Yes, I've heard of this record too. The fetch to King Island has to be thousands of kilometres - assuming a typical SW. I'm sure there is a mathematical model - I think someone may have mentioned it before - but one thing to keep in mind is that the height of the wave increases as the depth of the water decreases. (The number 12 seems to ring a bell???) You can have enormous amounts of energy below the surface in very deep water but it is only when the water depth begins to decrease that you get the big waves - e.g. Hawaii. I don't know exactly where the wave rider buoy is off King Island but I'd say it at least has to be on the continental shelf to get a height like 60.2m. There can't be too many places in the world where you have such a long fetch meeting such a relatively shallow water depth as you have around King Island & the West Coast of Tassie? Bass Strait is notorious for the waves it generates partly because it is shallow and because our prevailing wind comes from the SW which gives plenty of opportunity to build up big waves. The shallow water makes the waves stand up more and helps make them 'backless' which is bad for boats! King Island provides some shelter but also increases the tidal flow which exacerbates the situation. The film certainly didn't exaggerate! Even I've seen est. 50+ footers in relatively 'moderate' (45 knots sustained SW) conditions in Bass Strait - if you are heading towards them the boat ( & you) freefall for what seems like an eternity until you crash into the trough at the bottom. Not very pleasant & very difficult to sleep! The film had lots of inconsistencies in real details but made for a really good story anyway. I thought the most annoying part was the rescue footage - they seemed to be way off reality there. I heard that the boat in the film (Andrea Gail) was a twisted wreck when it was recovered which suggests that it was 'dumped' by a wave. The satellite pictures were good too but played too little a part in the film to get much out of it. Hope those who haven't seen the film yet haven't been deterred by anything that's been said yet! The mean wind speed at the time was 126 km/hr. The highest instumentally observed wave is 26 metres from crest to trough recorded on the ocean wesather ship, "Weather Recorder" at 59N 19W (in the Atlantic) on 30 December 1972. so, as for 60 metres, well...... It is a bit like snow.... well exaggerated. don White Debbie Parker wrote: > > Are you saying a wave can be 60.2 metres i.e. ~181 feet ....... > > Yes, I've heard of this record too. The three courses also range across a good geographical area/altitude meaning they give a good general picture. I (personally) would not waste my time with the other data, and especially that which is fragmented (eg the Falls Creek record), which misses nearly 10 years around 1950 - I am not convinced that identical locations/recording technique would recommence after a break of 10 years! I haven't looked at this quantitatively, but as usual the ski industry statements are hyperbole! Looking at the most recent snow depths (3rd of August), Spencers Creek (1830 m - out from Charlotte Pass) 174.7 cm Deep Creek (1620 m - SW of Cabramurra) 106.4 cm Three Mile Dam (1460 m - below Mt Selwyn) 21.7 cm These compare with (aprox) 200, 160, and 100 cm in 1995, so the "season" is currently running the best since 1995. In 1996 it really started dumping about now, so the 96 season depths may run ahead of this season pretty soon. All that said, I have just got back from 3 nights at Hotham where the skiing was excellent and combined with fantastic weather... All up the best trip/combination of snow/weather I can remember. Hi All

July was the driest month, since my records started.   Only 12.5mm, and 3 raindays, but also July's average min was by far my lowest at 7.16C.  The max average was up by 0.6 over the previous July at 19.98C.
Lowest min was 1.8. highest min was 14.3, Lowest max was 11.8, highest 23.9.
4 light frosts, 2 days less than 2.2C.  Rainfall for 2000 so far is 656.5mm

I have a members gallery on the Brisbane Storm Chasers site  http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/.  I've sent Ben some pics of the Guyra snowchase to scan.  I have alot more - 4 rolls of film.

