But if an upper level trough can get up well into the tropics, while there's a surface SE'ly, things can get interesting. For example, 1998 (I think), a large upper level cold pool moved northwards near Townsville and the result was flood rains, accompanied with golf ball hail. Interestingly, back in the 1930's there are quite a few reports of winter hailstorms along the Granite Belt (which was then nick named the "Hail Belt.)" Back in the 1930's, the storm seasons were very active, and the winters appeared very cold with snow being reported even in Brisbane in the old BoM records! Most likely, this meant that very cold air had to advance ahead of the SW'ly change, and sit over us with SE'lies and the surface. A similar situation of this was May 1, 1999 - when an upper level cold pool moved into SE QLD with SE winds, and gave us some hail storms - with STW's out (our first ever STW in May maybe???) But before and after this, SW'lies prevailed. As Ben Quinn mentioned, the temperatures we had were very cold in the upper levels (in fact, 700mb and 500mb were the coldest I'd ever seen them for Brisbane!) 700mb level was down to -10C at one stage - incredible!!! That's an effective 500mb temp of -30C!!! There was a large inversion though at 650, that broke down eventually and gave us a 500mb temperature of -23C! Quite impressive. Our 300mb temperature also scored an impressive -42C! It would have sleeted at Stanthorpe/Granite Belt had there been enough moisture. It's still early in the season though - should be a few more chances of sleet/snow down there if these patterns keep up! Currently 10:50pm, 9.6C, DP of 4C (it rose a little this afternoon as a NE seabreeze came in), 1020hPa steady, calm winds. Dam cold! I've been able to pinch both the heaters for the study...28C in here, might return one to the lounge soon :-) Meanwhile, where are my gloves from last winter...
