Hey all,

Well what a huige adn eventful night.  We drove to Warburton with Donna Buang in mind but we encountered hail and sleet severa times between Surrey Hills and Warburton.  Snow was falling down to about 400m on the way up and we stopped at the Cement Creek turnoff (the road was closed) at an elevation of 500m.  Snow had been falling here for ages with about 10-12cm already and falling heavily.  We stayed here for a while, noting a massive number of trees and big branches down all the way up the mountain - must've been some hugely strong winds to do this much damage!!!  We had 2cm of snow fall on us in the hour we were there (not too bad for just 500m) and on the way down the mountain it was still snowing at about 300-350m.  We again encountered hail and sleet on the return trip and saw about 5 flashes of lighting but the phonecall from my mum and sister had me a little worried.  The talked of a massive hailstorm which woke them up with the noise.  Hail ranging from .25 - .75cm covered the ground and roads to a depth of 3cm with drifts of up to 10cm.  The temperature at my house was just 3C when I got home after some impossible driving in the hail.  My sister was up to greet me and she told me that she'd done her own snow chase up to St Helena (elevation about 100m above sea level).  They had hail and sleet and it was too heavy to drive in so they pulled over and all of a sudden it all stopped and it snowed for 5 mins (enough to make a snowball or two from the roof of the car) then the sleet/hail started again.  I'm pretty sure this hail will last all night (its 2am already).  I've taken some photos with mum's camera (with the flash) and I hope they turn out OK so you all can see this - its amazing.  Anyway - better go to bed considering i've got to go to work in a mere 4.5 hours....hehehe.

I remember it well as during our lunch break (year 8 in high school) I was watching the clouds moving in from the SE along the Illawarra escarpment and I commented to my mates that they were snow clouds. They seriously refused to believe, but I persisted. It wasn't until the last class of that day, and after one of our class mates had run an errand, that he was very excited on his return by the news that you could see snow all through the Robertson area, and the trees were covered down another 100-200m from the escarpment in this area. Then they believed me. We headed up after school and had a large snowfight, etc around four hours after the falls, snow was still around 10cm thick on open ground (in the sun). Another friend packed snow onto the windscreen and front of car, and it lasted until after we returned to Oak Flats (elevation 10m). Anyway, that was a snowfall I remember very well. It certainly feels cold enough for a repeat in the wind down at Port Kembla this morning, I wish I had a thermometer for my push bike as it was again extremely cold riding to work at 6:00am today. Also, it had rained sometime earlier in the night at North Wollongong. And there was some low cloud around the Robertson area right on dawn, which certainly looked as if it could have held snow for that area. Currently there appears to be a little low cloud coming off the mountains which hasn't happened here since this outbreak. Cheers, snow freaks. Currently 2.3 degrees at my house in Higgins. Overcast with some light showers of rain and the very slight hint of sleet. Local BoM are saying there is still the possibity of snow Canberra today. I hope that happens although we may be 1 or 2 degrees too warm.

The surrounding hills are very white and there is obviously a very heavy snow cover in the Brindabellas.

The EC model indicates more of an onshore flow for south-east NSW with this next cold surge around 12z today (around 10pm) while NGP has the flow more or less parallel with indications of high precip just off-shore. It'll be interesting to see just how low snow might fall tonight along the eastern side of the ranges - if there is enough moisture for precipitation. I am thinking of the ranges just behind Bateman's Bay as having a good potential if the wind becomes a little bit more onshore.. - Paul G. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Ben Quinn" To: Subject: aus-wx: Victorian Rainfall Figures Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 10:26:51 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi everyone, Some lumpy totals in VIC in the 24 hours to 9am this morning - highest totals were Viewbank AWS with 47mm, Kinglake 37mm and Hunters Hill AWS with 35mm .. and a whole stack of 10-30mm's - this is on top of the moderate to heavy falls of up to 62mm in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday.. (This happened because I'd compiled the lists by a search of the 'monthly summary' table on our database, and Perisher didn't appear in that table for May 1977 because it had too many missing observations). The previous record was actually -5.5 at Perisher on May 31, 1977. Note also that in the 1977 event none of the four stations which normally have very low maxima in such events (Mount Hotham, Mount Buller, Falls Creek, and Crackenback) reported. It seems reasonable to presume, given the Perisher observation, that Crackenback (at least) would have had a maximum of around -7 or -8 on May 31, 1977, which would have approached the Australian record for any month (-6.9 at Crackenback on 9 July, 1978). May 31, 1977 saw a maximum of -4.5 at Cabramurra (compared with -3.0 in this event), which is the second-lowest in their 38-year record (after -4.8 on July 25, 1986, discussed elsewhere in this group). Cabramurra is the ONLY alpine site with a reasonably complete long-term record; all the other sites have substantial amounts of missing data, especially in summer. It is only since the installation of AWSs that we have had any reasonably complete summer observations from any of the alpine resorts (for the purposes