Guyra hospital ( where they record temps etc) recorded 3/4 inches (7- 10cm) of snow. Though it was deeper in areas such as the lagoon, drains beside the roads.  Thanks Lauier for the compliement.  It was my first snow chase.

cheers
Sam

I have started using the board method (When I can) and whilst it takes effort to maintain this approach, I have found it a valuable tool, especially in observing differences to snow drift and snowfall. Anyone, feel free to contribute more to this subject as I wouldn't mind setting up a file with some standard procedures for measuring and observing snow to help folk on the list, including me! Perhaps I have been guilty of this too, but I have noticed reports in my region of "Very heavy snow" from some folk and yet to me, it didn't seem more than light to moderate albeit persistant snow, at the time. Can we discuss terms like "light", "moderate" and "heavy" and how they might be applied whilst observing snow or indeed other appropriate ways of describing snowfall? I understand that in America such terms can vary in meaning from region to region. Leslie R Lemon, is this true? The film certainly didn't exaggerate! Even I've seen est. 50+ footers in
relatively 'moderate' (45 knots sustained SW) conditions in Bass Strait - if
you are heading towards them the boat ( & you) freefall for what seems like
an eternity until you crash into the trough at the bottom. Not very pleasant
& very difficult to sleep!
I can back that up too. I crossed Bass straight in mid April 86 on the Abel Tasman. There was another ship following us out through the heads. When we were on top of the wave he was at the bottom, and in the dark it was awesome to watch. Even made more pleasant by hanging over the side with a few beers. <g> I remember it was very windy and I was flat out trying to stand in it and got soaked as well, but loved it.

Hey all,

After return home from work sick (got sent home) today I slept for a few hours only to wake up with a CB in my view out my window.....(yeah i thought i was dreaming too).

Some nice storms developed over the S end of Port Phillip Bay with some briefly reaching peak intensity on radar before weakening.  I got to use my new video camera for the first time :-).  After the storms had weakened the BoM decided to issue a garden variety thunderstorm warning for Metro Melbourne for later today.

Also of note is the Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the Riverina, Lower Western and Upper Western of NSW.

Just thought I'd let a few people know what we do on our sick days down here in Vic.....hehe

TTYL

Enjoy.

From: Blair Trewin Subject: aus-wx: Back on deck/California hailstorm To: aussie-weather at world.std.com (Aussie Weather) Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 15:21:16 +1000 (EST) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.5 PL2] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com I'm now back on the scene (currently ploughing through the small matter of 1647 e-mails!). Hopefully I'll be able to get round to replying to anything relevant in the next couple of days. My pursuit of interesting weather didn't stop in Scandinavia. Last Thursday (when I was walking in Yosemite National Park) there was a long succession of thunderstorms. Summer thunderstorms are not particularly uncommon in the Sierra Nevada, but most of them have no precipitation that reaches the ground (lightning strikes from such storms have been responsible for most of the fires in the news lately); August mean monthly rainfalls are typically in the 5-10mm range (with no California station that I could find topping 15). One of the storms started two small bushfires within a couple of kilometres of me (fortunately it wasn't windy), but it was a later one that really took the cake, starting with heavy rain and then developing into a sizeable hailstorm. The hail was not particularly large (1.5cm was about as big as it got), but there was enough for a fairly complete ground cover. (The hail also stopped me from doing the final ascent of Half Dome - this is basically a long walk but the last 300m or so is a climb up sloping granite, some of it with the help of cables. The rock became too slippery to climb on, especially as the spur you climb up is only a few metres wide and if you slip off it's a 1200- metre drop!). All this was interesting but not really exceptional. The exceptional bit came the next morning on leaving the park. It had been obvious looking from Half Dome that the storm had lingered over the higher elevations to the east, but just how it had lingered became stunningly obvious when I arrived at the visitor centre at Tuolumne Meadows (in the central eastern part of the park, north-east of the main valley and about 2600 metres in elevation) to see an almost 100% ground cover, almost 24 hours after the storm! At this point, there was probably an average cover of 2cm depth, with drifts of 5-10cm. It looked like snow (and most people thought it was snow), but individual hailstones were still visible. This amount of hail was remaining despite the fact that temperatures had been well above freezing throughout (probably down to 5-8 overnight, and up to the mid- to high teens by the time I arrived at about 10); the volume of hail that must have been deposited by the storm would have been phenomenal. Even in places which had been exposed to full sunlight for several hours ice remained on the ground. A notice on the board at the visitor centre said that they had recorded 2.5 inches (63.5mm) of rain, but I don't know if this was an official observation (Tuolumne Meadows doesn't appear in any of the station listings that I have). There was also a newspaper report of a tornado/waterspout at Lake Tahoe, about 200km to the north. I haven't seen any official confirmation of this. I will be following this one up further with my contacts in the US. I suspect that the volume of hail associated with this storm is extremely rare, perhaps even unprecedented, in California, which would make me feel a bit better about being caught underneath it whilst bushwalking :-). If my photos turn out and I can get access to a scanner I'll also try to get some posted on the web. The other interesting sidelight was the joy of listening to a metropolitan San Francisco Bay Area forecast on the radio; 'highs ranging from the mid-50s (13 C) near the ocean to near 100 (38 C) in the eastern valleys'. Makes the Sydney-Richmond contrast seem pretty tame....

