Occurs throughout most of mainland Australia and locally common, tends to congregate in flocks particularly in agricultural areas - the bane of many a grain farmer! Like all Australian parrots they are totally protected and export is illegal. Thus they are highly prized overseas, a breeding pair can fetch $US40,000. Galah's are popular caged birds in Australia. They can be easily taught to imitate sounds and the human voice. Behaviour is comical on the perch and flight sometimes erratic - hence popular slang for someone behaving stupidly. As in... Hey everyone,

I've just been doing some thinking and reminiscing of the beginning of Thunder Down Under 1999.  For those who are new to the list or don't know about it, it was a two week long storm chase covering wherever the storms took us in the eastern half of Australia.  There were 6 Victorians, 5 NSW'ians and 3 Queenslanders in 7 cars racing around the countryside chasing storms.  The chase started in Victoria.  4 of us in two separate cars left on a Friday morning not knowing quite what to expect. We were fairly well equipped with a hand-held weather station and CB radios in both cars.  We were 4 relatively inexperienced chasers from Victoria of all places - well known for having a lot less severe storms than NSW and QLD. We were entering a whole new level of chasing by heading N into the jaws of CAPE in excess of 1500j/kg and LI's consistently below -4.  The first day was fairly cloud free although there was a slight chance of a late afternoon weak storm in Victoria on the eastern ranges.  This wasn't what we were chasing for though.  We were after the best storms possible in the eastern half of Australia and if this meant leaving behind a weak storm and having a day of driving to get ourselves in a good position for the next day then so be it.  We suffered all through the first day with blue sky and sub-zero dewpoints at times.  By the time we had reached our overnight stopping point at Dubbo the dewpoint had climbed to a mammoth 5.5C.  The next day we really didn't know what to expect.  We'd seen charts with CAPE up to 1800j/kg and LI's down to -5 about 300km N of Dubbo.  This was to be our target for the day.  After driving through strato cumulus all morning we finally broke through into sunshine and what had to be 1000+j/kg CAPE's with TCu so rock hard I thought it was heaven.  Just before reaching Bourke for the first time on this trip a few showers came into view.  One straight up the road ahead of us and another off to the NW which looked more promising.  All of a sudden Paul Yole was screaming at me and the driver over the CB radio.  All we heard was "CG, CG, CG".  I felt shivers race up and down my spine as our eyes both turned to look at this shower turned thunderstorm in front of us.  It was far from impressive but we watched as it began to regularly produce CG's out of the S and W side of it.  This one, showery looking storm had just produced more lightning in 15 minutes than I had seen in the last 8 months.  I began to think....."what can we expect if we come across a supercell on this trip....what's it going to be like if this is what a thundery shower can do".  The feeling was nothing short of awesome knowing that this trip was only going to get better and better.  For us Victorians this was going to be the treat of all treats in terms of storm chases.  This day yielded flash flooding and severe lightning and this was just the second day of a two week long chase.

I guess being from Victoria means that we do not get to see this sort of thing on anywhere near as a regular basis as those in NSW and QLD and hence the excitement and absolute awe of such mediocre storms compared to what can happen out there.  I will never forget listening to the first rumble of thunder out on the western plains of NSW near Bourke.  It was the deepest and longest rumble of all time which I first thought must've been an earthquake - it was just awesome.  I don't know if its the fact that the storms are bigger, taller and stronger out there but whatever it was it made me feel lucky to be a Victorian.  I feel I was able to appreciate the storms much more by being deprived of such weather for months and months on end and then weeks and weeks on end even in the storm season.  I feel that Australians in general would also attain this appreciation of the storms in the US due to the same reason in that we encounter supercells on a far less regular basis than our US counterparts.

As it turns out, 4 Victorians, 2 NSW'ians and 3 QLD'ers were lucky enough to encounter one of these majestic supercells and mother nature shone on us that day and gave us a brief viewing of what we are all out there to ultimately see - a tornado!!!  We watched the supercell approach us from the W with a spectacular gust front and frightening lightning which set the power lines humming before each big strike.  Then after watching this cell for almost an hour, there is was.  The short-lived F-0 tornado.  It soon dissipated and before long we were given a hearty reminder of the need to be safety conscious as the guster raced towards us at close to 100km/h, picking up dust from a recently ploughed field and hurling it at us at full pelt.........

Anyway - enough from me reminiscing and declaring how fortunate we all are to live in such a fantastic country in which we can all literally chase our dreams of monstrous storms with giant hail and tornadoes.

To read the rest of the Thunder Down Under Chase Report and to see some of the photos check it out here:

While I admit it is only 8 of the 17 days we were gone, there were 6 storm days in the first 8 days so its well worth the read.  I may eventually get around to writing about the other 9 days - there will be no problems remembering what happened as it is so deeply etched in my memory that I am likely to never forget "The Big Chase".  I hope you can all enjoy it as much as we did by being on the actual chase.

Enjoy!!!

