Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Yes, I think I have experienced this here in the Blue Mountains. During the the first signs of the cold outbreak on 27/5, we observed flakes falling when the temp was well above zero, although I am also wondering if the thermometer had enough time to adjust to the correct temperature, as the cold air came in quite quickly. Just a little while before the front arrived, it was around 7 degrees here, and then fresh to strong winds hit us and some rain fell which very soon turned to very light snow. The air was still quite dry at this time and the temp was around 5 I think and quite strong gusts pushed the flakes towards us. It was fascinating watching it all. It's not that uncommon to get snow falling above zero degrees here, at near 1100 metres altitude. I've seen good flakes falling at around 4 degrees, when the cloud base is relatively high. There were some heavy rainfalls in the region yesterday: 39mm at Burketown, 41 at Croydon, 60 at Georgetown, 44 at Normanton. Mean monthly totals in this region are mostly in single figures, but despite this only Georgetown's total appears to be a June record - the database is operating at glacial speed today so I haven't been able to check it out fully as yet. It seems a fairly flat site, and I suspect its low minima are due to two factors: not being in the immediate vicinity of buildings or asphalt/concrete surfaces (it's on the grounds of a golf/bowling club), and having the thermometer screen over bare sand (at least in 1993, when the photos were taken). Sand seems to be quite conducive to low minima - Eyre (which regularly gets very low minima despite its proximity to the coast) is another site of this type.
