In addition to the tornado, severe weather in the form of large (2cm) to giant hail (5cm) was reported in the ACT and the nearby NSW towns of Bungendore and Braidwood. The tornado, probably an F1, moved over forested country and caused no damage to property. A pic of what may be the St Leonards tornado is at http://www.geocities.com/mesov/FUNNEL.gif I actually witnessed this severe storm (not the tornado) as I was in St Leonards at the time. Although this apparaent location of this funnel cloud corresponds to the area where severe damage occurred, it just doesn't look like the same storm to me. Still I guess storms can like quite different when viewed from different angles. Typhoon Signal number one (Stand by) was hoisted here at 15:50 local time on 6th July and it remains hot, sultry and calm - the calm before the storm. The big walking cockroaches and the flying cockroaches are extremely active which all the old-timers here say means we are in for a very severe storm. That's not very scientific form of meteorology, but historically it has proved to be true. The storm has been stationary and intensifying for about 24 hours now. We shall wait and watch. SOLAR WEATHER (July 7, 2000)

Solar Wind: 384 kilometers per second (equivalent to 1.38 million
kilometers per hour or 859,007 mph). Solar wind density is 6.4 particles per
cubic centimeter.

Geomagnetic conditions: Quiet. The geomagnetic field is expected to be
unsettled to active as high-speed solar wind emanating from a coronal hole
on the sun impacts Earth's magnetic field July 7. The short-lived
disturbance should end sometime July 8. A coronal hole is a relatively quiet
area in the sun's outermost atmosphere or corona. The chance of a
geomagnetic storm at mid-latitudes in the next 24 hours is 20 percent for an
active storm, 5 percent for minor and 1 percent for severe.

Sunspots: Sunspot number is 210. Solar activity is expected to persist at
low levels.  The chance of a medium solar flare is 10 percent in 24 hours.
There is a 1 percent chance of a large flare.
