From vantage spot at uni in Penrith there was explosive activity up and down the coast all day, in the earlier afternoon particularly. We copped a fairly heavy shower at around 3pm. Some uni friends of mine reported that this was preceeded my a very brief shower of fine hail. When i went scouting around a few minutes after there were a few very small fragments of ice sitting on the tops of puddle . These were generally swamped by the cigarette butts that were picked up by this brief shower. Yet only a thin path had rain, which some 200 metres west was dry all day. Anyway an interesting afternoon. dann __________________________ Daniel Weatherhead Blaxland, NSW weatherhead at ozemail.com.au SYDNEY STORM CHASERS www.sydneystormchasers.com > Hi Jane, > > Max gust would have been just over 30 knots i guess - the shower didn't even > show up on radar.. not even one spec of anything on local or broad - which > goes to show how frustratingly poorly our radar handles coastal > rain/showers.. > > The cloudtops in a couple of those pictures look quite high jane - very > nice.. we do get the occasional day like that up here if we have a cold pool > over us (ie Jan 12 this year).. but nothing like what you guys get down > there during winter.. > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: MSC > To: > Sent: Tuesday, June 13, 2000 9:45 PM > Subject: Re: aus-wx: hails on Gold Coast? > > > > Ben Quinn wrote: > > > Funny you should say that - in just about every shower today i noticed > what > > > appeared to be 'hail shafts' ... i did get a few pictures of these: > > > > > There was a stiff 30 knot gust front with it.. close to gales at one > stage > > > actually.. > > > > and > > > > > Wilson wrote: > > > > I would like to confirm if there was a bit of hail > > > > at the gold coast area ( southport )at about 3:00pm today? > > > > as I was doing my last exam and I heard heaps of "stone" like sond > > > > dropping on top of the hall... Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, The showers that formed yesterday appeared to form on a S'ly surge that went up the coast very quickly. It wasn't anything major, just enough to spark up a few CJ showers on the line. The temperature dropped from 20.3C to 17.9C as I went through the gusts, and only rose to the mid 18's after that, and it was remarkably cool after the showers had passed with a slightly stronger S'ly. I was changing the CD tracks at the time I got hit by the gusts (which surprised me, at this stage they were only drizzle showers!) And it was probably more noticable because I was only driving with one hand at the time, and then suddenly the wind was "throwing" the wheel, and I had to hold onto it with the other hand just until after the gust had passed. Winds probably were near gale force. The showers moved incredibly quickly, given that most of the distance between my work and home is freeway, and I was doing 110, and I was basically running parallel to the showers (heading ~N), only gaining a little ground, but as soon as I stopped for 30 seconds at home, they'd already passed me and were heading north of the Brisbane River. Typically, the line of showers that had very nice dark RFB's, let out their guts as they moved north of the river (and at 4pm, you can forget going into the airport area industrial park.) Some showers did show up Ben, as Jane mentioned there was a line of 2-10's off the coast. It was the showers over land that didn't show up properly. While at a park on the Brisbane River near Lytton, I thought I saw Damien Howes' car (especially when I saw the car overtaking someone on the park driveway hehe), so I purposely tried to catch up with him in the carpark (largish carpark) but it wasn't him. Should have known I'd be the only idiot on the southside chasing showers As to finally answer Wilson's question - hail could have been quite possible, and has certainly been possible for the past few days with the cold air above us (although there has been a reasonable warming in the upper levels in the past 24-36hrs, it still is possible). What is the highest readings > measured in australia or nsw?, > This is a difficult question to answer because our database is riddled with erroneous sea-level pressures where the station pressure has been corrected to sea-level twice by mistake (it may happen only 5 times in a 50-year record, but when you multiply that by several hundred stations it's enough to completely screw up any search on high pressures). I'm actually working on eliminating these errors at the moment, so I may be in a position to give a more definite answer in a week or two. Anyway, I have been through most of the Bureau-staffed/capital city stations. A sample of record highs is: Hobart 1043.6 Launceston 1044.3 (highest of the stations I looked at) Melbourne 1041.2 Canberra 1042.9* Wagga 1042.3 Sydney 1040.0 Brisbane AP 1034.1 Adelaide 1040.5 Perth AP 1039.9 Darwin 1021.4 Alice Springs 1034.0 * The conversion to sea-level at high-elevation stations becomes increasingly unreliable at the extremes; Canberra (570m) is near the upper limit of elevation for a reasonable MSLP to be calculated - WMO recommends that MSLP not be calculated for stations above 800m. The Tasmanian/Australian highest values date from early June 1967 (which almost certainly provided the Australian record - it's certainly the only time I've seen a chart with a closed 1044 isobar); most of the NSW, Victorian and southern Queensland values are from 7-8 July 1987, whilst Adelaide's was set in May 1973 and Perth's in July 1951. Two caveats - this only covers the period of digital pressure data (from 1940-1950 or so at most of the above stations), and it covers 3-hourly data - so fractionally higher values may have occurred between observations (although, as pressure changes slowly in high- pressure situations, we would be talking about a few tenths of a hectopascal at most - unlike extreme low pressures which tend to happen at times of rapid pressure variation, especially in tropical cyclones). +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: nzts.nz at pop3.caverock.net.nz X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.3 (32) Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 12:14:54 +1200 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: John Gaul Subject: Re: aus-wx: Storm-track.com links to chasers etc Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com At 22:37 13/06/00 +1000, you wrote: >Dear all, > > >I think it's time for the aussies to let the rest of the world know that >we are here in enthusiastic & rapidly growing numbers....if you would >like to add your site (or someone else's) to Storm-track.com go to the >following page.... > >http://www.storm-track.com/links.htm > >So far the international links consist of the following......I think we >should expand it > > >European, Australian, and Asian chasing > >David Shohami (Israel). >Dutch Tornado Chasers (Netherlands) -- in Dutch. >Ira Fehlberg (Western Australia). >James Chambers (Australia). >Melbourne Storm Chasers (Australia). Cooma Airport (-9.9) narrowly missed out on scoring the first non- alpine -10 of the winter. Sub-zero minima were common in NSW, Victoria and SA, -5 at Yunta being a notable observation - this appears to be a very cold site indeed and might well be the site of SA's first -10 if there is ever a repeat of the 1976 cold spell. Melbourne's 2.6 was also its lowest since July 1998, although that says more about last winter (or its absence thereof) than about the coldness of the night. The city-suburbs temperature contrast wasn't what it sometimes is on such nights (there was no sign of frost on the Yarra flats at Heidelberg this morning, whereas I'd normally expect it with any city minimum below about 5), perhaps because there was more fog in the eastern suburbs than there was in the city. A slight breeze from the north was detectable, which may have resulted in the air being mixed too much, or too dry for fog as it was coming from inland??? Checking out the nights records of temp and dewpoint for Melbourne from http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/YMML.html shows that the dew point was around 1degC, whereas on the previous morning, I think it was up around 3degC, thus drier air this morning. However, the accuracy of this source may be questionable. Hi Anthony (and others) The NZ Thunderstorm Soc was formed in the early 1980's when 'the El Nino was delivering really exceptional weather' especially here in Canterbury New Zealand with lots of cold southerly fronts bringing in severe thunderstorms and hail and even a damaaging tornado to the Halswell suburb of ChCh in 1982. It was a good weather period for interesting weather. >From then on we have had the usual amount of thunderstorms, average about 3 a year but lately apart from one or 2 'rodent' weather events, nothing much has happened. Hey all

