Feel free to take the ball and run with it. OK. I picked up the ball. My first reaction is that my grandma's guess of the Blue Mountains "weather in October" (ugh) is probably better than mine. I reckon the atmosphere is not deterministic enough beyond 10 days or so. BUT: *maybe* a few features of the atmosphere/ocean system are deterministic enough to be of some use. A very stable atmospheric blocking pattern might give you a decent shot at a useful 7-day forecast. In the middle of the Simpson desert your rain forecasts can have impressive skill. Statistical studies claim to correlate slow-varying features (SSTs) with more chaotic features (rain) in a useful manner. I am not (yet) a believer that any useful statement about the weather in the Blue Mountains in October can be made, but I'd love to hear that there is evidence to the contrary. Hey Everyone.

Well it looks like being another interesting day in Sydney after a great lightning display last night.
On the mountains there is a very nice, and very big  CB, the first spring type CB i have seen in a long time (since last spring duh!) There heaps of congestus everywhere, two very crisp looking updrafts to my south and south-east. I am at cranebrook at the moment so i would think the SE cell would be somewhere over Camden-Appin area. There is also lots of congestus all along the ranges. This is great development at 1pm and hopefully we get something out of this.

My brother-in-law is a Commercial Pilot based in Townsville. Last year he was flying when a ball of light came straight for him, horizontally, and actually struck the aircraft under the cockpit. David literally felt something strike under his feet. Obviously he got a Hell of a fright, as did his co-pilot. When he landed there was no damage to the aircraft, from what I remember, and I don't believe that there were any obvious storm fronts anywhere in his vicinity either. I have a Weather Calendar that features one of the only photographs available of ball lightning, and I when I mailed it to him, he confirmed that this described what he had seen. However he saw no other lightning at the time. He was most relieved to be able to show fellow pilots and other family members something that perhaps verified, and possibly explained what he had experienced. Does this sound like another instance of Ball Lightning to all of you? PS. I don't believe that his control of the aircraft, or communications were drastically affected either. By the way - it has been really cold up here...down to....wait for it.....TEN degrees early one morning!!!!!!! We have been needing our Doona as most nights it gets down to a chilly 14 ot 15 degrees. Yeah well that is cold when you live up here.......lol.... Question from a Snow-challenged Far North Queenslander? How can it be raining and snowing at the same time?? How come the rain doesn't freeze?????? What is Sleet - if it isn't slushy rain???? Feel sorry for me...I have never seen snow falling and am fascinated by extreme cold conditions...I was watching a show about Russia on TV last night and they showed a Lake with water temperature at -2 degrees actually with mist all over it, as the air temperature was -30 ........unbelievable......does that mean that it was actually steam coming off the water as it was so much warmer relatively than the air?????? Are these stupid questions????? Never mind........consider I am laying awake deliberating over wintery questions - while we wait for our Cyclone/Wet Season. Thanks Desley in Cairns. -----Original Message----- From: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com [mailto:aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com]On Behalf Of Phil Smith Sent: Wednesday, 2 August 2000 9:12 AM To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Strange lightning static on Radio Yes, I agree with Les - the cause of the loud "motorbike" static is ball lightning which follows the stroke. There are obviously more complex reasons aswell which you'll find briefly discussed in Patrick Tobin's post from yesterday morning. Andrew. But, is it possible that what is being heard after the strike is the remanent charge from the original strike tracer. As I said, I'm no expert, but it would seem to me that the stronger the strike, the longer it would take for the charge to leave the tracer and at the same time, the closer the observer is to the strike the more noticeable the effect would be. Either that, or it is some type of EMP effect, although that is what the initial static heard on the radio is the EMP of the strike. When I was at still living at my parents place it usually corresponded with strikes that set off the front door bell. I've never been sure what was actually causing this to happen - the vibration resulting from the strike causing the contacts on the bell to touch, or arcing across the contacts. Ball lightning. A rare form, known as ball lightning, occurs when some of the charge from a cloud-to-ground strike forms a small, round ball. This ball of light may roll along the ground or climb objects until it either explodes or dissipates. Sometimes when the build up of opposite charges is insufficient for a lightning bolt to form, a mass of sparks appears high above the ground in the vicinity of the thunderstorm. This phenomenon was first noted at the top of ships masts and was subsequently named St.Elmo's fire, after the patron saint of sailors. I "need" to see this....... Hope this helps. There is no evidence that it was such a thing, unless the ball lighting was actually seen. My idea is that at some point the lightning strike had made contact with the water, maybe this was obscured by rain, or something, or would it be possible that you had some sort of interference from a nearby source, which just happened to start at the same time as the lightning. You might want to try and go back to the area and set up everything the way you had it that night, same frequency as well, and just listen and see if you can hear the same noise.
