According to the stats, Ipswich official record Max for September is 36.4. I reckon we must have given it a good shake today. (Thank god for the pool, water temp 25C). Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, Wow - it was a fair scorcher to the west of Brissy today! At my place (bayside suburbs), I recorded a max of 29.9C (the elusive 30C is still yet to arrive!!!) The seabreeze came through around 11ish if my memory serves me correctly, and dropped the temps to hover around the low 28's. When I left to visit my parents at the farm just after midday, it was 27.1C. As I headed west, the temperature increased dramatically along the Ipswich Motorway, peaking at 34.8C near the 'hell merge' - it hovered around 34-35C along the Cunningham too, but near Rosewood the mercury (well, LCD screen...) rose again to 37.0C at Rosewood. It was 38.6C at Grandchester and at the farm, it was a scorching 40.3C when I arrived - 40.7C when I left! As JW said, it was like a furnace, we had NW'lies with gusts to gale force, the dust was shocking. Since it was so dry, each gale gust brough along a wall dust, you had to close your eyes as it went through. The only interesting thing was that little dust devils/dust vorticies (not sure if these could be classified as true dust devils?) formed on the gale gusts - you could see them spin up for 5-10 seconds ahead of the gusts. I didn't stay as long as I had originally planned - I left shortly after and decided to potter around in a nice A/C car (first time I had the A/C on full permanently while driving!) It was again just over 38C at Laidley - as I pottered around to see if anything would develop. I decided to slowly head to Toowoomba and have a look around (as I had never really drove and had a look around before), sited a few advantage spots for the future too! At Withcott, I got spits of rain on my windscreen (quite impressive for temps still over 36C and DP's below 10C!) And watched as CJ's were preciptating virga on the ranges. I also watched a small CJ rain itself a base - quite interesting! Lots of ACCAS and As to the west of Toowoomba and a few CJ's - it really wanted to do something, but was too dry. But if we just had a NE'ly - it would have been awesome! I had a min of 21.3C here last night - was quite warm and muggy with the DP hovering around 19-20C (from the seabreeze). I think today concludes our run of marginal storm possibility days. Although today might hold a better chance then yesterday, just a few interesting notes are the strengtehning jet over us - due to 500-300mb trough encroaching our area. Unfortunately, it looks like the winds will generally have the dreaded westerly component for most of the day - at least, just inland of us they will and that's where it's most needed. Oh well - will just have to sit here and drool at NSW and Vic wx a bit longer :) -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "James Chambers" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: Who Turned On The Heat? Close to sunset yesterday some low topped, high based congestus (CJ) was seen close to my SW and W but these only dropped virga. I was hoping for lightning but it wasn't to be. My minimum temp was 20.0C (felt much warmer than that) and now at 8.40pm its 26.1C. It did reach 27.4C at 8am before altocumulus began to dominate. I used to see it during every thunderstorm when I lived on a farm near Tyers in Gippsland - very seldom since as I have always lived in brightly lit cities. St Elmo's fire always extends upwards from objects connected to the ground. It appears as a bluish light that varies in brightness and length and can look just like a kind of cold fire. It stretches upwards suddenly when a particularly strongly charged cloud passes over and sometimes we used to see what we called leaders extending downwards from the cloud. When they met, there was a flash of lightning along the same path. When the lightning flash went off all of the St Elmo's fires in the district would instantly vanish. Then, a moment later they would reappear and start reaching for the clouds as before. We had a dunny with no door about 30 metres from the house and I used to get into trouble as a kid for spending an hour down there every time there was a thunderstorm because I used to love watching the St Elmo's fire and the lightning. However I do remember seeing something similar to your "bright patch" during a daytime thunderstorm in the Little Desert somewhere south of Kaniva. The bright patch appeared at the base of the heavy black cloud for about 3 or 4 seconds, vanished for about 2 seconds, and then a brilliant CG hit came down from the same point in the cloud to hit a hilltop about 500 metres away. About a second and a half later there was a tremendous thunderclap - a real ripper. The bright patch did not look at all like St Elmo's fire. A wind gust of 39kmh from the SW at 10pm last night. Still hovering round the 5mps rate as it has done all night. Even had a wind chill here at 8.40am this morning of zero. Overnight rain a whopping half millimetre. Is the conversion rate from Metres per second to Kilometres per hour 3.6? This morning at Corinella, we had about seven separate hail showers over a 3 hour period. Also noted quite a lot (bloody heaps actually) of straight line wind damage. There's been numerous reports of ice falling from the sky for no reason. One explanation has been suggested to be ice falling off planes, this has actually been suggested the chase in a few times as witnesses had reported planes in the area at the time of the ice fall. These falls generally seem to be around 0.5 to 1kg in weight. There's also some thunderstorms that throw very large hail out of the top of the storm! This is from extremely strong updrafts, and they can fall severa km from the storm under clear skies. I think Chase Day has a storm like this (can't give the URL...NS decided to delete my bookmarks a couple of days ago). But this report actualls pails into insignificance compared to other reports that are listed in a book called "Weird Weather" by Paul Simons. Two reports in particular, one lists a block of ice falling from the sky near Long Beach California, weighing 75kg!!! In fact, many large blocks of ice fell, the total combined weight for all of the ice was one tonne! The largest block of ice ever reported, was actualy 6m long! It was after a thunderstorm in the mid-1800's - it was transparant/crystalline. It was reported as it fell after one of the loudest cracks of thunder. However, I remain skeptical of this report, as I've got lots of reports of blocks of ice several metres long in SE QLD in the 1920's to 1950's - but all were listed as "clumps" - ie, hail fused together which certainly could happen if a lot of large hail fell followed by some heavy rain!
