of the storms and thence the storm chasing has improved immensely. And I think that others would agree to this. I hope people on the list and otherwise are not thinking that Sydney has had all the action as it certainly hasn't. However, if you talk other parts of NSW - yes it has been quite good. I have now resigned to the fact that I have to be willing to take days of work when the action occurs and that I will certainly do. Unfortunately, tomorrow is not the day I can take the day off as I have a few extremely important things to do, but there will be events to chase in the near future. So the message is, you simply don't wait until the storms come to you - waste of time - or you will be waiting and hoping. You have to go out and seek them if you are physically able to and if you have a good knowledge of storm structure. There are some who would like to go but would like to tag along. You need to team up with someone with a similar character and tolerance as yourself and chase with them. If you feel the need to tag along with another car, then plan ahead to do so and find out the necessary arrangements so that you can match up especially on weekends. Cheers. certain and the shear is right for supercells. This weekend looked OK about two days ago, but is now shaping to be SE winds along the coast. The storm down near Bega / Eden looked very impressive about 3.30pm, but was very isolated on the lightning tracker, unlike the action up Michael Bath's way where the lightning did not leave much gaps along 200km of coastline.
