Heya Deano,

Howzit going over there in the far Eastern town of Monbulk.....(j/k).  For those who don't know Sunbury is actually a suburb to the NW of the city out past the airport.  I'm not too sure how you came to the conclusion of straight line winds from the very little information given but due to the lack of directional shear in the atmosphere today I would tend to agree.  Plenty of speed shear has allowed some of these storms to be particularly long living.  Probably severe multicells.  The cell which effected Sunbury first pooped up on radar NW of Daylesford and it went from nothing to pink in just 30 mins (this was at about 3:30pm).  From here it pulsed in and out of the highest intensity (red) for about 30 mins and then after that it remained "in the red" for a very long time with the cell eventually passing just N of the CBD (while I was in the bloody doctors surgery getting the rest of the week off for flu).  It continued to maintain its intensity while tracking over the E and SE suburbs and finally disapated not all that long ago (about 8pm).  The trough which caused this is now heading out to the east with a severe storm advice still out for the Northern Country.  Thunderstorms are forecast to continue until the actual front passes and there is also a chance of storms W of the front for a while as well.  The front is estimated to be crossing Melbourne at about 11pm tonight.
This is the latest metar for Melbourne. They are not going for any more storms but the latest sat pic and radar shows the potential
is still there for some action.

Hello all,
I just received word of a severe storm that has just caused damage to the north-western Victorian town of Sunbury. A basketball stadium was destroyed and a number of homes unroofed. There is very little information to go by, however, at this stage it appears that the phenomenon may fit the category of straight-line winds.

Terry Ryan from the Melbourne Bureau was on 774 and suggested wind gusts to 150km/h were possible this afternoon.  774 3LO (local radio) also had people ring in earlier reporting funnel/spout cloud type features (his words) in Sunbury AND near Ballarat as well.  This would initially instill thoughts of tornadoes (note the plural) into people minds (mine too - i take back what i said before about it being unlikely).  They intend to investigate tomorrow.  I'll keep you all updated as information comes to hand.

Hi all,
Channel 9 8.30 news this morning talked of a tornado, showing a pic of a definate funnel. The report did not say where it was, and the pic was taken from a tall building. Broadford received 23mm last nite between 6.45/10pm with a few cg's and heaps of cc's. I got an excellant 1/2hr audio recording also
Cheers Peter

Hook echoes from supercells usually measure about 1-2 kilometres (or less) across. They are commonly detected using a low-level radar slice, not IR satellite cloud top temperature. Also, the IR satellite image has a resolution of 1 km (or 4 km), which is at least the size of a standard hook itself. Compare the 12Z IR image with the 12Z frame of http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/anthony/August%209/Melbourne%20Broad.gif The IR hook is a line of showers and storms extending WNW towards Bendigo, I think. Only supercells of the outtathisworld category allegedly show a hook throughout the depth of the storm which can be observed from a satellite. The Wichita Falls storm which produced an F5 tornado in 1979 was such a beast. Congrats to the Victorian contingent for improving the VIC tornado statistics. Have to say I can't recall seeing such a dramatic wintertime electrical display in Melbourne before. At its peak, there would have been a visible discharge every 5 seconds or so in Box Hill. The wind was also impressive (down drafts), with gusts which I would estimate to be around 35 knots. All up 10mm from the first (major) storm with some small hail. Morning All,

Well if you haven't yet seen the footage of this tornado I urge you all to watch your news tonight (channel 9 had the best footage here but it may vary from state to state).  There were two separate locations and two very different funnel shapes.  I'm not saying there was two separate funnels - just two different stages.  One was about 3/4 of the way to the ground - taken from inside a car at a distance of about 7km (rough estimate) but you cannot see the ground so no touchdown could be confirmed - the funnel was cone shaped close to cloud base and then narrows rapidly futher down.  The other footage is taken from a hill NW of Melbourne and you can see the funnel extending about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way down but underneath there is clear and definite contact with the ground.  The funnel is cone shaped here.  Power flashes with sparks spiraling into the funnel are so clear, basically confirming the touchdown and hence then tornado.  There was also some more footage on Channel 10 last night from the same hill which showed a different shape funel again.  This was more elephant trunk type - imagine a full elephant trunk tornado on the ground and then cut the bottom 3/4 off and that's what it looked like.  There are reports of damage from Sunbury, Tullamarine, Airport West and Essendon.  The distance from Sunbury to Essendon is about 20km.....it'll be interesting to hear from the BoM later today - they are doing a damage survey this morning.  I am going to head out today for a short drive to see if i can find the place where the footage was taken from and also out past Sunbury to see if the damage starts further out (there are a few dirt roads out there which I know of).

