Some major events: # A mini-tornado causing some damage around Nelson on June 1. # Snow on the South Island mountains and skifields, starting from May 30 - initially from northerly air originating from high latitudes, but travelling via Australia!; then southerly winds from June 2. The southerly air hasn't been that icy, with snow probably not getting any lower than about 700 metres, but skifield owners haven't been complaining (Mt Hutt is now open). Snow has also fallen on Mt Ruapehu and other central North Island mountains. # Southerly gales and heavy rain about Cook Strait on June 4. # A spectacular hailstorm in Auckland's North Shore on the evening of the 7th - results looking just like a heavy snowfall. Funnel clouds observed offshore from Northland (Bay of Islands) earlier that same day. Could be a proper icy blast on the way (for NZ) late Sunday and into Monday. All the models suggest this, though all seem to predict it will be short-lived. Highest falls in northern QLD were 57mm at Einasleigh, Kidston 46mm and Tully with 42mm.. plus a whole bunch of 20-40mm totals.. Highest falls in central QLD were 65mm at Dalrymple Heights, Mackay and Mirani with 59mm, and 53mm at Doraville... once again plenty of 20-50mm totals.. Parts of western QLD even got some nice rain, with the highest totals being 49mm at Ulcanbah and 36mm Stonehenge and quite a few totals between 10 and 30mm's.. The rain in SE QLD was mostly confined to northern parts - i recorded bugger all to 9am, and there weren't any significant totals south of about Noosa.. Double Is Point picked up 65mm, Melrose 48mm and a fair few totals in excess of 15mm (all northern SE QLD).. This cloud and rain should move out to sea over the weekend, but some models are still forecasting some interesting upper level features for parts of QLD next week.. it is winter and i'm not expecting anything too major.. but..... Hey all
Some nice strong wind gusts to 108km/h were recorded from the cold front that just went through the SW this morning. Rainfall has been light with the highest total to 9am just 11mm at Yallingup South. Seems to have caused more wind than rain due to the pressure gradient between the front at huge high ridging back towards WA. At 9am Rottnest Island (Just offshore from the Perth Metro Area) was reporting gale force winds and so was Cape Naturaliste.
! Rottnest Island *   !                !  !NNE  67 ! 15  66! 20  13    !  4  !
! Cape Naturaliste *  !                !  !N    67 ! 15  82! 19  13    !  9  !
Perth rainfalls were disappointing again with all falls below 10mm. At 2pm the temp in Perth was 14.9C with fresh to strong N'ly winds. Winds usually turn W-SW after fronts move through but with the strength of the high over east its ridging westwards all the way to the west coast which is what blocked and weakened the latest cold front, dp's before the rain started were around -5C in Perth! :(

Severe Wind Warning from this morning.............

BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY
WESTERN AUSTRALIAN REGIONAL OFFICE

PRIORITY
FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

SEVERE WIND WARNING
Issued at 11:05 am WST on Saturday, 10 June 2000

For the Southwest District and western parts of the Southern Coastal District
including  Bunbury, Busselton and Albany.

A cold front  lies across the SW corner and has caused gales and wind gusts to
108 km/hr this morning at several locations including Busselton, Cape
Naturaliste and Albany.

Wind gusts to 110 km/hr are expected during the next two to three hours and may
cause damage to property.

Winds are expected to ease during the afternoon as the front passes eastwards
and weakens.

The State Emergency Service advises people to stay indoors if winds are very
strong. Boat owners should ensure that small craft are securely moored.

No further warnings will be issued unless the situation changes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like a normal winter pattern is starting to begin for WA's SW with more fronts to come after this one and no big 1040hPa highs for a little while hopefully!

Regards
Jason

Hi all

Yeah, this front has definitely been worth watching this afternoon. Strong N winds have been reported from many locations along the west coast and SW of the state throughout the day, with light to moderate rain areas along much of the west coast. An interesting observation at 3pm was of sandstorms at Albany and Carnarvon! Not surprising given the 30kt winds that were present at the time.

These are the obs from my place, and not Mount Boyce AWS. Mind you, after you've had a blast of snow this season and numerous days under 5 degrees with big wind chills, today (8.5 and light winds) feels absolutely balmy. Bye-the-way, anyone got any thoughts on the coming week or so? What are the models saying? Besides that if there is something it's rain wrapped - single cells (coldies) can produce short lived funnels & tornadoes but personally I think this single cell event is inconclusive! Try to video single cells approaching or close side on, if you can - the tornadoes form on the updraught not the RFD.
