Hey all,

The line passed over dropping a few minutes of steady rain. A small gust front formation had formed to my SW and this went on to drop more signifcant falls around Camden and Picton. There was one phenomena i hadn't seen before though i have read about it somewhere. At Cranebrook here, i can see the Lakes and the Nepean river. Every morning these are shrouded in for, as they were this morning. Well about 15 minutes before the change hit, all the fog disapeared, in a matter of minutes. Then five minutes later is reappeared. Then when the change hit, the fog was being lifted off the surface into the gust front formation. The fog was dragged probably 5-10kms away from the Lakes/River, trailing and then feeding into the cloud. Quite spectacular.

Most significant is a very clear circulation which, based on animating hourly ir and wv satpix, I would put around Hay (35S, 145E) at 10am and moving ENE. It is the most prominent feature on the satpix, and is causing the cloudband that moved over Sydney this morning to virtually stop and wrap around to the south of the circulation. At the same time, the area of cloud (and in particular water vapour) is expanding as convergence produces uplift. There is plenty of moisture around this time, compared to the fairly dry SW stream in May. I've started putting 6-hourly detailed surface anals on my site. The 3am chart showed a vague low centre (centres?) over western Victoria, though no centre is obvious from the 9am chart, apart from the expected development near Gabo Island. However, it's clear that an upper circulation is gaining momentum and should cross the Central / Northern Tablelands area later today and tonight, assisted by the broader circulation around the developing SW Tasman low. The combination of orographic uplift, convergence and moisture could give us one of the best snowfalls we've had for a couple of decades, though that's not saying much! If you've nothing better to do, I'd recommend downloading the hourly ir satpix at http://www.yoko.npmoc.navy.mil/nsds-e20shots/austir/ and using your graphics package (or even your browser at a pinch) to animate them, as they show the action better than anything else at present. -- Laurier Williams Australian Weather News & Links http://ausweather.simplenet.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2000 11:08:02 -0700 From: Lindsay X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.0 (Win16; I) To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: A request to you all !!!!! I had real trouble getting into town earlier. For a while, it was whiteout conditions. But local news reports of major road closures to the east. Gusty winds prevent light snow from settling. Sure enough as I reached the top of the escarpment, 5 mins out of Robertson, sleet turned into heavy snow! The temp at the top was hovering between 1.5C and 2.0C which allowed for a thin wet cover to settle on everything including an opaque, icy slush on the road. Occasionally a short blast of thick dry snow came on the gusts of wind. The trip up and down Maquarie pass was very wet - torrential rain infact which for me was very different in a snow event! If the temperature had have been a little colder up there they would have been 2 feet under the stuff by now - but it may still get colder tonight. I'll be interested to see if the top of the escarpment looks a little brighter than normal in the early morning light tomorrow. Not a bad nights work seeing as I'm not even in Taralga! When I looked out everything was covered white by hail. Soon it began to sleet then quickly turned into very large wet flakes. It snowed very heavy for around twenty minutes in which time the ground was covered white in snow. My car had a thick layer of ice / snow & the road was covered aswell. It snowed lighter after that, for around 25 minutes before stopping. There has been light snow showers periodically through-out the day.
Now at 10 pm there is only a very strong / freezing wind. The temp' is around 1 degree Celsius, not including the wind chill factor.