I have taped all the above mentioned news reports and will bring it along to the next Vic ASWA meeting (9th September - Doncaster Pancake Parlour) as well as my footage of the earlier storms and lightning footage.  Unfortunately I was unable to chase as I have the flu and had a doctors appointment at 5:45pm (just 5 mins after the tornado).  Chris Gribben was able to chase after work but he'll fill us in later as to how he went.

Anyway - to top it off there is a slight chance of weak thunderstorms again here later today (but these will be definite cold air CB's).

Keep an eye on the MSC page for the report of yesterday's storms...it'll probably be up later in the week or the weekend.

Enjoy.

And just for some clarrification, all public announcements/activites in regards to ASWA must be cleared by your state representative before they can proceed. If neccessary, your state representative will explore the neccessary avenues to gain approval/disproval of the public announcement/activity. Thought I'd better mention it... If people have ideas of what they'd like to do in regards to ASWA - they should inform their state representative also, and then they will look at the idea (and probably bring it up at the next state meeting). Just remember, this is not an ASWA mailing list, an Aussie-weather one :-) Anthony Cornelius Leslie Baxter wrote: > > I nominate myself for the job. Generally, reasonable falls (1 to 3 inches) were recorded from Enerald/Duaringa south through Roma, petering out towards the border. The "shadow wave" which often brings rain events 2 weeks after the passing of the "main wave" is therefore due around 18th - 21st August. · The SOI phase for the June-July period is a Consistently Near Zero Phase. The monthly SOI for July was -4.0 and -6.5 for June. The 30-day average value of the SOI up to Monday 7th August is -3.9. Atmospheric circulation patterns: · As daily weather systems pass Darwin & Tahiti the pressure anomalies at each also vary. The current slightly negative 30-day average value of the SOI is because the atmospheric pressure at Darwin is slightly higher than the long-term average. · Surface-level easterly winds across the Equatorial Pacific Ocean are still slightly stronger than the long-term average. This is a remnant of the 1998-2000 La Niņa event. · The northwest cloudbands that sometimes bring rainfall to southern Queensland have been relatively absent this year. Ocean temperature patterns: · In the key areas of the equatorial Pacific Ocean SSTs are close to the long-term average. There are however still a few features of the La Niņa persisting. · The development of patterns of ocean temperature over the next 6 months will be very important in determining summer rainfall probabilities. · The rainfall outlook for the August-September-October period is calculated using the June-July SOI phase. Generally speaking, the chances of above-`normal` rainfall for much of Queensland and the eastern states for the August-September-October period are mostly between 40 and 50%. This means there are equal chances of it being an unusually "wet" or a "dry" 3 months. There are however exceptions. In northern and central Queensland districts, probabilities of above-median rainfall are slightly lower at between 20% and 40% for this three month period. Also, in the extreme south-east of Queensland and northern NSW chances of exceeding median rainfall for the August-September-October period are between 50% and 70%. Since last months outlook, the probabilities of exceeding median rainfall have decreased slightly across most of the state. · Other climate indicators are also suggesting that CQ has high chances of being dry. The position of the high pressure cells have been unusually high this winter which has contributed to the dry conditions. This will also affect other areas of eastern Queensland. Important · There is a high degree of variability between many locations, so try to get the forecast for your particular location. More detailed rainfall probabilities are at the end of this message (also see the Long Paddock internet site and Australian Rainman). · The rainfall outlook is of probabilities of above median rainfall for the total 3 month period, not a single month of during those 3 months. · Looking at the climate in the years where climate indicators were similar to present may help readers understand the climate picture. These analogue years include 1971, 1963, 1962, 1957, 1929, 1925. Future developments · Most computer simulation models that develop forecasts of the La Niņa / El Niņo are suggesting that the neutral pattern that we are entering into will last for another 6 months. However, many of the neutral forecasts are leaning towards warmer rather than cooler SSTs (eg the ECMWF model). Therefore the possibility of an El Niņo developing is not ruled out. These SST predictions change as the information fed into them is updated, hence we recommend keeping a close track of these forecasts. A summary of these model outputs can be found at: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/ahead/ENSO-summary.shtml Another good website providing an update of conditions in the equatorial Pacific Ocean is: http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/toga-tao/el-nino/forecasts.html#enso The Department of Primary Industries regularly holds "Managing for Climate" workshops. Anyone can attend a workshop. They are designed to give you a thorough understanding of weather and climate. They should enable you to become proficient in reading weather maps and satellite pictures, and in understanding how climate forecasts are produced and how to interpret forecast maps of rainfall and sea surface temperatures, to name but a few highlights. Workshops will next be held in Oakey on August 23th and Dalby August 24th (note the change in date). Workshops are also being planned for Blackall and Winton on August 30/31st. Contact Damien O`Sullivan for more details on (07) 4160 0717. KEY WORLD FORECASTS · Using the June-July SOI phase, the following world regions show a reduced chance of getting their normal (median) rainfall for the August-September-October period: Much of Brazil, eastern Europe, northern India, central China, Indonesia, North Korea. New Zealand Sth Island. · The following world regions currently show a reasonably high probability of above median rain for the August to October period this year: Chile, Mexico, Mozambique, northern Russia, Thailand. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: nzts.nz at pop3.caverock.net.nz X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.3 (32) Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2000 17:34:09 +1200 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: John Gaul Subject: Re: aus-wx: Bugger, we missed out! Hi All

