Not tonight.. The last gasp of the sea breeze died out around 9:00pm thereafter was dead calm. Around 11:00pm it was cooling off rapidly with temp falling through the high teens, so I closed the windows. Darn me if I didn't go out 20 mins ago to find that a NW'ster had started up and the temp has risen around 5C since 11:00pm. Now at 12:45AM (!) the temp 23.5C (!!) and rising, humidity 33% and falling. Strange, bizarre, but true! Windows now open again, as it is actually warmer outside than inside (22C). However when we met up, it was evident that if anything was going to happen - it'd be a bit later on in the evening, so we both went back home and did a few things while we waited. Towards the afternoon and evening a line of storms from Moree to Gundy became stronger - and showers were forming ahead of this, and out to Warwick and intensifying. I decided to go and fill up the car and grab some takeway for dinner at about 6:15 in case something happened. A line of showers went into the blue/yellow before I left and aroused my interest - when I got back, I had a quick talk to James and we both had the same feeling (itchy feet) - so I we decided we'd head down to Beaudesert. I threw the dinner into the fridge, and went down to pick up James and we headed down the Mt Lindsay Hwy. We saw occassional lightning, but the best stuff was when we were just south of Beaudesert - some very nice CC lightning bolts!!! Nice and orange too. Unfortunately, these did not last for long, and we watched periodic sheet lightning (with occ CC), for the following hour and a bit. Perhaps what was interesting was that we were getting occassional rumbers of thunder, 1.5-2mins after the strike!!! We'd never had it that distant before - but it's a lot quieter out in the country then the city though. With what appeared to be a dying light show - we rang Jane and she said a few cells were down on the border ranges still - and some showers north of that. We decided to quickly race to Boonah, as the lookout there looked onto the border ranges. Unfortunately, the lightning was still infrequent, although we had fun seeing who could stare at the halogen light the longest, before having to look away because it's about to turn itself back on :) We decided to head back home - a fair bit of smoke SW of Logan though! All up 260km - for lightning hehe, but well worth of course - saw a lot more then we would at home!!! -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2000 01:30:17 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: New Brisbane OBS site Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi John, The winds here were 15-20kn for most of Thursday, gusts to 25-30kn, and the odd gust stronger (33-35kn) - so I have no doubt that Cape Moreton would have got gusts over 40kn. Qantas Flight 551 from Brisbane to Sydney yesterday between 1840 and 1955 AEDST gave a brilliant view of a line of storms between Armidale and just west of Grafton. If you can trust the altitude/speed/temp readouts on the automated display in the passenger cabin, some of the tops of these cells were over 30,000ft. It was certainly amazing watching lightning from this new viewpoint, at some stages there were large flashes that illuminated some entire cloudtops every few seconds, sometimes triggering other flashes in cells further down the line. One flash even fired off a lightning bolt which came out of the top of the cloud, before arcing up and around back down into the anvil. My boss was sitting next to me in the aisle seat and I'm not sure if he appreciated the constant elbowing by me in amidst the chanting of "CC" and "woah did you see that one?"... :) Mal. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2000 02:59:32 +1000 From: Don White X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Unusual temp contrasts Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com And Richmond (western Sydneys) max to 3 pm of 11 was 14 lower than forecast- I wonder if this difference is a record? Normally we would expect the outgoing longwave temperature radiation to dominate the temperature evolution at night under clear sky low RH conditions. Your observation that it did not leads me to believe that during this particular night one (or more) of the several other processes affecting temperature took over. These could be horizontal advection of warmer air (what were the temps like NW of you), subsidence (downslope flow?), or latent heat release upstream (with subsequent horizontal advection). Additional observations should allow you to eliminate or support these three (and other) processes. I was totally caught out after returning from a shopping expidition and observing the skyline. The thought was of the usual drizzle that you would get after storms disapate on reaching the Illawarra escarpment. The cloud base was very high and thin, nothing that you would ever think would generate lightning. Halfway through shaving when BOOOMMMM, rumble