Next time you are in the area check out Bilgola Headland. You drive further north from Newport and after the Bilgola Bends, there is a round about, then after another 200 metres or so, turn to the right. The corner is marked by one of those brown coloured tourist signs. Drive straight up the road until it makes a sharp turn to the right. At this point you should see a small parking area directly ahead and beyond that is the best place around here for watching lightning at night. We were following the New Endeavour down the coast at about 10 am Saturday, Hopefully our photos also feature the storm cloud as a backdrop. I was living in Canberra at the time, and the first day over 25 for the spring was not until mid-November, the first day over 30 until January. I was reading the Victorian 'Monthly Weather Review' for September 1992 recently; which says that during the course of the month there were only three Victorian rivers for which flood warnings were not issued - the Cann and Genoa in far east Gippsland and the Maribyrnong in metropolitan Melbourne. Whilst there is nothing particularly unusual about spring flooding in the rivers of north-east Victoria (and there was far, far worse in 1993 and 1998 than anything seen yet this year), a few other rivers are popping up in the warnings for the first time in a long time (although the flood warning issued for the Murrumbidgee at Wagga was based on a gauge at Tarcutta that turned out to be bodgy, and has been withdrawn). The Yarra at Heidelberg is also the highest I've seen it in the two years I've been living in the area, although it is well short of flood level there. There was also a lot of surface water on paddocks between Melbourne and Bendigo on the weekend, suggesting that the ground is pretty saturated and that, if we were to get a major single rain event (something we haven't really seen in this sequence, last Thursday being the closest), there could be some quite significant flooding. Hi Weather enthusiasts.
Sometimes you can be in the right place at the right time for observing severe weather. I arrived with my family at Bright in N.E.Victoria on Thursday to spend some time playing in the snow , our favourite location is Mt Buffalo which is normally ideal with its large plateau and good road access. We arrived on the Mountain early on Friday 8th Sep:, to say it had rained at Bright overnight was an understatement, at our unit the owner registered 40mm to 0900hrs on 8th Sep. But the best was yet to come, we drove to the Mt Buffalo Park entrance to be greeted with water flowing everywhere. Water was running off nearby paddocks, all the streams were full and a magnificent huge cascade of water was thundering off the side of the Buffalo plateau in the distance. The weather comment on the local station that morning was a report of  88mm to 0900 at I think Mt Buffalo Chalet. When we left Bright the snow depth was reported as 40cm at Cresta, so we hoped for at least a clearance of the rain. NO WAY the rain poured down all the way up the mountain ,there were wonderful  raging waterfalls everywhere along the roadway. Arriving at the crest near to the top the road levels out onto the Buffalo Platue,Where's the snow?, only patches!, The small creeks were large rivers and the rain still poured. Moving on to Crestasnow resort, we arrived in what i could only describe as a remarkable copious amounts of drizzle . There was snow here but on closer inspection it felt like that crushed ice drink stuff just small crystals . The air temp was showing 2.5c the wind blowing at about 30knots or so.
No wonder there was so much water running off the mountain, almost the entire winter stock of snow was melting before our eyes, brown soggy patches were showing up everywhere, and large lumps of snow was breaking away from the sides of the local stream and flowing away.We stayed about two hours and attempted the  toboggan run ,Frozen and wet through we escaped back to our car ,then hid under a veranda to change into dry clothing as the water cascaded off the building roofs and eyes of disappointed skiers peered out of the near by reception centre and watched the snow disappear down the creeks . We drove away , once away from the groomed skier area the amount of snow that had disappeared was remarkable , we  escaped off the mountain and watched the incredible spectacle of nature reabsorbing the winter and sending down the rivers in magnificent torrents of white, fantastic stuff!. regards Clyve Herbert.

First noticed it from 11am over the top of a blaze near myall lakes, and it continued to form/collapse and reform till 4pm producing some odd shaped clouds that were even horizontal at times. Took about 10 pics. At its largest stages i would say that it would have been caple of at least producing a light shower and i was hanging for it to make it to a pyrocumulonimbus (if there is such a thing) but it never made it close and i yelled profanity at it:).. It was also interesting that none of the other fires in the area created one as they looked to have the same intencity.. In Sydney, 21C strong westerlies and partly cloudy, stop hogging the storms down there!, Rune _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. As the article implies, it's unlikely that anything reaching Perth would be much above a Category 2 by the time it got there - but a Category 2 could still have a severe impact on a relatively unprepared urban area. The cascade off the side of Mt.Buffalo may have been Eurobin Falls. If it was, then yes it is a magnificent site to see. Very pretty country. Pity it was a no-goer for you. We really need more water down here............ Grin.

Subject: aus-wx: Mt Buffalo Deluge.

The watch was already extended down to Geraldton even though it was well to the north of Exmouth, being a cat 5 and moving quite fast for that latitude it posed a serious threat to Perth and the SW of the state had it managed to get around the NW cape. Barry said Perth was only 6 hours away from being on a watch as the cyclone was moving SSW and trying to make its way off the upper west coast, but then it turned due south and it was then apparent it was going to curve too early and hit the NW cape region instead of staying out to sea Jacob > >I believe Perth was 6 hours away from being put on a cyclone watch >for Vance when the system turned southwards. > >As the article implies, it's unlikely that anything reaching Perth >would be much above a Category 2 by the time it got there - but a >Category 2 could still have a severe impact on a relatively unprepared >urban area. > >Blair Trewin > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ > To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com > with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your > message. > -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "bussie" To: "weather list" Subject: aus-wx: That word again Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 18:35:31 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Albury's Prime TV local news. They were very strong. Also that day Clifton Springs was hit by a hailstorm that lasted 5-10 minutes. Hail was very small .5 cm but it still hurt. Rain was very hard and visibility was very low. I have a nice view of Geelong from my house, and Geelong had disappeared due to the amount of rain falling. You could see the wall of rain and hail coming across the bay. Rain fall for the day was 4.5mm The next thing I heard was the hail hitting the roofs of the houses just down the road. All day the sky had looked like it would rain and when it did a very large CB let it rip (while I was helping dad build a pergola) Anyway I will see the Melbourne ASWA members on Saturday. Both EC and GASP predict a high to develop behind the change somewhere over the south-east. This will mean onshore winds further north and, combined with the upper trough, could lead to some unsettled weather, although it looks more likely to be north of Sydney, probably the north-east of NSW. If nothing else, it looks like it might be a good thunderstorm situation for the north-east inland in the afternoon. If I were in the BoM I wouldn't be so confident about fine weather for all of Friday although I guess it still looks like it'll be ok for the opening ceremony at night. - Paul G. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Its best to post what you want to say in 1 email with a few sentences rather then do several emails in 1 day with only 1 line in each one. The same when replying to a post, if you're just going to reply with a "thanks" or something like that, its best to email to the person who sent it and not the whole list. Thanks.
