They do the same with Greek, Hebrew and other foreign languages. If you check the dictionaries (Macquarie - Australian or Oxford - British), they give either PILL-e-us or PILL-lay-us as the two allowable pronunciations with the accent always on the first syllable. IMHO the second version is given to try to accommodate the US pronunciation. Thus the preferred pronunciation sounds like "bilious" with a P. Must admit I enjoyed this film much more than expected. While it was riddled with American Clichés, the "wave" footage was very impressive, and it really got me thinking about how bad conditions could get at sea. BTW the National Geographic channel had a documentary last about the events surrounding this storm - about a 3.5 on the rating scale. What caught my attention were, the Sable Island (sp?) wave buoy measured a 30m wave with this storm! and that the rescue helicopter guy who died was in fact the first to jump from the helicopter (ie he wasn't trapped). The suspicion was that he landed in a wave trough and the extra ~100 feet of fall may have been enough to kill him outright. Cheers, David. I actually took a photo from my balcony towards the end of the Bledisloe Cop, of the large cumulus coming in from the sea, and thought quite a bit of going out to actually check for a spout. But, in the end, the phonecall to my girlfriend who has moved to NZ to work for a couple of years got the better of me. (Gloat, gloat, Wallabies win yeah!!) That would be a very BIG call indeed to be making in early August. The season normally runs until the 1st weekend in October - with an announcement 1 or 2 weeks beforehand if an extension (normally of a week or 2 at most) is likely. A lot of melting can happen between now and the end of September if things go wrong (which hopefully they won't). Also the snow conditions under the intense Australian sun in October can make conditions pretty slushy in the middle of the day - particularly for the lower resorts. So remaining open which can be expensive may not be profitable if the skiers don't like the conditions (and don't like paying $70+ for what could be mediocre skiing) and don't turn up. X-C skiers normally enjoy skiing on the main range around 2000m well into November and some years into December. (I have seen desperados practising their telemarks on lingering snow patches above Thredbo even in January - I don't think they use new skis at this time!!) Yes there is a very good cover at the moment... From the BoM web site: "SNOWY MOUNTAINS HYDRO-ELECTRICITY AUTHORITY SNOW DEPTH WEEKLY READINGS AS AT 3 August 2000 Spencers Creek (1830 m - out from Charlotte Pass) 174.7 cm Deep Creek (1620 m - SW of Cabramurra) 106.4 cm Three Mile Dam (1460 m - below Mt Selwyn) 21.7 cm" The maximum at Spencers Creek so far this year has been 189cm - the current warm spell (and settling of the base) has reduced the depth by 15cm. There is a big drop-off in snow depth between 1600m and 1500m. Some of the resorts have their lower runs at the bottom of this elevation range and the cover on these is getting a bit patchy (also thinning on some runs with strong northerly aspects). Higher up, the skiers are very happy and will be happier still once the coming series of fronts has topped up the cover and replaced any losses that are likely to occur from rain ahead of the 1st front tomorrow. The remarkable thing about this season is its length so far. The resorts have all been skiable since the May cold outbreak - often skiers are still hoping for the first substantial natural falls well into July and sometimes even August. I think the mathematical formula is that the accuracy of the report is directly inverse to the number of $$$ involved. The webcams on the snow fields have been an aid to accuracy of what conditions are actually like (Valley View at Thredbo being very useful for seeing the snow-line and melt across a 500m vertical range). Only problem is the tendency for some web-cams to malfunction during rainy periods or times of poor cover - I'm sure this is mere coincidence however..... ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [141.132.131.201] From: "Leslie Baxter" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Tonight's Weather, CFs on the way! This moisture has again built up and is causing some development in W NSW and Victoria. Tomorrow I expect from the models to be a great day for chasing in those areas. It seems though that timing and the amount of moisture will determine whether Sydney will get a fair does of some of this weather. There is a circulation just SW of Victoria. The jet at 300hPa is nicely curved and will therefore provide for excellent wind shear. There is good directional wind shear in Central NSW as well with NNE winds expected around the circulation. I think this provides for an excellent storm chasing situation. I wouldn't be surprised to see supercells tomorrow. Well that is my bet. What sort of amplitude would we be talking here? So they weren't exaggerating in the movie? I wondered if some of those waves were stretching the imagination just a little bit...... What's the largest recorded wave on the Australian mainland, anything like that or isn't the fetch long enough to generate waves that size? I probably shouldn't ask this question , but is there a methematical model for wave size as a function of length of fetch & other things?