rumble!! Raced out onto the balcony, towel around waste, shaving cream on half the face and watched 4-5 solid CG's around Mt Kiera, before silence and nothing again until the line of storms mentioned in later emails by the Blue Mountains people. Had a good look at the area where the lightning originated and besides a bit of heavier rain...nothing. No structure, no indication. I can only think that with the W-NW wind carrying the moisture and cloud over the escarpment, but being quite cold, something stirred up with maybe wind pushing up the escarpment caused enough of a small localised disturbance t! ! o generate a few CG's and that's it. The cells were weak and the discharges infrequent but it did persist until about 10.30pm. A few CGs were observed from weakening cells that made it to about Kyogle I guess, then dissipated. I'm not sure how much the temperature fluctuated last night as I don't have a logger, but the overnight minimum only got down to 19.7 - quite a contrast to recent weeks of 10s. Still no rain, and winds gusting from the West around 30-35 knots this morning. regards, Michael At 22:32 07/09/2000 +1000, you wrote: >Hi All, > >Lightning visible on the Southern horizon from Mt. As the main cloud band that had covered us all day moved out to sea around sunset, a fair amount of acca's was trailing it, an hour or 2 later, storms were forming to the west of the ranges, with yellow/green on radar, Jimmy had told me he could see the odd flash of lightning amongst it, so i grabbed the camera and went to my lookout at ashfield plaza carpark roof. (best westerly view you will around this area) I watched for a while as the odd flash around to the WSW, and a weak cell around Blacktown headed across the city, giving a couple of nice forking CC strikes which went above my head :) After this passed there was still infrequent lightinng to the W (the whole time there had been a cell 150km away or so off the coast to the SE, which i could just see the top of being lite up every 2-3 seconds with lightning, it was red on radar) After a short while the lightnign started getting frequent, 2 CG's at once infront of the rain lite it up like a xmas tree, the rain was alot closer than what i thought (well it was night time ;) but after these 2 bolts, the whole thing really took off, lightning started to get very frequent, and after a short period was up to a strike every 2-3 seconds, and it seemed 1 out of 3 strikes was a CG! perfect for taking photos :) I should have a few good photos, Murphys law, a second before i pressed the shutter to open, a CG hits a power box somewhere towards bankstown giving a nice green glow underneath. I cursed but whilst on the phone to james harris, he said "what about the video camera" and then it clicked i had the video camera set up pointing at it ! i was pretty happy. Took more photos before the storm passed over with more close lightning, and i decided to follow it to the coast whilst on the phone to Jane. Lots of water on roads towards the airport, and by the time i got to the ocean the cell was already about 70km away, these things were flying ! I stayed at the beach for 30 minutes just watching the cells out to sea, then came home This email is alot longer than what i expected it to be, sorry ! It was a great storm, not a thundery shower, not a flash banger, but a good 100% proper storm :) Ok im going. Hi all.
A very interesting synoptic chart this morning for the Australian region, with a mid latitude trough extending almost towards Darwin.
Its not often I have seen such an eqatorward extent of  a southern weather complex. this should bring plenty of interesting weather for the southern parts of Australia over the next couple of days.there may be a risk of very high temps over south eastern QLD if the pre trough north-westerly  cut in across that region on Friday.
regards Clyve H.

At 12:00am Toowoomba was nudging 20C at 675 odd meters elevation. My temp peaked at 24C at 1:00am. Curiously this phenomenon was nowhere near as well marked at other Brisbane regions, although Amberley seemed to record a marked increase. The temp rise corresponded to the onset of the NWster, and the air was clearly mixing at first, as you could feel warm and cooler pockets - the warm pockets very noticeable, I kept looking around for the fire (slightly smoky smell didn't help - but that has become a fixture in the air here for the last 2 weeks). The fact that a similar event was observed 1000K's south of here at a similar time of night is very interesting indeed. One could suggest that cloud around yesterday, which started off in the morning as cirrus patches, lowering to alto stratus around late afternoon, with a few low level cumulus puffs with the onset of the NWster, is reminiscent of a dry warm front transition. More likely we just have a warm airmass from inland make it's way to the coast, and the effect related to displacing cooled seabreeze air rather than a front as such..?? Now