TTYL

Enjoy.

But d'oh, Too much stratus covered to give us a poor view of lightning. So it wasn't good. The skies were very dark. We had very heavy rain and few lightning flashes. My weather station recorded rain rate up to 73mm/hr. Got 9.5mm from it. I also have video it of the storms with video camera. I enjoyed my morning. Hello all,
I just received word of a severe storm that has just caused damage to the north-western Victorian town of Sunbury. A basketball stadium was destroyed and a number of homes unroofed. There is very little information to go by, however, at this stage it appears that the phenomenon may fit the category of straight-line winds.

Well Melbourne has just had what I would described the most lightning active August storm I have ever seen. There were CG's, double CG's, an anvil crawler and some very loud boom thunder. Lightning was at a rate of better than 1 per 5 seconds at some stages. This is very unusual for Melbourne storms at this time of year when you usually get one bolt and that's it. This wasn't a cold air cell, this was more a summer type set-up, mild northerly winds and a trough moving in from the west. Some of the early development today made me think it was summer. A severe thunderstorm warning is still current for Melbourne as this cells moves through. There have been reports of damage, just caught the end of a story on the news, will give more info as it comes to hand. Here we go again........the ABC Melbourne have just mentioned the 'm' word - they said there had been a mini tornado in Sunbury that had torn the roof off the basketball stadium.
I just had a great hail shower go through at Boronia - 9 -10mm hail stones.
Lots of lightning & thunder - fantastic!
While trying to get some lightning pics the hail started & now I'm trying to clean up the dampness as I had the sliding door open at the time for the photos! :-)) Still stepping on hailstones!
What a great night!!!

A fantastic lightning show which, for me, began around 6pm when I woke from my nap. From my 11th storey, westward facing room I had a good show of the storm coming from the northwest, and was abled to shoot a couple rolls, with 2 shots in particular that should turn out to be pretty good, even if I do say so myself. At its best around 6:30pm, the storm produced lightning every few seconds. Here is an IR loop which shows this storm developing: http://www.maths.monash.edu.au/~robert/Weather/2000_08_08/IDO50V07.gif And what's more, the Bureau's lightning detector is still down as it did not register a hoot. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Evening all, Spent some time up on top of Mt Dandenong this evening with Chris Daley & Tiffany. We drove up during a great light show to the east, north & northwest & wonderful rolling thunder. Sat through the first storm with about 30 other cars (see it's not just us!!). No hail, but we watched the cloud twist & turn as it came up the side of the hill. Some of the showers over Melbourne at that time were so heavy that they totally blotted the lights out for short periods. We went down to the lookout of the eastern side, then to Montrose for pizza & back up the hill - listening to the aviation forecast on the phone, I was plotting the expected location of the front at 9pm (Hay to Fliki) when we had an enormous flash of lightning right overhead & a crash of thunder & then very heavy rain for 10 minutes or so....then nothing..... Down the hill and home to find that I'd had 7mm rain in the 2.5 hours I'd been gone & have subsequently had another 3.9mm in 30 minutes (see, cleaning your gutters does work!!!) when a 100+ went across. Thanks to Bussie, Macca, Daniel Weatherhead & (Matt Smith this afternoon) for the updates & radar & news reports - and it was great to meet Tiffany & Chris up there....oh, and Cadence enjoyed the show too! Hello all,
I just received word of a severe storm that has just caused damage to the north-western Victorian town of Sunbury. A basketball stadium was destroyed and a number of homes unroofed. There is very little information to go by, however, at this stage it appears that the phenomenon may fit the category of straight-line winds.

Nice to hear....but if Sunbury is north west west Vic then where am I???????   :)