There is always the chance that they make recordings, which are not forwarded to BOM but I could not find mention of these on their site (http://www.snowyhydro.com.au/). There is, however, rainfall data taken at Jindabyne (Lynwood, alt. 1030m), which is avaliable freely on www.bom.gov.au in near real time. For weather, I would be inclined to use Cooma Ap. which is climatologically very similar to Jindabyne (alt. 930m), and lies "about" half way between Jindabyne and Cooma. The Cooma Ap. obs are avaliable in real time continuous, being an AWS, and are probably more informative and interesting than Jindabyne observations which would seem to me to be very location specific, due to the intense local gradients in rainfall/temperature. Another, interesting site, of course, is Tumbarumba (alt. 645m), on the western side of the divide, which provides an amazing contrast to Cooma Ap. Cheers, David. I do know what you mean about appreciating storms more from Victoria rather then most people from NSW and QLD do. I used to be very fussy with my storms, and any weather event - it's wasn't until a combination of two events (first is our non-existant storm season, and the second was learning from the Vic's on TDU99 :) that I learnt how lucky I am to live in SE QLD. As they say, it's not until you don't have something, that you realise how much you miss it/how lucky you were in the first place. I believe that you can categorise most people into four categories: Tornado Chasers Severe Storm Chasers Storm Chasers Weather Chasers All are fairly explanatory, tornado chasers are dissappointed if they don't get a tornado. Severe storm chasers consider it a bust unless their storm is severe or visually spectacular. Storm chasers are just happy with any sort of storm. And weather chasers are just that, they "chase" anything from sunsets to rainbows, dust devils to tornadoes, showers to storms, Cu to Cb's. I've certainly learnt a heck of a lot more since whenever I have an opportunity to, if there's something remotely interesting, I'll go out and 'chase' it. No doubt though, everyone has their different priorities and that's their choice. I think the other thing that was great with TDU99 was the friendships everyone made, and how well everyone got on with each other! G'day all
I've been looking at the MRF models, and other forecast/predictions from other people.  I would n't be surpised this time that Guyra will have better falls of snow.  However, back in the May outbreak the New England highway was closed between Armidale and Guyra due to ice/snow.  My source was from the radio station 2AD and the Ampol at Guyra.   So the highway should be closed again - maybe for a day( or two).!

Anyway, thankyou Don for replying to my email.  G'day to Lindsay, how's it in your area today?
cheers

HI EVERYBODY
Very nice comma shape near south west Vic this morning have to agree one of the best cold airmass sat pics for some time . The cold air field looks to be heading inland across SA towards NSW . We may see the coldest air spiral around the developing low just south of Vic this morning. Should still see some good cold cbs and plenty of highland snow over south east AUS with some of the white stuff getting down to 300 to 500 m over the next 24hours

Indeed this is only a shower, but it unseasonally warm here. It was 24C here yesterday afternoon and was 21C at 11pm. It seems like a sping day, and a gentle NE breeze here is welcome also.

As a boy my first encounter with using birds as a weather tool was on my uncles farm. he used to say if you saw a crow fly backwards its going to be windy, so after that i thought maybe using birds as a weather tool might be a possibility. The best place for weather bird analysis is at the beach and seagulls are tops for weather indications .... example when seagulls sit on the ground head down ass up expect a strong wind gust , i noticed that these birds are also aware of eddy wind vorticity because sometimes you could see them with head down ass down these birds could anticipate the swirling flow around them in this position therefore avoiding cold drafts up their backside also these birds would rear up head high ass down in this position the birds were looking around to see how the weather was going indicating they are weatherwise! but be careful seagulls are very lazy birds and during a lull can be seen fluttering several meters above ground with head high and ass pointed down in this position duck for cover........... peep peep regards just for fun Clyve H ----- Original Message ----- From: Leslie Baxter To: Sent: Tuesday, July 25, 2000 8:44 AM Subject: Re: aus-wx: bird conspiracy > > Stop talking shit about birds ok, if you want to talk about birds, you > should have subscribed to the birds mailing list, weather people weather!!! > Birds, phucking unbelievable. > > Get back on topic would yaz! > ________________________________________________________________________ > Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com > > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ > To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com > with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your > message. > -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "clyve herbert" To: "clyve herbert" , Subject: Re: aus-wx: Stunning SA satpic Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 22:01:22 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com

