While not record breaking yet - this is unusual for this The list might find this of interest. We, here in the Central Plains of the US are in the midst of the worst heat and dry spell sense the dust bowl days of the 1930's. From Texas northward through Oklahoma, west Arkansas, all of Kansas, most all of Missouri and southern parts of Nebraska and Iowa the heat has been relentless for several weeks now. There has been a very strong upper level ridge anchored over these areas causing widespread airmass subsidence. As you know, sinking air heats. The daily high temperatures are ranging from about 40 C to about 44C in most places. Here at my home it is reaching daily high temperatures of 41 C to 43 C. Night time temperatures have been ranging from 22.5 to 27. Moreover, all of the above areas have had little if any rain in the last 60 to 80 days. So, it can always be worse, I guess. I can look on the bright side: I have not had any water seepage into my fully finished basement (where my office is) all this year so far. Les ************************ Leslie R. Strong to gale force westerlys all day peaking at 90kph, combined with exceptionally dry 0/8 conditions, have produced the worst bushfire day for 50 years (if you believe Channel 9). Entire acreage estates out near Ipswich evacuated as grass/bushfires gutted the region. Full damage assessment not yet known, but it is suggested that homes have been destroyed along with many outbuildings. So far Mt. Crosby has been spared the conflagration, but everything is tinder dry and ready to go. Other damage around town includes trees down, widespread power cuts due to lines down, and a few large signs ripped down. The theory is that the fires were started by downed powerlines arcing - personally I think there is a bunch of juvenile dickheads running around with a few boxes of matches... But never let this get in the way of a good show - one of the best fireworks spectaculars ever seen in Brisbane went ahead at 7:30am marking the start of the river festival. Seemed quite bizarre when there were a number of orange blobs around the horizon (as viewed from Mt. Cooth-tha), from bushfires out of control. VBS_LOVELETTER.A is also known as the 'Lovebug' virus, which spread around the world during May 2000 and caused massive damage to user data. While VBS_LOVELETTER.BE contains a very destructive payload and also mass-emails itself to other users in the Microsoft Outlook address book, VBS_LOVELETTER.BF contains a bug in its code, which prevents it from mailing infected email attachments to other users. Then click Apply and keep clicking OK until all of the levels of dialogue boxes are closed. If you don't find WSH in the Accessories box, then it wasn't installed on your system and the KAKWORM cannot operate. Additionally, if your Windows directory is named something other than C:\Windows, the virus program will fail. There are also "Security Updates" on the Microsoft website which allow you to keep WSH active and not be hit by similar viruses, but I don't know for sure that nobody will figure out how to get around the security patches. The only thing you lose by not having WSH is that for some of these people who have hours to spend writing HTML stationery which places animated backgrounds behind their e-mail messages, you will no longer be able to sit there and enjoy the fruits of their creativity - you will be limited to reading the words in their e-mails instead! Hi les L in USA - I feel for you with those high temps. Must be scary thinking about the fire possibilities........ also for the SE Qldners which raises 1 point - didnt the BOM predict a 50% chance of exceeding the mean rainfall? But then the big question I supose is what is the mean rainfall for that period - if its normally dry then I suppose that indicator means jack shit. Heat trough up here is looking like setting in for a few days - with another very hot day. Afternoon Inland showers / thundery showers are predicted now for the rest of the week. Mot of the Top End and in fact the Territory had 30 + temps (which is unusual this time of Year with most of the Top End having temps over 36C - the Territory Top would be over 40C but wont know until all data is in - but Jabiru had 39C. 2 differing air masses though - around Alice Springs the dewpoint was minus 6 while Darwin its fairly humid at 32 with a DP of 23. Hector has again made an appearance even appearing on Satpics today quite markedly. Many Cu around but there is quite an inversion (I think.....) at around 600mb which is capping all Cu + towers from doing anything major. Love this weather!! It may be the flash reflecting on the drops. If you look at the photo where the brightest part of the flash seems to be slightly to the right of centre, you will notice that the objects show up brighter. What are other people's thoughts... Here in coastal NSW anything over 40C is rare, but when it does occur it is in conditions not unlike Santa Ana of Calif, that is gale force offshore winds with RL sometimes into single figures. If we get that and it is dry the place goes up like a tinderbox. Michael > airmass subsidence. As you know, sinking air heats. I was there for all of a few hours and a nice storm appeared at about 1.30am on Saturday morning. It was all embedded stuff, but gave a fairly good light show for about an hour. There seemed to be some more active cells further to the North-West. The storm was accompanied by a downpour which lasted about 10 minutes followed by a sudden pick up in the wind which fairly howled for a good half an hour or so, although not enough for any damage. I quite enjoyed the show - although I think I woke everyone else up in the house stumbling around in the dark.
