Details later as they come to hand. No injuries. > > Re the tornado at Hokitika, no one was on hand to record it but it seemed that it was quite vicious. Squally thunderstorms had plagued the region for most of the afternoon with heavy rain then about 3:45pm local time the twister hit in one such squall. It started off as a waterspout and moved up the mouth of the Hokitika River and into the town then back into the river again before blowing itself out. Apparently it was very short lived only about 5 or so minutes but very quick and damaging in it's path of destruction (posb F2 ?) The strength of it overturned a 13 tonne milk tanker and trailer on it's side and damaged alot of buildings and equipment in it's path. A very heavy hail shower followed. I must praise the media who never used the prefix - *mini* There was also severe thunderstorm activity in the Wellington region that evening with one lightning recorder recording 414 hits in one hour between 6pm and 7pm. There was flooding in parts of Lower Hutt city. I've been a viewer of this list for quite some time now, but have never got around to contributing. My name is Duncan Treloar, and I have a interest in general weather and all that goes with it. Especially the weather in and around Alice Springs, as this is where I have lived for the last 3 years after moving up from Adelaide. Most interesting are any messages posted by Blair Trewin - I would love to have that guy's job! It didn't feel like 35 Degrees up here earlier in the week - I was quite suprised to see that it reached this temp. I was in town when it snowed on Ayres Rock about 2-3 years ago - tourists who were up the top at the time said it definetely snowed, but didn't stick. This was the only time locals could ever remember it snowing on the Rock. There was a small article in the local Murdoch Rag 'The Centralian Advocate' at the time. Still lots of water lying around from the last big rains at Easter. Suprising, as we haven't had any rain since. I wish I was back in Adelaide at the moment - sounds like a good wet winter down there, instead of boring cold no rain winter.
Cheers.

Definately the biggest one all year. The radar only shows yellow on what looks like a convective cloud on the end of a shower period. I watched as the rainfall gauge knocked up 15mm or over in a matter of minutes, amazing. Heaps of local flooding, garden under and inch of water, roads outside flooding, gutters that never overflow flowing. Not sure if this shower reached the northern suburbs though. Like to hear from more people in Adelaide about the weather conditions here. This torrential shower occurred just after 5:00am. Wouldn't expect to see this in a situation like this more likely with a thunderstorm and also not the passing of a weak front. Rainfall rate must have been atleast 50mm/hr or more. There is also a flash flood advce The Onkaparinga River, reaching levels not seen since 1992 but not as high as 1992. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Just goes to show you how patchy all this stuff is, at St Peters [~5km north of Glenside] I only got half of what you recorded. Some good solid showers but nothing exceptional. This September is already feeling like the very wet month of September 1992, when Adelaide recorded 150mm for the month [the wettest month of a near record wet year] and the Torrens River was a torrent, not it's usual trickle. The afternoon was hazy after the cloud band cleared rapidly. The indications were for a good chance of thunderstorms and with sufficient moisture, and good moisture profile within the atmosphere, it was looking good. Well you couldn't see anything and this worried me until around Sunset when I could see cumulus congestus developing. Then the satpics began to indicate a thunderstorm line around the Central West. I knew once they took hold, the storms would move rapidly. The first storm moved in around 8:30pm but gradually weakened as it moved east but again developed towards the coast. The next storm approached closer to 9:30pm - 10pm. This was the one I took a more interest in. It was moving from the NW. But as I got to be in a better viewing position relative to the storm, low cloud fed in. This puzzled me. But then it became apparent that the low cloud was feeding into the storm itself. The wind observed also was inflow into the storm from the NW. The storm and low cloud quickly moved to the SE and I could then see the cloud top with no back sheared anvil illuminated by the in-cloud lightning. This storm dumped some very heavy rain in some suburbs even within kilometres of Schofields. As Matt Smith mentioned of a separate observation, there was a nice green slow that lasted several seconds after a CG lightning bolt. All in all, a nice night's observation of storms. Subject: aus-wx: G'day Folks

Cheers.

