And then 15 minutes later, we had high wind and driving heavy rain last for about 10 to 15 minutes. I looked thru windows and look like we were under the cyclone. Earlier, I saw nice squall line on radar and look incredible so I went outside and saw few crawling lightning to the South. So it was an exciting night. >From Nathan Thompson. Wyndham over 80 mm and Launceston's + 60 mm must be near daily records for July down there. don White > Karratha Weather wrote: > > Hey all just going thru some current metars for the wild weather in SE > Oz > check this one out........ > MOUNT HOTHAM (YHOT) > SPECI YHOT 1645Z 32022G82KT //// 01/00 Q1004 RMK RF00.2/001.0 > > MOUNT HOTHAM (YHOT) > SPECI YHOT 1705Z 33018G65KT //// 00/M00 Q1003 RMK RF00.0/001.2 > > Gusting to 82knots !? at #$ > Jeez thats Cyclone force!!! :) > can anyone confirm if this is correct ? > there seems to be a BIG difference in the mean and gusting wind > speeds... > > Regards > JJ > > www.karrathaweather.org > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: paisley at mail.cobweb.com.au Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 08:08:01 +0930 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Phil Bagust Subject: Re: aus-wx: SA report Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all Seems to be quite a lot of damage reports in the south of the state this morning. Hi
I have just joined the list (digest option).  I live in the Gold Coast hinterland.  Only had 4mm for this month.  Lowest temp for this month 1.8C, and this morning 6.2C, and there is currently high cloud about - the sun is trying to come out.

I was wondering if there is any frontal system next week, which may bring snow to the central/northern tablelands.  Guyra had only 3cm in June/May outbreak, though it broke a record for May 4.4C (new record 3.5C) - very dry for June only 16mm.
cheers
Sam

A very strong gust at around 4pm, maybe before that, hit my place and just picked up some decent size terracotta pots and smashed them to bits as well as sending our garden furniture 50 feet across the yard and up against the opposite fence. It usually takes gusts around 100 kph to do this in our yard as we are somewhat protected, so, that's my guess at wind speed. The very slow movement and absolute intensity of the system in May made it one of the most impressive cold outbreaks seen in SE Australia in the last century (quoted as a one in 30 year event by a bureau spokeperson). Many areas saw low land snow and some areas saw sub 300m snow showers. The alps recorded a metre of snow and after speaking to some well-seasoned ski enthusiats it was the driest snow they had ever seen (powder) (once it settled/compacted the depth decreased to about 85cm). Significant snowfalls (30cm+) were recorded as low as 500m causing hundreds of trees to snap/fall over due to the weight of the snow and hence causing the closure of many roads leading to the elevated areas. Hailshowers and thunderstorms dumped inches of hail in some areas of Melbourne and record lowest daily temperatures were recorded in many stations throughout E Australia. These are a few of the amazing facts from the mammoth cold outbreak in May which I believe will be very hard to beat for several years. The fact that it happened so early in the season is a little unfortunate as it seems to have set the benchmark for all cold outbreaks since then. Last year and the year before we were getting excited by forecast thickness of 535 and the possibility of 25cm of fresh snow on the alps. This year we now see a 25cm "dump" and 535 thickness as being tame compared to what will be known as "the big cold outbreak of 2000". I guess the point I'm making is that having such a significant event somewhat spoils the rest of the season. But not for me. I am still excited about the prospect of a nice icy blast from the SW even if it won't go close to the may outbreak. I think this can be carried over to thunderstorms as well. Last storm season the Victorians were given a treat fairly early in the season with -7 LI's and CAPE of 2000+j/kg on October 10th. Now this event had the potential to "spoil" us for the season and we did not have another day like that for the entire season. This didn't phase me. I was out there on days of +3 LI's and 150j/kg CAPE (with Jane out near Bacchus Marsh) and another day of +1 LI's with James Harris and was still excited by weather a lot less explosive than the great day in October. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the big events are not everything. While they are fantastic to be involved in I think its also important to be involved in the other end of the spectrum. You can learn a lot from the quieter days so that when the big, one in 30 year events come around, you appreciate them a lot more and you can apply all that you've learnt a lot better. I think there is a prime example of a Brisbane Storm Chaser who throughout the autumn and winter spends hours chasing what's known to the Brisbanites as "coastal showers". I've spoken to him on many occasions and each time he returns he is so happy you would expect him to have seen several tornadic supercells. I think its fantastic that we can all enjoy the less significant events - as i mentioned earlier it allows us to appreciate those days where we are treated to a show from mother nature that is fit for a king. Enough from me.