of this, 'summer' means anything outside the ski season), which is why so many of the record low maxima for NSW and Victoria for months other than June-August have been set in the last few years. In Melbourne at least, the heaviest rain today seems to have been concentrated in areas that largely missed out earlier, so the cumulative totals in the suburbs may not be as high as one might expect. It was pretty chaotic out our way this morning (I live in Heidelberg, and Viewbank is the nearest gauge to us, about 5km away). I was faced with three pretty unappealing options - the train (where only one train in three was running because of fallen trees further up the line and signalling problems), the car (with the prospect of traffic which was bad even by usual standards), or the bike (with the prospect of getting drenched). I chose the last of these (using the radar to try to pick the best window of opportunity), but didn't quite make it before getting unloaded upon from a great height in the last 5 minutes. I'm still drying out... No snow at Heidelberg that I've seen, but there are numerous reports on ski.com.au from places like Bulleen and St. Helena, which are near us at elevations of 100-150 metres (we're at about 60). > There are a number of 7 day totals over 100mm (although you'd think most of > the rain would have fallen in the last 2-3 days), and dozens in excess of > 50mm.. sounds like it's very wet down there!! > The alpine regions and the eastern ranges will be getting a lot of moisture (most of it in the form of snow). This is very good news for Melbourne's water supply as the snowpack in the upper catchments should give streamflow a nice boost as it melts (whether that ends up being next week or in September). I imagine a lot of the 'rainfalls' on high ground are underestimates because so much has fallen as snow and the automatic stations don't always handle it well. I have at lot of > interest from people at work in this one. > > Best regards, > DVC? In winter type precip most of the precip is caused by "slant wise flow". The air flow through the large scale system flows mostly horizontally but with a gradual uplift. The flow is said to follow "isentropic" surfaces or surfaces of potential temperature. Thus, in these types of storms tstms don't often occur. However, under certain conditions warm, moist air can override the cold air. Then there develops "elevated" instability or warm buoyant air above the colder air nearer the surface. This air may then find that it is so unstable that it rises and forms convective (showers or thunder) storms. Much of what we might call "hail" that is 1 to 3 mm across is most likely frozen rain drops, called sleet or ice pellets. Even if there is thunder and these are little balls of ice, they can also be oblate spheroids, then this is sleet and not hail. Often periods of sleet can be showery or can persist for periods of an hour or more with various intensity. This can result in accumulations of the sleet on the ground. But when thunder is occurring and the balls of ice may be ~ 7 mm or larger, then that is probably hail. But during winter weather, there is often insufficient water vapor and the related instability to cause updrafts that are able to actually grow hail. For this reason, hail is extremely rare with winter storms. Thunderstorms themselves are rare in winter weather. I mentioned this in an earlier post. But if and when they occur, they can bring heavy rain and very heavy snow. With the warm ocean nearby and flow off the ocean, then sometime sufficient lift can create sufficiently strong updrafts for a time for thunderstorms or even hail with them. However, most of the precipitation is caused by an upper level or mid level disturbance that creates "warm advection" and "positive vorticity advection". Both these processes create upward motion of the air and cause precipitation. Without these upper air disturbances, only "oragraphic lift" by mountains can cause significant precip but that is on the mountain. Otherwise, most precip, if any will be very light. But the lift on the mountain can occasionally cause tstms. Les ************************ Leslie R. Also the road south from Nimmitabel to Bombala is also about to be closed (6pm Tues). The media reported police as saying heavy snow was falling and was showing no signs of easing. It looks like this pool of cold air is moving north along the coast and eastern escarpment - the temp is down to 10 at Moruya with rain falling. The night should be interesting.. perhaps Robertson might get something decent later on. I also expect Braidwood might do well out of this - so I would not be surprised to hear that the road between Bateman's Bay and Braidwood over Clyde Mountain also closes later tonight. In Canberra we are back to 4 so there is the slight chance of a few more flakes before morning - I don't expect that anything significant is likely here. This outbreak has some life in it yet... Soft hail showers along the North Shore but NOT snow. (Ice pellets the size of frozen rain droplets that you couyld crush between forefinger and thumb). Sydney's temp at 3 pm was 12, falling to 7 aty 4 pm - equal lowest afternoon temp in Sydney this century with Sydney's 4 pm temperature on 21 August 1962 when they skiied in Bowral. (Lowest 11 am temp of 5 was recorded on 22 July 1965.) Liverpool was 6 at 3pm (the change had passed there by 3). Extremely low 3pm temps in NSW and Vic. I'd realy like to take a drive out to Stanthorpe late tonight/early tomorrow morning - but as usual the models seem to have weakened the cold pool somewhat, and i'm just not sure if the 5-6 hours travel time there and back is worth it or not.. