For example yesterday morning at 8am the Temp was 24C with 100% relative humidity - very unusual this time of year. Yesterday was 31C with Humnidity of 61% which is reasonably sticky compared to the normal 40% & less that the Dry normally has. Seems more like there may be a mid level Low?? assoc with a trough - and looking at the recent satpic animation seems that the Low may have moved offshore central / Northern NSW causing the storms that MB is hearing......... Maybe Laurier & co. could comment? Just my 2c worth from a dry dry dry but gorgeous Darwin day.......... but bloody boring! hehehe Paul in Darwin. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: Harald Richter Subject: RE: aus-wx: setup for recent NE NSW/ SE QLD storms (fwd) To: aussie-weather at world.std.com (Australian Severe Weather Association) Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 12:31:43 -0500 (CDT) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.5 PL3] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all: PID (Paul in Darwin) wrote: > I would agree with Michael B on this one - the "whole of weather" > pattern doesnt seem like a front - seems that the trough is drawing > some instablity from North - for example the weather here recently > has been very Wet season with high humidity throughout and fogs!! I am looking at the 11 July 2000 16 UTC setup for the NSW/QLD coastline here. The 12 UTC BOM manual surface analysis has an offshore low (~ 1004 hPa) analysed. The MSL anaysis of the low contains no fronts. That per se does not mean that there are no fronts, as there are also insufficient in situ surface data to analyse a front over the ocean. All we have in terms of in situ data is the surface data over land. The raw 16 UTC surface obs show fairly uniform westerlies along the NSW/QLD coast (no wind shift line). The surface pressure gradient points due west, so the lowest pressure is right along the coast (~ 1014 hPa). There is a decent EW temperature gradient between the higher terrain (~ 0 C) and the coastline (~ 12 C) which correlates with a somewhat weaker dewpoint gradient. The coastal moisture might trap more outgoing longwave radiation and prevent radiational cooling. In other words, the temperature gradient is not the result of some deformation/convergence/flow feature associated with the flow around the offshore low, and I would not call it a front. A surface front is not a necessary ingredient for convection. The 23 UTC sounding (10 Jul) at Brisbane shows some very steep lapse rates up to 500 hPa (with - 26 C just below 500 hPa). Maybe orographic lifting got the parcels up to their level of free convection where they took off like lightning with those steep lapse rates. > Seems more like there may be a mid level Low?? assoc with a trough - > and looking at the recent satpic animation seems that the Low may > have moved offshore central / Northern NSW causing the storms that MB > is hearing Yep. I think the low provided that cool air aloft. > Just my 2c worth from a dry dry dry but gorgeous Darwin day.......... > but bloody boring! hehehe You have a capping inversion from hell (or from High) on top of your boundary layer, nothing a surface temperature of 55 C couldn't fix :) Under just another capping inversion, Harald -- ------------------------------------------- Harald Richter NOAA/National Severe Storms Laboratory 1313 Halley Circle Norman, OK 73069, U.S.A. ph.: (405) 366-0430 fax: (405) 579-0808 email: hrichter at enterprise.nssl.noaa.gov web: http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/~hrichter ------------------------------------------- +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Les Crossan" To: "aus-wx" , "Jane ONeill" Subject: aus-wx: Eye of the Storm series 3 Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 20:10:24 +0100 Organization: Cosmic EuroCon X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com
Everybody,

Have just finished viewing "Eye of the Storm", the first part was about Oklahoma, the second part was about a lightning strike at a South African football match and....

the Sydney Supercell Hailstorm - ASWA  NSW rep Michael Thompson had a huge part in this, it was all there, the video footage, the rivers of hail, the report to the BoM that was ignored, all of it! He'll have to do something about that ponytail though <g>

I'll mpeg the video I've taken and get it off to my state rep forthwith....

You will have noticed the lovely surf ! well there were helicopters buzzing around too. The film crew cursed these as they had to wait for quieter periods. I became suspicious and suggested that a fisherman may have been washed off the notorious honeycomb rocks nearby, I don not think they took me seriously. I ended up that two vietnamise fisherman were washed into the water and drowned. Actually rock fishing is Australia's most dangerous sport. But some of the models are hinting at a major outbreak of cold next Tues - Wed. GASP, NGP and MRF all hint towards 5400 thickness to come well over SE Australia. Unlike the last couple of fronts the 5280 is not far behind and may affect us too. GASP has an intense low of 964mb SW of Tasmania on Tuesday with the cold air coming up behind it. There is a lovely jet coming up from way down near Antarctica driving it all too. He said that the storms earlier in the morning when the first advice was issued, there was one major cell followed by another 15 minutes later. Hail was that loud and caused that much vibrations on the buildings that the alarm was set off in his hardware store(??).. This occurred around 2am and 2:15am. I wouldn't mind having confirmation from radar scans. Barradine is located to the NW of Coonabarabran about 30 minutes drive so I suspect about 40 to 50km. Now during the afternoon, there was a second outbreak with reports of hail drifts. A friend of this person reported severe activity with plenty of hail hitting all windows of the car with gusts - very scary!!! This person was at a place known as Mendooran. He reported the hail drifts observed as he came over a hill estimated at 3" to 4" think in the fields. A whole sea of white. This all occurred around 2:30pm in two separate storms (this could have been part of the same storms as they were so large and probably had different areas of activity. Well, I will see if more details are forthcoming. I note it is currently rather cool in eastern NSW this evening. Some of the 10pm (12z) temps include: Canberra -1, Bathurst 0, Cooma -4, Goulburn -3, Orange -7, Parkes 0, Young -2. Even in the coastal districts we have Camden 2, and Wollongong 3. With the surface temps currently below freezing, it is interesting to speculate what might happen in Canberra if the cloud band (with some rain patches) from the decaying front arrives overnight while the temps stay low. Could make tomorrow morning's drive to work pretty challenging... The above "interesting" outcome is however unlikely: 1) the cloud band is dissipating rapidly and is unlikely to reach us in any form; 2) in the remote chance that the rain band arrives, I think the inversion would be too shallow to survive a small amount of mixing associated with the arrival of a rain band. Still with the current low temps around, you just never know what might eventuate. I suspect the most likely outcome will be a further thickening of the developing fog(s) and some very nice rhime frost on the trees and grasses similar to this morning (with min of -5). If the cloud band survives to reach here as patches of middle level cloud, the fog may take most of the day to clear so there may be some low maximum temps around as well. A few months ago the "Eye of the Storm" people interviewed me here in Hong Kong about when I was struck twice by lightning in Australia many years ago.  We don't get the program here, so if someone sees that episode down there, I would love to hear how it went.
