I can't recall all the names of those who to get involved but Laurier Williams, Linsday Pearcs?, Tim Crugeon who is studying in Melbourne and a few others got really excited on this point. It was mentioned that snow records were poor in comparison to others weather records. The only way that the best information could be gained is by searching the archives of regional and National Newspapers. I will leave it to that group to take it on and continue if they wish. It would be a great and unique information source for the list/ASWA. On the same token, the storm database is not dead and buried. It will be taken further soon. Enough said from me. Many postings arrive in which the reply takes two lines, but the sender has neglected to delete the original posting, which may be much longer than the reply. For those of us who read the digest, it's pretty annoying when more than half of it is made up of quoted stuff from the previous posting. It's a lot easier on the rest of us if you just quote those lines you're specifically replying to. Sorry if I sound pedantic, and for the wasted bandwidth. Cheers! You could spend weeks down there, its a quiet little nook at the back of the stack library, except in school holidays, but sadly I just can't afford the time to do it, just now. Blair Trewin (He's away) and Laurier and Don would be good sources for snow records, I would guess and its important for us to respect their time restrictions due to their work etc and they may take a while to get back to us. So, in saying that, here's a bit from me. >Tony Rance wrote: > > I live in Katoomba Blue Mountains & am looking for records on snow falls > in the upper Blue Mountains. > For example: > + Most snow ever fallen I would say it is hard to go past the big dump in 4th July 1900 when the Barton Brothers died in the Grose Valley tragedy. The story is in Andy Macqueen's book, "Back from the Brink" page 207, which you should be able to get anywhere locally. They had around 3 feet of snow in Blackheath at that time and the snow extended into the Grose Valley where the brothers apparently both died, its a fascinating story. > + Most consecutive days where snow has fallen Don't know this one. > + Longest time snow has stayed on the ground Nor this either. > + Coldest temperatures This is a point of conjecture, perhaps. The records suggest around -8 for Katoomba but this seems strange to me. Certainly cold outbreak temps up here would rarely reach much more than say -2 and the coldest days (mornings)are those still, clear anti-cyclone nights in the frost hollows where it may reach -5 or even colder. > + Has "snow" (not including sleet) ever actually fallen in Springwood? > Wasn't snow observed falling at North Springwood in the May 28 outbreak this year? Check Laurier Williams page and the report on this outbreak, its a very good one. > Does anyone know any records or know where I may find such snow fall > records for the Upper Blue Mountains? > Is the Blue Mountains the area which receives the most snow in NSW > outside the Snowy Mountains? > Try the Blue Mountain's Gazette and didn't there used to be an old paper called the Echo? The Gazette, might know. And Katoomba library are not bad with info too. I'd say that the Oberon area would have to be one of the snowiest areas outside the Aussie alps, there might be isolated pockets that get more, what do others think? Hope this helps or at least gets the ball rolling. I will edit it, so I hope this isn't too long for the list. I have contacted Andy in the past about my weather interests, his book and research so, I would reason it is okay to present this excerpt here, as long as we honour it as his work. Tony Rance wrote: > > I live in Katoomba Blue Mountains & am looking for records on snow falls > in the upper Blue Mountains. ...Snip The Barton Tragedy: "On Wednesday 4 July 1900 it started snowing across the upper mountains. At Blackheath it snowed incessantly for twenty four hours, resulting in a total fall of 900 millimetres - the greatest known until that time, or since. Unlike most of the Blue Mountains snowfalls, which are confined to the ridge tops, this snow extended well down into the valleys. It was followed by heavy rains which, combined with the thaw, served to swell the Grose and its tributaries for many days. The two Barton brothers - James, aged twenty four, and George, twenty two - could not have picked a worse time to be in the valley. They had set out on Monday from their family home at Bell to go possum trapping and shooting. They had never been in the Grose before, but they were regarded as experienced bushmen and had with them a tent and supplies for three days. On the Wednesday, the day the snow started, it was expected that both would return, or one would return to collect more provisions. Neither returned that day. The snow piled up and gave way to rain, and they still did not return. Their parents waiting at home at Bell, became increasingly anxious. On the Sunday, when the brothers were four days overdue, a search was organised. At least eight local volunteers led by the Hartley Vale policeman, Constable Bleechmore, set out down the old Engineers Track from Hartley Vale Siding - the route believed to have been taken by the brothers. The weather had cleared and there was little snow left, but the creeks were still swollen. That afternoon, near the track and somewhere just upstream from Burra Korain they found the body of George. Covering him was his older brother's coat. Nearby was a swag, their pitched tent and two trees which had been felled over the river, evidently to provide a crossing. It was concluded and later confirmed by the coroner, that George Barton had died of exposure in the snow, a couple of days beforehand. The body was carried up to the siding by nine of the searchers. ...The searching continued through the week, though the volunteer numbers dropped off as men had to return to work. ...The next Sunday, with all the townspeople on holiday, the search was resumed with renewed zeal. Altogether some forty-four men were involved...by the end of the next week, after almost two weeks of searching, more bad weather and snow came in, forcing to search to be suspended. ...By the 7th of August, four weeks after the disappearance, all searching had ceased, James Barton's body was never found. The popular belief was that he had been washed away by the flood, possibly while trying to cross an improvised log bridge..." Hope this is of interest to all, or at least some :-) Lindsay Pearce +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: jdeguara at pop.ihug.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.2.2 Date: Mon, 03 Jul 2000 12:55:17 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Jimmy Deguara Subject: aus-wx: NSW ASWA meeting - Saturday 8th july Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi everyone, Another ASWA meeting has dawned upon us - yes the second Saturday of the month - Saturday 8th July. The meeting details: Time: 5:30 - 6pm Venue: Weather 21 7 West Street North Sydney (parking is available along West Street. Date: Saturday 8th July This meeting has a few items to clear up including the payment of membership for those whose membership is due and wish to pay at the meeting. Also an update of the Annual General Meeting matters will be discussed. There will be a run down on the current weather situation and prognosis using the various weather resources available at Weather 21. I would also like a run down of what significant weather has happened in the past month - any volunteers? Contact me for more details. We will go through the process of state representative as in other states. The NSW members have the right to nominate to become a State rep if they wish even if they would like to run along side a second person. But we will decide that on the night. Guest Speaker The main speaker of the night is Rob Webb from the Severe Weather Section of the Bureau of Meteorology. He will give a talk about the various damage patterns caused by severe thunderstorms. Those that have met Rob now he is an enthusiastic speaker. He has put a fair bit of preparation into this and will be making use of the data projector. I hope we get more members out of hiding. Remember, don't be shy. All people are invited to attend and get to know others on the list as well as ASWA members. It should be an enjoyable night. Some money for pizza and some drinks and snacks as usual are welcomed by this carnivorous lot!!