have a warm dry and rapidly increasing Westerley - yes folks, welcome to another day of Westerley hell and bushfire madness. John. >snip Subject: RE: aus-wx: Brisbane-wx Bizarre things are happening (fwd) John, > Ok, it's early spring, clear sky, low humidity, land breeze, nightime, well > away from the coast - gets colder as night progresses right? > Not tonight.. Now at 12:45AM (!) the temp 23.5C (!!) > and rising, humidity 33% and falling. > > Strange, bizarre, but true! Let us know what you find out, Cheers, Harald +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2000 09:31:10 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: OFFTOPIC: List problems? Minutes later, flash bang, very close something(didn't see if it was CG or CC).Several discharges followed for about 20-30 mins. then the moon and stars cameout.Weird. Yesterdays storm is still a puzzling event as Michael from Wollongong pointed out.( Hey Michael, what suburb are you from? I'm originally from Balgownie). It was the same down here (Nowra) as what Michael described around the 'gong, very high base, thin appearence and numerous breaks in the clouds. But what a show! I've got to find someone locally who can put my video onto the list. If anybody knows of someone in the Ulladulla/Nowra/Wollongong area that can do this, please let me know as the footage I described in last message (07Sep) is really interesting. The Cu around at the moment is building and collapsing quicker than I've seen for a while but there's not much height to it.Let's hope for something soon. Most stations in the Sydney basin away from the coast warmed by 5 to 10 degrees some time between 1 and 3am, with the main warming occurring in half an hour or less where such readings are available. Camden had the largest rise: >68 METAR 0908 0000 35005KT 05.7/05.6 Q996.3 RF00.0/001.6 >68 METAR 0908 0100 05006KT 06.6/06.6 Q996.3 RF00.0/001.6 >68 METAR 0908 0153 34010KT 12.5/12.1 Q996.4 RF00.0/001.6 >68 METAR 0908 0300 30010KT 16.0/06.2 Q995.3 RF00.0/001.6 with a temp rise from 6.6 at 1am to 16 at 3am. The dewpoint spike (12.1 degrees) at 1.53 is interesting. There doesn't appear to be a geographic pattern in the time of the temp rise, so I suspect broadscale upper winds simply increased at that time, mixing down more or less uniformly over the whole basin depending on the depth of the inversion. The surface wind after the temp rise was mostly NW or NNW and only 10 to 15kt compared with variable and ~3 to 6 beforehand. At Mount Boyce, at 1080m on the Blue Mountains west of the basin, the temp only varied between 8.6 and 5.5 between midnight and 6am, with a normal distribution and a hefty 20kt gusting 30/35 wind at all observations! I watched the line of later storms from about 8pm when they were back near Goulburn. The lightning slackened as the storms approached the escarpment, only to strengthen again once the line was offshore, so basically the storms were weakest crossing the coastal plain. Not surprising considering the west wind, I was half surprised that they even made it to the coast. ----- Original Message ----- From: Godsman, Andrew AG To: Sent: Friday, 8 September 2000 6:46 Subject: RE: aus-wx: Strangest storm in southern Illawarra > Michael, > I must agree with you there. > > Regards > Andrew Godsman > > PS Great lightning show later in the evening, up to 6 lightning active cells around at one stage. > > > ---------- > > From: Michael Thompson[SMTP:michaelt at ozemail.com.au] > > Reply To: aussie-weather at world.std.com > > Sent: Thursday, 7 September 2000 8:10 > > To: aussie-weather at world.std.com > > Subject: aus-wx: Strangest storm in southern Illawarra > > > > We had quite a few rumbles just offshore around 5.30pm today. Your right about the speed of that line. When I first spotted these on the radar out west of Goulburn I proposed to drive up the infamous Macquarie Pass to get some pics west of Robertson. My fear was the line would weaken within sight of the escarpment, so I wanted to get west of the escarpment. However after waiting for a radar update and looping it I estimated these storms were doing in excess of 80 kph. Instead I drove just around the corner near Lake Illawarra. The storms only took little over an hour to move from east of Goulburn to overhead. Michael > ocean the cell was already about 70km away, these things were flying ! Andrew Godsman is another W'gong member from North Gong. As far as video goes we don't put it on the list as such. You should try to make a AWSA meeting and show it there. Although I realise that Nowra to North Sydney is a hike. Thinking of that if we get 2-3 more Illawarra - Shoalhaven folks we could hold our own meets. Funny you should mention about that Cu, I have seen this type of stuff last a full day before with west winds, but not for a few years. Constant broken Cu from the west today, dissipating about 10kms offshore into complete clear. Even now at 9pm it is still streaming through.
