I used to work with a guy who loves thickness (hmmm, this statement is just too inviting). Thickness gives you the height difference between two pressure surfaces at a given location. A 1000-500 mb thickness of 5400 metres means that the 1000mb and the 500mb surfaces are 5400 metres apart. So what??, you ask. "It has been shown" that thickness is a measure of the *average* layer temperature (THICK ~ 20*Avg.T). A 1000-5000mb thickness of 5400 m then translates into an average 1000->500mb layer temperature of 5400/20 K = 270 K (-3 deg. Celsius), characteristic of a wintertime airmass over southern Australia. In Melbourne I went by the rule of thumb that 5400m meant +12 C on the ground and snow in the mountains. How can it be >raining and snowing at the same time?? How come the rain doesn't >freeze?????? Hi Desley, As a Canberra-ite where the rain/snow combination is not unusual (personally I would prefer more snow, less rain if it is going to be cold anyway), I thought I would attempt an answer. The temperature at which snow turns to rain (or the other way around) is usually a couple of degrees above freezing - depending on humidity levels (the drier the air, the higher the temperature can be and still allow snow to fall as evaporation from the snowflake into a drier air cools and slows the melting of the snowflake). In very dry air, snow can fall at temperatures as high as +6 - this may have happened in the observed snow fall event at Uluru a couple of years ago. Dr David Jones and others on the list have posted the mathematical equations that assist in calculating the snow temperature for different levels of humidity. As snow falls into warmer levels of the atmosphere, the melting process is not instantaneous - but happens along a continuum until the melting is complete. As the outer levels of the snow flake melt a little, they become sticky (a bit like wet sand as opposed to dry sand) and will stick to other snow flakes (or anything else they touch). So at around +1 or +2 degrees, you often see very large snow flakes falling - they are in fact clumps of slightly melted snow flakes. Snow that reaches the surface at these slightly above freezing temperatures will often stick to everything from all sides (ie the under-surfaces of tree branches, letter boxes as well as the top surfaces) and this looks very pretty. Dry snow (below freezing) will just fall off a non-level surface rather than stick to it. As the snow flakes fall through progressively higher temperatures, the smaller flakes will melt first and become raindrops whilst the bigger flakes hang on longer. This is where you get the snow-rain mix (often the temp will be between 2-4 degrees). As the temperature rises further still, the mix becomes increasingly of rain rather than snow until eventually it is all liquid. The last remnants of melted snow (or conversely the first sign that rain is possibly going to turn into snow) is often seen on car windscreens as raindrops containing little soft balls of ice that melt within seconds of hitting the windscreen. It interesting to watch the transition process if there is precipitation and you are in a car which is gaining or losing altitude. A vertical change of 100-200m can result in a total change in precipitation type (and the appearance of the landscape). >>What is Sleet - if it isn't slushy rain???? In Australia (and the UK) sleet is that mix of slushy rain/partially melted snow. In the US, I think the term sleet applies to frozen rain pellets (ie rain falling from a warm mid-atmosphere into a very cold layer of air near the surface (cold enough to freeze the rain before hitting the surface). As the American land-mass at low elevations gets much colder than the Australian land-mass, this phenomenon is far more common in the US than in Australia (where it would be pretty unusual. Although I have occasionally observed this briefly happening in Canberra under very strong inversions, surface temps well below freezing and a weak - generally decaying - NW middle level cloudband moving above the inversion layer). >I have never seen snow falling and am fascinated by extreme cold >conditions...I was watching a show about Russia on TV last night and they >showed a Lake with water temperature at -2 degrees actually with mist all >over it, as the air temperature was -30 ........unbelievable......does that >mean that it was actually steam coming off the water as it was so much >warmer relatively than the air?????? This is a common winter occurrence over Lake Burley Griffin (the infamous Canberra fogs only too well known by air travellers!!) although the water temp would be around +5 and the air temps around -5 to -7. It is indeed steam with supercooled (ie temp below freezing) water droplets. Again, I have occasionally heard local reports of "snow" falling in very thick and deep fogs (up to 500m-1000m in vertical height) where the temps are well below freezing. Presumably in such conditions there may be some freezing of the supercooled droplets and enough bouyancy within this shallow layer to allow some very small crystals to grow to observable albeit small snowflake size. If some of the models are right - SE Aust should be in for some more interesting cold weather early-mid next week. According to the Macquarie Dictionary, 2nd edition, page 1291:
pileus / 'pailies, 'pilies/, n., pl. pilei /'pailiai/  , 1. Bot. the horizontal portion of a mushroom, bearing gills tubes, etc., on its underside; a cap. 2. Zool. the disc-shaped part of a coelenterate which takes the form of a medusa.  [L, more correctly pilleus, also pilleum felt cap; akin to L pilus hair, Gk pilos felt, felt cap]

So the two pronunciations given are Clyve's "PILE eeus" and the alternative "PILL eeus".
Note that the Macquarie hasn't caught up with any reference to clouds.

It will probably need repeating at regular intervals as others join the list. I don't know about everybody else, but I am on more than one list and WX-TROPL frequently sends 100 or more in a day at busy times as well. I certainly don't find the time to read every word of every e-mail, so do a lot of choosing from the subject line alone, possibly missing out on some very interesting discussions when somebody hits "reply" and raises a new subject without changing the subject line. I have to admit I am lazy enough to be guilty of this one myself at times, although it is usually a discussion of some point within the original subject. As for location, I have set up an automatic signature which tells everyone I am in Hong Kong. Recommend everyone does likewise if your e-mail programs can handle it. I can't wait till storm season, we have collected quite a few new resources over the past 6 months... when i first started using the net for weather/storms in September/October 1998 it all seemed very basic - BOM forecasts and a couple of different sat pics... but now we have sat pics coming out of our clackers, people are issuing forecasts for their local area themselves and we can even come home from a chase and see all the data for the day thanks to archives like yours ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick Sykes" To: Sent: Saturday, August 05, 2000 4:06 PM Subject: aus-wx: WA satellite animation and archive > Hey All > > I have just finished a new satellite animation, this one covers the SW of > WA.
