Media reports (Channel 7) of gusts up to 100 kph. The usual; damaged awnings, clip-lock roofs going sailing, trees causing power-lines down, pyromaniacs not being able to control themselves. (I reckon legislation should be enacted to require reroofing any building with a clip-lock roof. Sooner or later the roof will get blown off. May as well change it in a controlled manner and prevent further risk to life or property.) Very dry around Brisbane, even worse up the Brisbane Valley. Typical end of winter weather. Great storms in the arvo though :) Some locals were trying to tell me this was very normal but considering the climate spoke of low 80's for this time of year i was a bit sceptical. But we have cooled now and it's hardly reaching the high 80's so i'm happy - especially considering i was blasted in from a frigid southern hemisphere winter :) Seen some beatuiful storms already - we had one gust front push gale force right through town the other day with lightning frequencies at probbaly 6/sec - not suprising we got pea hail shortly after. Still waiting for the secondary max in the Jet Stream which should be arriving now - crossing all fingers, i want a good supercell before winter hits :) uru, Lyle. "Leslie R. Seroiusly, that persistent moist easterly has finally been given the heave-ho by a big trough moving in from the west. Now it's time for the West Coast to get a drenching (with the added bonus of thunderstorms), while Canterbury dries out in the northwesters. Maybe a few spits crossing the mountains, but I'd rather have northwesterly spitting rain than easterly drizzle. Notable observations on 24 January 1982 include: Melbourne 43.3 (highest in the last 30 years) Laverton 44.0 Point Lonsdale 44.5 Orbost 45.2 Sale 44.6 Darriman 45.7 (south of Sale) No 47s, but eleven stations topped 45 (nine in northern Victoria, plus the two Gippsland ones above). Highest were 46.3 at Walpeup and 46.0 at Mildura and Donald. Only two stations in the state, Gabo Island and Mount Hotham, did not reach 35. The following night, Melbourne did not drop below 32 until the change came through at, I think, 7 or 8 in the morning. All in all, this event was probably the most notable Victorian heatwave of the post-1939 period, although 31 January-1 February 1968 would run it close. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com There is a technical name for that split second after you hit the "Enter" button and the moment you realize you shouldn't have. It's called an ohnosecond. I sure had one tonight! I thought I was sending a private e-mail to Jacob, and instead sent it to the entire list. (see the following) While I have to stand by what I said because I wrote it, I would have been much more diplomatic had I intended to address the entire list. I apologize to Jane (and the entire list). I was being flippant in asking what she meant by ""comments that are not appropriate ... to Australia" and meant no disrespect. I have corresponded several times with Jane since the creation of the list and have always found her to be very intelligent and well written. My only hope lies in the fact that I have seen in her a keen sense of humor which hopefully will apply here. I apologize for to Jane and the others for my breech of 'netiquette in making public private correspondence. It most defiantly was not my intention. The last thing I would like to see is a long protracted discussion of this matter. If you wish to discuss it further please send private e-mail. I love this list, and as much as it would hurt to do so, I will set it up so that Jacob will be the sole manager of the list, if it is necessary to put an end to this discussion. The purpose of the list is to discuss weather, not the operation of the list. Sincerely David Hart Aussie-weather list owner. For the storm inclined who are not on that list, follow the link < http://www.blitzwetter.de/ > to a German chaser's page (in German, although not too hard to follow!) which has a few pics and a summary of these events. Certainly has been an active August / September over there. I recall during my 1 week in Germany, during August 1996, three nasty looking storms on consective days (2 days in Berlin, 1 in Cologne). Looking forward to an active chase season here well! Time: about 6pm Location: The Weather Channel 7 West St North Sydney Meeting will be the usual setup including a weather briefing from one of the ASWA guys who works there - perhaps Matt Pearce. The main feature of the evening will be a talk by Paul Graham on Radio Communications. He will cover the advantages and disadvantages of the various frequencies and also the feasibility of setting up communications within ASWA. This will allow members to converse across Sydney and relay messages to each other. This is one of the possibilities and also in the long run cheaper. The talk will also cover the feasibility of car to car communications during storm chases. What to bring? yourself and also some snacks and nibblies plus drink. Bring some money for the pizza if you wish to eat some good healthy food. It would be great to continue seeing some new faces as well as those who normally attend. See you there. The highest gust I can find in what looks like a continuous record for Falls Creek was 63kts or 116.6km/h at 4.30am. Digit transposition perhaps? The highest 10 minute average wind was 39 knots (72km/h) at 4am. Mt Buller got a couple of gusts of 130km/h late last night, with average winds up to 87km/h, which is plausible, though Mt Buller has been a bit erratic of late. I don't think I believe 161. I hope not but we could have the hail and thunderstorms that Leslie Baxter wants over Sydney during the Olympics. It's been One year and 13 days we have heard that lovely sound of thunder over Christchruch City here in New Zealand MetService promised some thunder over the Canterbury Plains yesterday but once again being hopeless in producing that so much wanted weather event to happen here. The NW should help to dry out some of the areas of Canterbury that produced record rainfalls in the last 2 weeks of August, some areas receiving the highest rainfall ever. No thunder, unfortunately. Ah well we have to wait to see what spring will deliver here. No tornadoes, severe thunderstorms with hail and whatever. I don't understand what all this fuss is over about weather. I think it is going to be calm and boring because of global warming, it seems to be here. I'm dying for a storm chase across the Canterbury Plains!!! It's been so fucking long since one!!!
