The best segment of that axis might be N of the Spencer Gulf. The N end of the axis has good moisture and some flow and decreasing lapse rates. (2) W QLD: A dryline setup from SW of Longreach (QLD) N to the Gulf of Carpentaria has a chance of initiating storms in those areas that will manage to see sun through the cloud band. The good low-level moisture is somewhat offset by only moderate flow in the general Longreach area and less-than-moderate flow as you go N. An easterly component to the surface wind might help here to increase the deep layer shear. Moderate lapse rates are also preferable at the southern end of the dryline-to-be. Looks like we are also getting our first proper wrap around rain band around the more intense than expected low near Adelaide. Gales are even possible on Metro Waters now. Had about 25mm here in Adelaide. I am surprised no flood warnings have been issued considering Mt Bold is already at 99% capacity, most likely meaning some water should be released. I am adding maps and data of all individual tropical cyclones I have data for as time permits. You can also make comparisons between cyclones analysed by the Bureau of Meteorology and the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre, a global warning agency. For all the seasonal maps, try here: http://australiasevereweather.com/cyclones/history.htm For more detailed statistics including season start and end dates, check the info here: http://australiasevereweather.com/cyclones/stats.htm This section is having additional information added often. It has been quite mild this morning, the northerly providing a bit of warmth despite the cloud. Now for the crystal ball. Things are certanly looking pretty interesting over the SE in the coming days. The low is getting wound up near Kangaroo Island and is moving SE towards Victoria, sweeeet. The associated trough is nice, and with some impressive dew points around (well the best here for ages) we could see a bit of storm activity develop. The area I have my eye on is behind the rainband. The latest sat pic shows that some cells appear to be going up in NW Victoria, oh yeah baby. Some nice echoes on radar as well, pink. Oh and lighning tracker has started to pick up strikes near the bordertown cell. Some impressive rainfall totals have already occurred in SA and with the cloud wrapping around the low further high rainfalls are possible in SE SA, and Vic. Hell looking at the models, Eastern Australia will be very wet in the next week. Hopefully, unlike the last system, this one will affect us up North as the immediate Townsville region is not doing so well rainfall wise over the past few months( 5.9mm last 114 days) DF00Q01 BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY Queensland Region Brisbane Office QUEENSLAND WEATHER FORECAST Issued at 11:35am on Wednesday the 18th of October 2000 IDF06Q00 WARNING SUMMARY No warnings. STATE FORECAST for the rest of Wednesday and Thursday Isolated showers along the east coast and on Cape York Peninsula with moderate to fresh SE winds. Isolated showers or thunderstorms around the Gulf country. Cloudy over most of the interior of the State with patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms with some moderate to heavy falls developing overnight Thursday about the north-west of the State. Moderate NE to N winds inland. IDF20Q00 EXTENDED OUTLOOK Indications are that some reasonable rains will occur over most areas of the State over the next 4 to 5 days. An upper trough will amplify into central Australia during Thursday and Friday and be near the western border on Saturday. This trough will interact with the cloud band over the interior and will induce some moderate to heavy falls of rain over the north-west of the State during Friday. At the surface the ridge from the high near New Zealand will begin to weaken resulting an easing of the winds over the tropics during the weekend and the early part of next week. The upper trough will then move across the State during Saturday and Sunday but in a weakening mode. Consequently, while the rains will not be as heavy some reasonable rains will still occur over the eastern tropics and also over the adjacent sub-tropics. The trough will clear the coast early Monday. A new upper trough will enter the south-west on Monday and will again increase the cloud over this area and produce some rain. This band of cloud and rain will then move across the south-east on Tuesday before clearing the coast overnight Tuesday. Accompanying this system will a surface front which will also move off the coast late Tuesday. In the wake of this front drier SW/SE winds will develop over southern and western areas of the State. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [210.8.232.4] From: "Patrick Tobin" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Canberra Thunder Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 04:01:31 GMT X-OriginalArrivalTime: 18 Oct 2000 04:01:31.0831 (UTC) FILETIME=[19706C70:01C038B8] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com 3pm Continuous moderate rain now for last few hours with tendency to increase in intensity. Also to prove cyclones can occur in the Central >Indian Ocean anytime check out Carl Smiths August Cyclone Summary where a >disturbance developed in that area. That was absolutely amazing. The BoM issues the daily 'Cyclone Outlook Indian Ocean' all year. I think this reflects the fact that there is a possibility of a cyclone in the CIO at any time of the year. Cyclones are less likely off WA as the dry continental conditions during the winter-spring inhibit it by streaming (relatively) cooler dry air into the Timor Sea as the Highs traverse the S of the continent. Any time from mid to late October on could see the resumption of the WA Outlooks, as conditions become more favourable for WA. Also, the August Cyclone Summary was actually written by Gary Padgett in the US although I do contribute to it during our cyclone season. Hey All Today in Melbourne it has been cloudy with just a little bit of rain. I think the wall cloud description relates to the Northern hemisphere, not Southern. For us, you would expect wall clouds to be located on N or NW side of a supercell storm. Impressive photo. John. >snip Hi all What do people think about this? http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Weather/WallCloud/cloud.html [Bloody hell, not another boring website!] This is a collection of data that a friend of mine received, whose sister works in the Severe Weather section of the Bureau in Adelaide, and so I've just put in on the web, ie none of the analysis is mine. This includes 2 separate wall cloud(?) observations, one on 3rd August, 1998 and the other on 13th August 2000. I've tentatively described these as wall clouds because I want people to check out the MSLs that I've put on the page, and the soundings, which came with the photos. As I've mentioned earlier, I'm all at sea when it comes to recognising storm features (eg perhaps that wasn't a funnel in my photos which I posted yesterday), but surely under these sorts of synoptic conditions you wouldn't expect to see wall clouds. Nearly all of our wet weather comes in from the Northwest, so we get all excited when there is a cyclone off the Kimberley, or a trough, such as what has just occured, develops in W.A., which sometimes brings a rainband with it. Hi Clyve, everyone

I find the upper level forecasts quite interesting at the moment - AVN has a decent upper trough amplifying into NE WA and the NT over the next few days, with 300mb temps forecast to get as low as around -31 in Darwin - and of course colder further south.  I'm not sure what the norm is up there, but that sounds awfully cold to me.

I have been watching the soundings closely with this system, and the shear has been excellent - on top of the directional shear, Melbourne had a 50 knot low level jet at 900mb on this mornings sounding!