I've been having trouble getting through. Anyway my pics are now in the members gallery at the Brisbane Storm Chasers site.

I have also just contacted the Guyra Hospital, and talked to Ray, he's the person who records the temps etc for Guyra.   He said it was the best of the small falls.   I'd like to see what they call big falls.

cheers

Hi everyone,

Certainly a fantastic evening and night last night. I managed a small but quite successful chase in the early evening.

The day was quite mild and had a feel to it as early as 10-11am. During the early afternoon a few nice looking TCu towers shot up over the bay so the atmosphere was conditionally unstable. Unfortunately I was at work so a chase then was impossible, but as my work involves driving I could keep half (or maybe both <g>) my eye on the sky to see what was developing. Towards the NW as I drove over the Burnley street ramp I could see very "scatty" Cb and TCu tops but they had a great look to them none the less.

My driving stint finished at around 3pm or so and I had to work inside for the next 45 mins, when I went back outside to load a truck I was awestruck to see a dark Cb anvil stretching across a fair bit of the western horizon. I wanted to leave immediately but couldn't, lucky for me I only live 2mins from my work. At 5pm I literally ran out the door and raced home to have a quick look at radar and an even quicker chat on IRC to see where the best way to go was. Although suggestions were made to go towards Seymour, I thought the cells were moving too quickly for me to get up there in time and so decided to head out the Western Hwy towards Ballarat.