Like Anthony, I'm happy to get the newspaper, a good cup of coffee, a chocolate bar & a comfortable chair & spend the next 4 hours sitting in a paddock just watching - not necessarily doing anything else, but just watching and learning about the atmospheric processes at work. I tend to spend any spare minutes I have during the day on top of the hill 5 minutes from work just having a look at what's going on - I take the scenic route if I go to the bank because it gives me a clear view to the S round to the NE. If there's anything worth getting excited about I can be found on the roof with the camera and the video. (and I know that Andrew & Claire McDonald have been getting on their roof for years & scaring the neighbours!!!) I've been known to take a detour and drive home via Seymour & Yea (that's only 250kms further than the usual 26kms - but I did it 2 afternoons in a row in February as Anthony will attest), or via Drouin if there's anything remotely interesting to be seen - you may think I'm totally crazy (nothing new there) - but the amount that I have learnt while doing this sort of thing is invaluable.....and you train yourself to notice features which to others may appear totally insignificant, but which may actually be the precursor to something happening a little later on. Watch, watch & watch some more...learn the patterns of your local area, then go and learn the patterns for somewhere else, look upstream, look downstream, talk to people about the forecasts, theorise, analyse, talk to people more, discuss, watch, talk, read, think & don't ever stop learning!!!...and then as Anthony said - be amazed at how many people there are out there...just like you!!!! and enjoy the friendships that develop as part of this amazing weather process. It also made me go outside and well.... spring is surely on the way. Although there are no guarantees insofar as what sort of a chase season it will be, the wait is half the fun. As far as Anthony's categories go, I am definitely of the storm chaser variety; I love thunderstorms severe or not. Nevertheless, anyone who did see me out in the field last year (ie 99/00) could be excused for thinking otherwise. Notable examples include; 6 complete and utter busts around Sydney and the Hunter (and I'll drag Paul Graham down with me here; sorry Paul!); a dryline bust on Sydney's southwest outskirts - definitely Jimmy's fault ;-) - and a 1 week king-of-busts (4/6/00 - 10-6/00) taking in such US states as Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa. Still, my two most memorable storms of the 99/00 season were just that and didn't even require a chase:- (i) the 6:00 pm 22/9/99 Sydney severe storm (there were few others during the afternoon / evening); a simply 'beautiful' storm with great colour (thanks to the setting sun), powerful updrafts and 4cm hail. (ii) 1/10/99 - another severe storm which moved through Sydney with a quite spectacular gust front, chunky lowerings and intense CGs at close range. The rest of the season I'm glad to say is history.... ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "MSC - Jane ONeill" To: "Aussie Weather" Subject: aus-wx: Victorian low Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 13:49:08 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2910.0) Importance: Normal Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com A low of 998 analysed sitting over the SW corner of the state at 10am, pressure in Melbourne atm is 1000hPa, temperature 11.8C, wind still out of the NNE. Hi All

NW winds are light to moderate at times.  Rather warm today, had a min 6.9, and the temp at the moment is currently  23.0 and 24.9 in my room - getting a little hot to study.  Although the weather at the monent is a even larger distraction.  I hope we get that T Storm for Wednesday - still only 4mm for this month.  Though the min average for this month should be lowest since I've start taking readings.
cheers

I just heard on the radio that the bureau is forecasting a storm this afternoon, in SE-QLD? Had a look at the Energex Lightning tracker, but there is no sign of it there. I'm just look for a webcam near Towoomba now, so I will see if I can see anything on that. Anyone seen any sign of a storm?

I've had a look on all the webcams from Coolangatta to Noosa and out to Oakey and the sky is perfectly clear on all of them. No warnings from the bureau yet, so it looks like the storm isn't going to happen today.

I'm not quite as confident as the BoM are, I have a feeling the cold air might lag behind the SW wind change, so by the time the cold and coldest air comes through, it'll be too dry for storms. Lets hope I'm wrong though! There are some showers near Moree on radar, but nothing overly substantial. Mind you, that NE'ly is nice, and it'll get into the mid 20's tomorrow. After an almost cloudless late afternoon I can see the line of clouds clearly to the west. Question is will anything survive the ride over the escarpment. There also appears a line of thunder activity from perhaps the upper Hunter right back to Walgett.

I can vouch for that. I'm in Rutherglen, 40km west of Wodonga. Heavy rain all around but missed here. Very small hail about 4pm and 1mm of rain. At 4.30pm heavy rain was chasing the Murray river (north of here) and more to the south possibly around Wangaratta. One very heavy downpour noted in the South of here in the mountains somewhere about 4pm. I can clearly see from here to Wodonga region and it looked very heavy. As did Wangaratta direction.

So I went to the doctors and I don't know what came of me!!! Due to the amount of waiting time, my mind begins to think. If I have time of which I should do, make it two days. I went in there and tried to hint that passing on the sickness is not a good thing... He said" Let me check you out first".. Oh shit... Well there was no worries about my sickness as I did have the flu. Obviously his advice would have been to take a couple of days to rest....... I think he thought I was faking but he noticed I was quite affected. Well I had to make sure I walked out of the place in an orderly fashion. The excitement was getting too much. Now guys, I have not taken a days off work in 4 years and that was one day. Well this will be two days well timed I hope. If there are others who might feel a little dazed or ill. About 10 min ago, lightning and thunder in Bathurst, saw flash through window, 2 seconds later thunder.  Very close indeed.  Rain has got alot heavier than earlier this afternoon..

Was just talking with Jimmy, he has good rain happening at his place.

Radar shows nice storm near Richmond.
