Different up north though, with heavy rain and flooding in Northland and Auckland over the last few days. Could also be interesting for the eastern North Island and Wellington early next week if the deep low suggested by several models parks itself to the east with heavy rain and stong (gale?) winds for those areas. When you get used to going outside in the morning with the temps being a couple of degrees either side of 0, 10 feels very warm. It is unusual that Sydney and Canberra both share the same temperature this early on a winter morning and shows the limited geographic extent of the cold air pool. Canberra had some brief sleet at around 6pm last night with the temperature around 3-4 degrees. I was up at the Mt Ainslie lookout around that time (~800m). The sleet was more solid here and the two rotating beams of light from the aircraft beacon spinning around catching the falling snow flakes out to a distance of 100m or so was quite pretty. But maybe they got the information on the tornado from another sorce? Near the back in a summary of severe events in Australia (that have caused damage/death) since 1967, it doesnt list the 1974 event (maybe it didnt cause any damage/injury?), but it also lists another tornadic event, "1991 Manyana/Nowra - Tornado (150 houses damaged, 6 destroyed and 38 parachutists injured)". Do you have any information on this event ? It also mentioned on 23 January 1991 "A tornado and hailstorm over $25 million damage in Adelaide." If you could confirm the 2 events (I have not heard of either, and i only come across tornadic events in NSW/VIC/QLD by chance like the ones above)above it would be most appreciated, and a date for the Nowra event would be appreciated as well. I will head to the library today and research some old newspapers and see if i can come up with anything, wish i had dates on these events, not just years ... makes it a little hard. The booklet was published/revised a number of times, this edition was printed in 1992. As well as bureau resources perhaps an email to the local rags might be useful, depending on how search-friendly their archives are: http://www.localnews.com.au/armexpress/index.asp (I think Bendemeer news would be covered by it) http://www.shoalhaven-independent.com.au/ for the Nowra one - given the injury to parachutists, one would think that this would be a newsworthy storm. >It also mentioned on 23 January 1991 "A tornado and hailstorm over $25 >million >damage in Adelaide." This event is listed in the 'examples of severe storms' part of the Bureau's online severe storms brochure as having occurred on the 22/01/91 (a day after the violent northern Sydney event). I think there is a pic of the Adelaide storm, showing evidence of rotation, in the NSW storm spotters manual. Doesn't seem to be much other readily available information. Also, dont know whether or not you have come across the below account before. You've gotta love the 'language of the day' and just imagine what an event like this would do to Melbourne were it to occur now. 'The afternoon of 2 February 1918 was humid and unsettled in Melbourne, with a slow-moving low pressure trough crossing Victoria. As the trough approached, heavy thunderclouds built up. About 4.50 pm, the so-called "Brighton cyclone" struck:apparently two separate tornadoes, followed about five minutes later by a third, hit the bayside suburb with great destruction. Many buildings were totally destroyed, and evenwell constructed houses severely damaged. At one location two tornado tracks crossed, creating (in the language of the day) a "veritable orgy of destruction". In the few minutes that the storm lasted, two people were killed and many others injured. Wind speeds were estimated at 320 km/h (Fujita rating F3), making this possibly the most intense tornado to hit a major Australian city. After hitting Brighton, the tornadoes apparently continued east across "open country" (now densely settled); were such a storm to occur today, the death and injury toll would likely be much higher.' {sourced from http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/c20thc/} D ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jun 2000 11:37:40 +1000 From: Ross Wilson X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.61 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: Aussie Weather Subject: aus-wx: Aus-wx: Orange (1100EST) Update X-Sender: (Unverified) Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi everyone Well, I've not seen such a dramatic change. The wind does not have the same bight as last night, and the rain drops don't give the same stinging sensation when hitting my face during the run (ie no tiny hail or slushy stuff). So in regards to cold, I'd guess the worst is over for the Illawarra. The surf this morning ws still only moderate in size around the Wollongong lighthouse and harbour area. Maybe on a more southerly exposed beach the waves will certainly be crashing in. If the winds turn a little more on-shore then it would get really interesting. Winds are fairly strong, but gusting around the place to quite strong. Now all I need to do is get away from work early, the films in the camera and its ready to roll. This one actually was the low that spawned the front, so...who wants to nitpick?? Andrew. John Gaul wrote: > > >Lot's of hail - no snow. Adelaide's max was only 11 on Wednesday. Traffic was slow both ways on the Pacific Mwy though...the fog was very photogenic, but most of the shoulders are closed due to roadworks. There was some very thick fog in patches though (ie, difficult to see the buildings across the Mwy!) I do enjoy fog though :-) James Chambers wrote: > > Hi all > > Lots of fog in Brisbane as well! As Patrick pointed out, the temperature in Canberra at 8am was on 10c while at 3am it was on 4c - a rise of 6c at a time of day when it would usually be falling. It would seem that warm air was being advected around the eastern side of the low eventually ending up over the southern tablelands. - Paul G. > >At 8.00 am this morning it was 10 degrees in Canberra with about 4/8 cover >of cu/scu and light to moderate SE breeze. What's New on the MSC site - all the latest updates. http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/wotznu.htm There's a lot of information now available on the Fairy Dell tornado to be found here and also on the June Forecast Outlook, Discussion & Report page. Many thanks to those of you who have contributed observations, newspaper reports etc regarding both June weather and the tornado. http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/june2000.htm MSC's favourite forecasting links - no models here!!! Included are links for webcams, analyses, images, websites and reference sites. http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/forecasting.htm We have a brand new serial written by someone who has just (in the last 30 minutes) joined ASWA. Enjoy!! - you'll relate to this... http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/journal0628.htm All of the reference articles written by Clyve Herbert (ASWA - Vic), Ian Holton (ASWA - SA), Leslie Lemon (ASWA - USA), CJG Morriss (Uni Melb), Lindsay Smail(ASWA - Vic) and the NSSL have found a home in a section called "Why is it so????"(what else?) http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/why.htm ***An AMS Monograph sent to me by Prof K A Browning (Uni of Reading, UK) entitled "The Structure and Mechanism of Hailstorms" 1978 will find a home here in the next couple of weeks.*** By the way ASWA now has 213 members - and Victoria has 52 of them!!!!! I know that one house damaged by it was located at 9 Bloomsbury street Chilwell. That's where baby Phil Smith was asleep in my pram when the tornado demolished all of the frame-built portion of the house. According to my grandpa, it became very dark with heavy thunder clouds about 15:30 and they had to light the lamps to see. The thunder roared a lot and then came a noise which was louder than an express train. The roof was removed from the main solid concrete house but the house was otherwise structurally undamaged. They were sure I had been blown away and rushed out to the front three rooms which had been a kind of built-in verandah. The roof, all walls and all furniture had gone. All that remained of those three rooms, standing all alone in the middle of the stone slab floor was the pram, complete with mosquito net still in place, and me still fast asleep inside. I would love to know the date and whether any official stories were ever told of the event.