I left home about 5.15pm and after using some colourful language driving through the city (don't ppl know that others may want to get a close up look of a storm?!?!?! <g>), and helped by my knowledge of Melb roads to which I am thankful to the job I do <g>, I made reasonably good time out through Nth Melb, past Flemington and towards Sunshine. The lighning by this stage was every 3-4 secs to my priority was to get to a vantage point. I could see flashes over the top of buildings and tried to think of the best way to get to Highpoint shopping centre in the mid NW suburbs. I got to Epsom rd and then the rain started pelting down, huge drops combined with awesome pulsing lightning in the distance. A left turn into Maribynong Rd saw a further increase in the rain and then the great, but also scary sound, of clunk clunk on top of the car!!!!!! The hail had me excited and it was 1-2cms in size. I must have got the edge of the precipitation core because it didn't last very long. The driving conditions had become very hazardous by now so somewhat luckily was close to Highpoint and cover by now and as the rain had managed to get yet harder I positioned myself undercover with a view towards the N (Melb AP) and NE (Broadmeadows direction). The lightning was truly amazing for August, and the video camera was surprisingly steady considering the adrenalin that was present. The sound we all adore, great deep booming longlasting thunder was abound and I was in heaven. The rain was more like something you would see in the tropics during the wet and though there was quite a bit of breeze I saw nothing severe wind wise. The storms were moving quite quickly and so after 10-15 mins I decided to follow the cell into the city. Problem was that there had been considerable flooding on the roads which obviously slowed down the traffic. I saw some huge strikes on the way home but by the time I got back to Richmond the lightning was well off into the distance and starting to get obscured. Through the evening very heavy showers and some thunderstorms affected most suburbs and I saw a few more strikes over about St Kilda at 9pm or so I think. A great day and not too bad a chase either, hope it is a precursor to the rest of the season.

Hope everyone else in Melb and close to Melb enjoyed it

Subject: aus-wx: My Melb chase

Hello Michael and all,
I thought I would just shed some light concerning the topic of the End of Year Chase and the frequency of tornadoes in various parts of Australia. Perhaps the greatest hotspot for tornado occurrences is the Sydney Metropolitan Area itself. According to Bart Geerts (University of Alabama and Huntsville) and Mosese Noke-Raico (Macquarie University), the Sydney CBD and outer suburbs has the highest tornado density in Australia. Within a half circle with a radius of 50km around Sydney, a total of 6 tornadoes per year per 23,000 square kilometres occurred for the period 1960-1992. This is approximately the same as the tornado density in the central Great Plains states of the USA and half the density in the tornado alley in Central Oklahoma (Davies-Jones, 1985). Hereafter, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide bare frequencies not lagging far behind that of Sydney.
When you compare the frequency of tornado occurrences with that of the population density, the prominant reason why tornadoes are considered rare can be seen, (after Minor et al.)
The Queensland Highlands has a tornado occurrence of 1.2 per 100,000 square kilometres. The population density for the same area is 0.3 per square kilometre. When the tornado occurrences are joined with the population density, the number of occurrences per 100,000 people is 4.0. This is quite an extraordinary figure considering the population. If you compare this with Oklahoma in the US, which has a tornado occurrence of 22.0 per 100,000 square kilometres and a population density of 11.2 per square kilometre, the occurrence of tornadoes once joined with the density of population comes out to 2.0. This is a remarkable figure considering, just proving the point that in some cases, Australia is the home of tornado occurrences equal to, if not greater than that of the US is some areas.
Other areas of significance are the Western Australia Agricultural Belt and Goldfields which has an tornado occurrence of 0.65, a population of 0.27 per square kilometre and the number of occurrence per 100,000 people is 2.4; still, quite a large number considering the population. The Victorian Western Highlands have a tornado occurrence of 5.6 and a population density of 5.6, leaving a rather small number of tornado occurrences per 100,000 people: 1.0. Finally the New South Wales Slopes have a tornado occurrence of 1.1, population density of 1.3 and an occurrence per 100,000 persons of just 0.9.
However, using the figures of past tornado occurrences, the population of this ever-growing country proves a major dilemma and investigators problem when attempting to determine the climatology of Australian tornadoes. The large growth in population over the past decade (not taking into consideration environmental factors), the increase in population is single handedly responsible for the increase in tornado reports and hence, the frequency.

Cheers,
Dean AL Sgarbossa

Mandurah has had many tornadoes over the years, why it does they are not sure, but it maybe something to do with how the coast is in that area as strong cold fronts hit the coast.