This one was rather close to my Brother's property, and he nearly was ordered to evacuate. Part of the problem here was that the local Council has a few easements in the area. There has been no systematic clearing over the last few years, so the easements are full of dead trees, long grass and needle nose pine leaves. Which all provides a very heavy fuel load. Grandchester is approx 80 km west of Brisbane (I think). It is a more heavily developed agriculture area. Cattle and market garden type stuff. Not as much fuel lying around, but the area is bone dry. Under normal conditions the atmosphere acts an insulator preventing electricity from flashing over between powerlines. However, flames ionise the air, dramatically lowering the insulation properties, and the electricity can flash over. A double circuit outage, due to fire, has never been considered as a credible event. (I cannot recall it happening in QLD. Plenty of single events, but never a double outage.) I (stupidly) chose today to be the day to go into the city to get some stuff done which I've been putting off for some time. "Should I take my camera?" I said to myself, to which I replied "Nah, I'll be back home in time before the action starts". And inevitably, things went longer than expected in town, which I should've anticipated. At around 12-1pm there were some very nice cumulus congestus towers nestled between the building towers of the city, which would've made for some great shots. But no bloody camera! A moderate shower went through at around 1:30pm perhaps reaching 20-40mm/hr. Then while I was in a shop around 2pm, a stronger shower hit, perhaps getting to the mid 40-100mm/hr rate, with graupel as well. Also there were about 2 loud cracks of thunder. I immediately headed home by train and I thought I saw a CC bolt in a storm to the northeast of the city, but perhaps it was just a reflection in the window. By the time I got home 4:45pm (aarrghhhhh) things had all passed. Much cursing was done! Cheers -- Robert A. At about 5.30pm a storm crossed to the SE of here and I have videoed (and I hope it's worked out) two rainbows side by side. How common is that? At about 7pm another storm crossed here with almost instant cloud to ground lightning and thunder (was close). One strike seemed to break up at the top as if it was pixels on a computer screen, almost sparks. At the top of the leader I think it's called. Where it comes from the cloud. Is this common too? They were very close strikes. Water laying everywhere. What a water logged NE Victoria we have. Flood warnings for nearly every river/stream in the North East and after this lot they will probably rise more overnight. At a guess I'd say bigger releases from the Hume weir will follow. I watched today as they seemed to get, from where I was watching, some very heavy falls towards the mountains which will eventually end up in the Dartmouth and Hume weirs, and surrounding rivers. Ovens river etc. Bussy (NE Victoria) +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2000 21:34:20 +1000 From: MSC - Jane ONeill X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Melbourne Radar 2.45pm some RED ! The weather has started off very well this month, that is true (already over month's average in Kent Town), but it looks like it will ease next week. I'm wondering if next year will be a very wet year or dry year? The last fairly dry year was 1997. Normally the very wet years seem to come in cycles ten. For example 1983 was a very wet year after Ash Wednesday and then 1992 was very wet, interesting but it is too hard to tell what the weather ever has in store. Wonder when we will get our next thunderstorm??? Sure are lacking them. I have a feeling this Spring and summer could see quite a few. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. If the sunlight were sufficiently bright enough (although with our present sun, this is theoretically impossible), you would seen an infinite number of rainbows. Basically a rainbow is caused by sunlight getting both reflected and refracted in the drops of rain. The reflected part means that we see rainbow in a direction opposite to the sun in the sky, while the refracted part is what is responsible for the colours (white sunlight is composed of red/yellow/green/blue, and the refraction just separates out the individual colours so that each is more visible). Now your typical (primary) rainbow is caused by light being reflected _once_ within the raindrop. The angle between the incoming light, and the reflected light is 42 degrees, which means the distance from the centre of the rainbow to the outer arc will be 42 degrees. In more meaningful terms, this is equivalent to 2 times the distance from your pinky finger to your thumb, on your outstretched hand, when held at arms length. Incidently, this is a good method of determining angles in the sky, and hence distances to storms etc if you know, say the base/top height of the clouds. Um, by centre of the rainbow, I mean that point which the arc is centred around. This is the point that your shadow would point to, and who's altitude is the opposite of that of the sun. So if the Sun were 10 degrees above the horizon to the northwest, then the centre of the rainbow would be to the southeast, 10 degrees below the horizon. Now, this second (secondary) rainbow you saw would have been located a further 10 degrees outside of the brighter one (ie half the distance from pinky to thumb....., or 5 times the width of your thumb when held at arms length). Also it would have been fainter. The reason for this is that this is caused by sunlight which has been reflected _twice_ within the raindrop. As a result, if you looked carefully, you may have seen the colours of this rainbow reversed compared to the brighter one. That is, the main one has blue on inside, and red on outside, while this fainter outer one would have had red on inside and blue on outside. Check out http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Pictures/2000/May/26may07.jpg for my attempt at a rainbow picture. So, extending this notion, when the sunlight undergoes 3 reflections within the raindrop, then the colour scheme will be similar to the first rainbow, but unfortunately, too faint to be seen. The reason for this is that at each water/air interface where the reflections take place, some light is also transmitted through without the reflection. So, only a percentage of the original sunlight will make it back to us in the form of the rainbow. Incidently, the process of refraction takes place as the sunlight moves from one medium of different density to another, eg air to water and vice versa. If this doesn't satisfy you, then try this, which has some diagrams of what I've just tried to explain. http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/mtr/opt/wtr/rnbw/frm.rxml and follow the links at the bottom of the page.
