My summary of it is probably the old song: with the L centred SW of Perth a few days ago the *pre-frontal* flow (on the surface) could collect plenty of moisture flowing over high(ish) SSTs along the West coast. The result was an unstable atmosphere as cooling was observed aloft - and Perth got a good show out of it as I remember. Surface pressure in SW Western Australia dropped at least below 1002 hPa at the time. Now, at 000706/1600 UTC, SE South Austalia shows the lowest pressure around 1010 hPa, with the pre-frontal flow pulling down *continental* (i.e. dry) air into Victoria. The post-frontal air should be unstable enough for footy weather (that's part of the old song, too). The Cb's in NE NSW probably enjoyed those -23 C temps at 500 hPa. Were the Cbs very high-based? 11 hours later (11 UTC sounding) the temperature has risen an unbelievable 12 C to -11 C. With the High (hopefully) exiting out to sea I would imagine mid-level cooling to resume. Maybe with some onshore flow ... >From high-pressured Norman, Harald -- --------------------------------------------- Harald Richter National Severe Storms Laboratory 1313 Halley Circle Norman, OK 73069 ph.: (405) 366-0430 fax: (405) 579-0808 email: hrichter at enterprise.nssl.noaa.gov --------------------------------------------- +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: mbath at pop.ozemail.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.1 Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 07:40:48 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Michael Bath Subject: aus-wx: Re: NE NSW Cbs Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com >The Cb's in NE NSW probably enjoyed those -23 C temps at >500 hPa. Yes those fronts have the potential but are being directed down south once passing through WA not an uncommon thing as people may know. However, next week may bring some interesting weather in terms of cold snow conditions but I await confirmation from the models as the event approaches. I suppose what is needed is a good southerly component in the upper level jet. This will direct the colder air further north to our latitudes. Although still present, it is significantly weaker than over the last week, and this has allowed the fronts to push further east before sliding down to the southeast under the high. The next front does hold a lot of promise, with some nice upper level support, and still plenty of moisture input from the NW cloudband streaming across the continent. Both EC and GASP are going for a closed surface low to form on the front south of Adelaide with a sharp thermal trough moving across the SE early next week. However, once again the highs are well to the north behind the front, so it looks like widespread snow falls will be unlikely. On and west of the NSW southern ranges should see something though, with cold, frosty mornings looking likely towards the middle of next week once the high takes over. But last Tuesday, I noticed an interesting thing behind a small truck (I've never seen it before, or maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough). The roads were all wet (but not raining at the time), and I was following a small truck (with a large rectangular back) on this road. Nothing out of the ordinary happened until we hit about 70km/h (I wasn't speeding, it was an 80km/h speed limit). A small vortex had formed behind the truck (spinning anti-clockwise) - perplexed, I followed the truck (deliberately missing my turn-off :) and watched. Up to 80km/h still the same...until we approached 90km/h (ok, well, just a wee bit over the limit), and it stopped. As we approached a set of lights, we breaked and the vortex temporarily formed at 85km/h, but then stopped at about 70km/h. Just something I thought was interesting :) Probably something to do with the the convergence/confluence behind the truck - but it intrigued me! -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
