The temperature is considerably higher this morning at 8.30 than it was at this time yesterday or even at 7pm last night, and the wind is out of the NNW ............... BTW, has anyone noticed the incredibly deep low at latitude ~55 S which might actually punch through the 950hPa barrier!!!! Even though it's moving SE it's an incredibly low pressure for this part of the world & has to be getting close to breaking some sort of record. Does anyone know (in Blair's absence) the extremes of pressure for the Southern Ocean? I know that mid latitude systems in the North Atlantic have reached as low as 916hPA, but these are usually associated with explosive deepening over the Gulf Stream - unfortunately we don't have a mechanism like this ... would this be why Southern Ocean depressions rarely fall below 940? Can anyone shed any light for me? According to the experts, this tornado can be classified F2 (with winds in the range of 181 and 251 km/h). Keep in mind that the low sections of the Parmesan region is subject to a high risk of such storms: in the last 12 months four tornadoes have occured in this territory. Unfortunately there is not much meteorological information, but the damage totals seem quite substantial. The brief report follows: Tornado kills 11 in China This brick building is one of thousands destroyed by the tornado. (ABC) The Chinese province of Jiangsu faces a major clean-up, after a tornado touched down there, reportedly killing 11 people and injuring 500 others. The twister touched down Thursday afternoon in the cities of Yangzhou and Taizhou, located 215 miles southwest of Shanghai. It destroyed 10,000 houses, uprooted large trees and disrupted electricity and communication systems, according to Chinese media. In addition, the tornado hit rice and corn fields, causing more than 4-million yuan in damage, according to the official Xinhua news agency. Anyone with particular views on the Bureau's data policies should take note of the last paragraph. ____________________________________________________ The Bureau of Meteorology has issued broad guidelines (or "Generic Definitions") for its Basic Product Set (BPS). These define what products, including forecasts and data, that the Bureau will provide to the public free of charge through the media and its own internet site. A copy of the guidelines is at http://ausweather.simplenet.com/temp/BPS.html. The BPS is to be implemented from 1 August, and details of exactly what products will be available are to be made available over the next few weeks. Because the "Generic Definitions" are just that, it remains to be seen from the detail just what the Bureau will be offering for free and what products and services it will place a charge on. The BPS guidelines do, however, include radar as a freely available service. Radar has been available over the internet only on subscription since it was introduced about 2 years ago. The Bureau's Acting Assistant Director (Services), Bob Wright, said "Changes to actual products and services as a consequence of the BPS being defined (e.g. radar data availability) are under way; it may not be possible to complete all the necessary work by the implementation date, but all practicable urgency will be given to this task. "The Basic Product Set will be reviewed annually by the Bureau's Deputy Director (Services) and the Assistant Director (Services), on the advice of a Basic Product Set Advisory Committee, consisting of the senior managers of the Bureau's weather, climate and hydrological service programs. Final approval of changes will be given by the Director of Meteorology. Public input is invited to this review process, and written submissions should be addressed to the Assistant Director (Services) in the Bureau's Head Office at GPO Box 1289K, Melbourne VIC 3001, fax (03) 9669 4695 or on e-mail ads at bom.gov.au" -- Laurier Williams Australian Weather News & Links http://ausweather.simplenet.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: paulmoss at tpgi.com.au To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2000 22:13:30 +0930 Subject: Re: aus-wx: Low pressure pressures X-mailer: Pegasus Mail for Win32 (v3.12a) Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Typhoon Tip has had the lowest pressure ever - 870 HPa. - October 1979 in the Pacific Ocean west of Guam.
