San Francisco got 39 in the city (an equal record, and compares with a mean max of around 20) and 41 at the airport. Most of the Central Valley stations seemed to be in the 40-43 range (although there was one 46), somewhat above their mid-30s means but the sort of thing they'd expect to see a few times in a normal summer. The offshore flow was weaker in southern California, so LA wasn't all that hot (27 downtown), although it got over 40 in some of the outer suburbs (and in LA some of the outer suburbs are a LONG way inland!). In marked contrast, New York has been 17-18 for the last three days, about 10 below normal and the longest sustained cold spell I can remember there at this time of year, although they've had individual colder days in June. Hobart reached 18.9, which ranks equal 6th in June maxima in the post-1944 period; the last time there was a milder day was in 1987 (although 18.9 was also recorded in 1995). The record high for June is 20.1, in 1958. I would presume that fohn effects in the northwesterly were responsible. Still no sign of serious rain down there, either, although the 12-month running rainfall totals have risen a little from their April lows because May and June 1999 were even drier than the current May and June. At 2.45pm I happened to glance north from my home at McLeans Ridges and a well defined thin funnel cloud extended about 100 metres downward from the cloud base - and only about 3-4 kilometres away. I was quite surprised to see this given the conditions, but quickly grabbed the video and camera. Over the next 15 minutes it persisted varying little in length but undergoing several transformations in width and angles, persisting in virtually the same location. At one stage scuds wrapped around the funnel and this and the rotation is quite noticebale on the video footage. It occurred on the SE side (updraft) of a moderate sized cumulus spreading out at the top into altocumulus. Cloud depth was probably only 2km, and cloud base at about 700m. A few of these larger cumulus were around at the time but in a clearing pattern with thinning stratocumulus now persisting (3.40pm). There was barely a shower in the area at the time of the funnel and only a light ESE blowing at surface. Quite an amazing sight given the generally boring look to the sky today. regards, Michael ================================================================== Michael Bath mailto:mbath at ozemail.com.au McLeans Ridges NSW http://australiasevereweather.com/ Australia http://www.lightningphotography.com/ Secretary ASWA Inc. http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ ================================================================== +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: gws at mail.pipeline.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.5 (32) Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 15:50:00 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: "L.J. & B. Yes Blair, I am currently enjoying all this at Pleasanton (East Bay area) in California. The local reports had 109F on Wednesday and 113 at a nearby station. It has been incredibly hot, much hotter than I can recall in Sydney since our hot spell during the mid 90's (94 I think). San Francisco itself was quite pleasant today (I would guess in the 80's) although back in Pleasanton it is again time even too hot to swim. On another note, I was touring between St Louis and South Dakota for much of last week and the weather was 'relatively' quite boring (for severe storms that is) on the plains. On my last day in that area I noticed that the SPC day 2 convective outlook indicated a moderate risk area basically centred over Des Moines where I happened to be staying for the most part. Since my friend (now ex-friend 8>)was desperate to see the sights of Califonia i caved in. Naturally the day I arrived in Califonia, a tornado watch was issued for virtually all of Iowa and all i could do was watch it all unfold on the weather channel (which was excellent I must say). cheerio, David ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: alex coates To: "aussie-weather at world.std.com" X-Originating-IP: [203.26.206.10] Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 18:02:15 +1000 X-mailer: AspMail 2.62 (SMTP85107B) Subject: aus-wx: Adelaide Cold Snap Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, This week has been very cold and Paralowie. 10th 5.1, 11 2.4, 12 1.3, 13 1.6, 14th 1.2, 15th 5.4, 16th 10.9. __________________________________________________________________ Get your own free web email at http://www.looksmart.com.au LookSmart Australia +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Peter Tristram" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: Funnel sighted in NE NSW Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 21:55:02 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Michael Bath To: Sent: Friday, June 16, 2000 3:45 PM Subject: aus-wx: Funnel sighted in NE NSW > Hi all, > > I've just had a close encounter with a funnel cloud ! Seems like those large very wet cumulus on the far north coast of NSW must have been funnel-productive! Yesterday, I was returning south from the North Coast cross country championships in Murwillumbah with my daughter, Jenna, when we also noticed a well-shaped funnelnear New Brighton. We left Murwillumbah after enduring intermittent drizzle but noticed excellent cumulus bubbles to the south-east and, as we headed south, a distinctive lowering at the base of one cell seemed to have a funnel so I asked Jenna to check it out. It was difficult to get a good view due the crappy road and you don't take your eyes off the speedo (camera zones) or the road in that neck of the woods! But Jen assured me that the funnel extended way down. By the time I reached a better vantage point to have a good long look myself, I was underneath the neighbouring cumulus - pouring rain! Further south, near Wardell, the onshore feed of showers had its southern limits and some of these showers had all the signs of potential funnels too with scud lowerings and evident rotations but I had to head south. I would expect that the odd water spout was reported.