Some huge rainfall totals to 9am have been reported from many SW sites today from a rainband that has been sitting over the SW area for the past 2 days now.
Pinjarra South (100kms south of Perth) recorded 124mm to 9am which was the highest in the country to 9am :). Other reports include Mandurah 99mm, Bussleton AP 80mm, Bunbury 68mm  and Perth 48mm.
All the other rainfall reports you can find here: http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDO41W01.txt  there is a HEAP of them!
Lots of water flowing into the dams and the farmers should be happy too :)

Regards
Jason

I don't know yet if that region has picked up anything today. 124 is certainly a very high 24-hour total for this region in winter; of the stations I've looked at, Cape Leeuwin has had 174 (in August), but it was hard to find much else over 100. (It is a different story in summer, when most of the region's heaviest single rain events have taken place - most recently in January this year - despite the normal dry conditions then). Sydney AMOS Presentation, June 28, 2000 Macquarie University Warm-Season Supercell Thunderstorms in Australia Dr. Andrew Treloar Bureau of Meteorology, Sydney Abstract Severe thunderstorms pose a significant risk to the Australian community. Of particular importance are long-lived Supercell thunderstorms that produce large swathes of giant hail, destructive winds and outbreaks of tornadoes. Supercell storms differ from other thunderstorms due to the presence of persistent updraft rotation. This enhances storm severity and longevity. Supercell thunderstorms are well documented in the North American literature and their climatology and supporting environment in that area is generally well known. Although numerous Supercell events have been documented in Australia, their general environment and relative distribution around the country is still not well understood. Using criteria based on significant surface impacts, distinctive radar characteristics and the proximity of upper-air soundings, a database has been constructed containing close to 40 Australian Supercell thunderstorms, representing all mainland States of Australia. This talk will present preliminary results on the local environments associated with these events, illustrated by radar loops of various classes of Supercells and their "distinctive" radar echo types. Further work will involve the generation of a climatology of Supercell storms in Australia based on a method recently employed to define the distribution of cool-season tornado events. Notes on the Speaker Andrew Treloar has been employed by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology since 1986 in the roles of Weather Observer, Technical Officer and Meteorologist. He has been involved in the Bureau's Severe Weather program for the majority of his career, and until recently was manager of the NSW Severe Thunderstorm and Fire Weather program. In his current role as the NSW Supervising Meteorologist he oversees the provision of all weather services in the State. Andrew has published papers on numerous topics including the meteorology of a severe "blow-up" fire in Victoria, conditions producing extreme fire weather risk in NSW, storm damage assessment and objective techniques for radar hail identification. Andrew's qualifications include a Bachelor of Science (Forestry), a Graduate Diploma in Meteorology and a Weather Observer's Certificate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- Jimmy Deguara from Schofields, Sydney President of Australian Severe Weather Association Inc.