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "McDonald" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: Victorian Rainfall Figures Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 19:34:57 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey everyone, I think the Viewbank recording would've been due to that big hailstorm in the area last night. There was about 1-2cm deep hail at the Yallambie Rd and Lower Plenty Rd intersection and some moderate flash flooding which is in the vicinity of the Viewbank AWS.....We got about 70mm all up in the 24hrs to 9am and a further 10mm today. There was about 55mm in the guage when I got home this morning from my snow chase at 2am (this includes the BIG hailstorm) and then we got a further 15mm (and 3 other hail showers between 2:30am and 6:30am) to 9am. As Blair has already said there were significant traffic disruptions and rail disruptions too. The main signal controller at Heidelberg Station was struck by lightning last night causing lengthy delays. Flooding at the Rosanna railway crossing forced police to close the boom gates with 3-4 inches of water flowing across the crossing. I think this area may've been one of the hardest hit by this final blast of cold air. After finally getting to the city by train this morning (1hr 35 mins from a normal journey of 35mins) I got off at Melbourne Central and was caught in a deluge with rainfall rates approaching 100mm/h for short bursts with winds easily gusting to 75-80km/h and some small hail too. It was useless having an umbrella as they all turned inside out and the rain was virtually horizontal anyway. I wondered whether their short duration was due to the effect of surface heating being minimised by an advancing sheet of cirrostratus-altostratus to their west. This sheet of high stuff was starting to obscure the sun over the mountains at the time. Perhaps someone knows whether heating is a factor in these formations or is it just the air being lifted as it goes over the mountains? I would suspect the clouds would be more pronounced in sunny weather. Matthew Smith wrote: > > I guess your reffering to the lenticular type clouds? After a bit of discussion today, I think it may be possible for a very localised coloumn of cold air could support snow to fall to low levels even though sorounding tempertures would not make this intuitive - any thoughts from the list? On my way to lunch today and finally got to see a cold-air cb - there was substantial brake in the low-level clouds which yielded a great view of the cb - my first. Sydney's max of 13.1 today (30-5-00) was the 2nd lowest in May for 61 years, behind only 12.9 on 7-5-1984, a very wet day. It was also the coldest day for any month for 4 years. The last 3 days of 14.2, 14.3 and 13.1 represent the first time ever there has been 3 consecutive May days under 14.5. And a question for Blair and his data bank... What about record low maxes... We know of Adelaide (Sat), Canberra (Sun)... but what about places such as Dubbo (9 Sun 9 Mon)when as far as I can find out their May record is 9.9 Also Oberon, 2 consecutive -1 maxes and 48 hrs of continous snow giving 30cm cover and 1 metre drifts? Not bad for that location. And Orange 2 consecutive 1 degree maxes.... any of these records?? don W. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: wbc at ozemail.com.au (Laurier Williams) To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: low maximum temperatures Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 11:55:12 GMT X-Mailer: Forte Agent 1.5/32.452 X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by europe.std.com id HAA10945 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com On Tue, 30 May 2000 10:34:43 +1000, Don White wrote: >And a question for Blair and his data bank... >What about record low maxes... And Blair, according to my database (based only on the Bureau's website climatic data, and therefore shorter term computer records), there was a raft of May minimum temp records went yesterday (29th), mostly in central Qld (Richmond, Clermont, Springsure, Isisford, Longreach), but also Baralaba Qld, Byron Bay and Wollongong Uni in NSW, Giles MO, and Centre Island in the NT. I haven't even looked at today's yet. Looking at the radar now ( 10pm ) and can't help getting rather excited by the band of rain moving up the coast. It's 3C at Bowral, probably just under 2C at Robertson and I think snow will start there within the next hour. I have to work tomorrow, boo, hiss. The amazing thing is the direction of the rain band, it is coming up the coast, can't see any westerly component in it at all, the wind is a different story still W/SW, it went SW for a while this morning before jumping back. STOP PRESS: Just done a visual outside. I have low cloud streaming in from S/SW, roughly parallel to the coast, a spit of rain just started, and wait for it....... a flash of lightning, way, way off to the SE over the ocean. Min at Mt. Crosby was a rather surprising 7.0C, some 8C warmer than Amberley's record low, around 3C warmer than Brisbane AP and also warmer than both coasts!! At 10:00pm tonight, there is again a good breeze and it seems a touch warmer than last night, currently sitting at 11.5C. I once again suspect the accuracy of my thermometer, but while rather cool & breezy, it certainly did not feel anything like 0C early this morning. I think the Brisbane city temp of 8C lends some credibility to the reading, even though we are 26K's inland from there. Nevertheless, I will put 2 thermo's out tonight to verify the read. John. >snip Subject: aus-wx: New Brisbane Low Max Record for May? Hi all, Going through last night's min temperatures, I saw that the Brisbane AP had 4C!!! According to the BoM page, 4.7C is the previous lowest min in May for the Brisbane AP. Any info Blair? :) I recorded 5.6C at my house, which is the lowest temperature I've had in two years. The grass temp at the AP was -1C!!! Amberly recorded -1C as a min temp. Interstingly, the new Brisbane site was 8C - I would have thought it'd have been even cooler than the Brisbane AP site, but apparently not.
