Currently (11.50pm) at my place in Blackheath it's 2.4 and raining, with 1.8mm in the gauge since 6pm; Mount Boyce, only 2km away but 60m higher, was 1.4 at 11pm with 0.6mm in the same time. Orange Airport has been around 2.8 since 7pm, with 6mm in that time. Working on the basis that the rain will turn to snow around 2.0 degrees, and looking at all those lumpy bits moving east towards us on the satpic, I reckon something's gotta happen. I've put up an article on today's weather across 5 states, with an interesting satpic animation that graphically shows why the Bass Strait islands caught near record rain today. The fire generated tremendous updraught which in turn generated gale force winds spiralling inwards. In turn, tornado-shaped funnels of fire formed which raced across the countryside destroying all in their path. One of these "towering infernos" passed about 300 or 400 metres away from where a group of us were sitting in a burnt-out area waiting for the fire to cool enough so we could escape. It made a noise like an express train and every gum tree within 100 metres of it's path exploded like a bomb. An ATV channel 0 film crew appeared to be getting some excellent shots but had to drop the camera and run for their lives and the camera and videotape were destroyed in the fire. It was a rather frightening experience and I hope I never get near one again. The same fire was generating enormous mountains of cloud some of which later fell as light showers of rain. There were many C-C lightning flashes in the clouds but I saw no C-Gs. Phil <>< Phil Smith Director Doctor Disk Limited Unit B, 4th Floor, Imperial Heights Belair Gardens, Shatin, NT HONG KONG S.A.R. It would appear that there is a discontinuity os some sort beneath the cloud and that forced lifting is taking place from below and possibly from above. The congestus above indicates that this cloud at that level is convective and positively buoyant. What a great day it was! (Except for the fact that I was at work for most of it). I went to work early so I could try and leave work early if I had to. We had not one, but two hailstorms at work! Once at 1:50pm (only very small and brief), and again at 2:20pm. We had strong winds (30kn) with heavy rain initially, and then the winds died off (we have a tin roof at the office), and then I suddenly heard sone "tings" and yelled "THAT'S HAIL!!!" as I flew out the door for the millionth time (much to my boss' displeasure) with the video camera. In the background, my boss was telling me how hopeless I was for saying she didn't have to move her car! She didn't understand that pea sized hail wouldn't do anything! Anyway, 5mins later, I wrapped it up (finally) and left - the storms were moving to the SE to fast, so I headed to Rochedale Rd as there was a nice little lookout there to the east, and it'd put me in a better position if anything else developed. There was a lot of water on the road near work, and some on Logan Rd - flash flooding on Rochedale Rd! Branches and stuff down on Logan Rd (northbound), and also a tree down on Mt Cotton Rd. I had to eventually turn back and head for uni - I took the SE Fwy into the city to goto uni. On the way I was watching some AWESOME updrafts on the Cb's out to sea, and decided that a stop in the emergency storm chasing lane (known to others as the emergency stopping lane) on the freeway and videoed and took some photos - awesome site!!! After uni, I battled with peak hour to try and get home quickly...stopping after watching a beautiful sunset unfold to the west and took a few photos with the Brisbane CBD as the backdrop. The Cb's out to sea were still visible and lightning active. I had to get home and do a few household chores - I wanted to do these ASAP in case a lightning show formed. And it did!!! At 6:30pm I flew out the door again an raced eastwards to Cleveland Pt (not Redcliffe...) and tried to get there before the PITA "Koala zone speed limits' kicked in the bayside suburbs. I got there at 6:50pm, and watched an orgasmical lightning show for 1-1.5hrs! I think I got about 40-50mins of continuous lightning footage. I grabbed my fold-up arm chair and sat down and relaxed next to the water while watching 12-15 different active cells out to sea - HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!! Too much excitement for this storm chaser!!! Lets slow it down just a bit...at least until the uni holidays so I have the time I had a call from Rals (ASWA QLD) on my answering machine reporting 1.5-2cm hail. Ross also phoned me twice with joyous exclamations as he was sitting down on the Gold Coast watching the lightning show too. Wow - this day was FANTASTIC!!! Just everything looked so beautiful! I'll try and do some video captures tomorrow if I get a chance in between studying for exams - and getting ready for going down to Sydney on Sat. A few sloppy snow flakes fell but that was all. Yesterday, as Laurier mentioned earlier, saw a few hail showers at 12:10pm, 2:15pm and a heavier one at 7:15pm which took the temp closer to 2.5. The hail was small, below pea size. Today we've had a few very light showers of rain. Hope this system gives us something more later today/tomorrow. Looking at the Antarctic temps, Casey (which is roughly due south of Perth) has seen unusual (but not record-breaking) warmth in the last few days - the last four days have had maxima between 0 and -2, 8-10 degrees above normal but short of the August record of 3.0. Mawson and Davis, which are somewhat further west, have seen nothing out of the ordinary. Macquarie Island, on the fringe of the blocking high, has been colder than normal (the maximum on Sunday was -1, something only experienced about once a year on average) but quite dry, with only 6mm precip in the last week and three completely dry days (quite something given that there are 26.9 days with precipitation in a normal August). It looks like the block isn't going anywhere in a hurry so it may stay quite dry (although the first half of the month was wet so no monthly records are in danger). We don't get sunshine data in real time, but I'd be interested to know if they're getting any (not a common occurrence in a place that gets only about 20% of the possible sunshien!). Follow the "Synoptic Charts for Major Events" link off the homepage at http://ausweather.simplenet.com. Just print it out and have fun. The intermediate hour (6am, noon, 6pm, midnight) charts don't have as many ship reports as the main hour (3am, 9am, 3pm, 9pm) ones, and there's a paucity of drifting buoys in our region at present, so some imagination (and satpic analysis) is needed over ocean areas. Some interesting temperature fluctuations about in showers -- Orange airport dropped from 5.3 at noon to 2.9 at 2pm with a 3mm shower, then rose to 4.6 by 4pm. Bathurst 6.8 at 2pm to 4.2 at 3pm with 1.5mm, then back up to 5.6 at 4pm. Mt Boyce has dropped from 4.9 to 3.2 in the past hour (to 4) for no apparent reason. The models I've seen drop 850hPa temperatures and thickness just a tad tonight, as the surface development off the Gippsland coast and the eastward movement of the upper low provide a mechanism to move some of the colder air from down south northwards. Last night was oh so borderline -- maybe tonight it'll be cold enough to tip the scales.
